Links Home News Index Vietnam - Church helps rural candidates with college entrance exams (UCAN) Catholic priests, seminarians and college students in northern Vietnam have been arranging safe travel and accommodation for rural candidates taking college entrance examinations.
Marie Nguyen Thi Hien from Nam Dinh province, southeast of Ha Noi, told UCA News she was worried ahead of her entrance exams for a university in Ha Noi, because she had not traveled much and did not know where to stay in Ha Noi. She described the capital, 90 kilometers away, as expensive and intimidating.
The 18-year-old girl, who graduated from high school in early June, said a support campaign run by the local Church helped calm her anxieties.
Father Joseph Pham Van Tu told UCA News he and Father Joseph Nguyen Duc Dung, both parish priests of Bui Chu diocese, which covers most of Nam Dinh, launched the campaign last year. "We have prepared everything for them to take the exams, and we have safe accommodations available for them," Father Tu said ahead of the exams. With such concerns off their mind, he explained, students would be more relaxed and confident, which would help them perform better.
Funded by the two priests, a group of 12 deacons, seminarians and Catholic college students from the province volunteered to help 75 students from rural parishes as they prepared to take their college entrance exams in Ha Noi and in Hai Phong, the port city east of the capital. The volunteers are familiar with local streets, exam venues, accommodations and prices in the two cities.

College Entrance Exams Students in our area take one of four exams to get into college. The following is a brief explanation to help students. The College Board makes both the SAT and the PSAT/NMSQT test. You have taken this test in your sophomore or junior year. The PSAT/NMSQT is used by colleges to award scholarships but not for admission and is divided into three areas: Math, Verbal and Written. These scores range from 200 to 800. The average combined score in Washington last year was 1050. In the nation it was 902. A perfect score on the SAT is 1600. The test is given seven times a year on Saturdays at various high schools and takes 3 hours. You can take the test as many times as you want, but most students take their first test in the spring of their junior year. Most colleges will accept the best combined score of a single testing session. You should consider taking the SAT test if *You are going to start at a four-year college in Washington State.

SATs and ACT scores are the one way colleges are able to evaluate all applicants on an even playing field, so to speak. It is the same test administered to all students at the same time and the scores help colleges compare one student against another (much easier to do than comparing student coursework and grades). The SAT II's help the colleges distinguish a student that much more. Some schools receive close to 20,000 applications, 60% of those applicants having straight-A averages. These scores help distinguish one student from another. About test preparation. There is a good deal of discussion about how to prepare for these types of tests. If you do nothing else, make sure you have read the practice instructions in advance, understand the timing, go over the tips provided, and do the practice questions in the pamphlet provided with the registration material. College Entrance Exams Enter New Era Last Saturday the traffic of the business week faded only to be replaced by a traffic jams of parents in the streets near Beijing No. 8 and No. 35 middle schools and a number of other schools throughout Beijing. The occasion? National college entrance examinations. The exams, which take place July 7-9 every year, are necessary for admission into most of China's top universities and are thus considered by most students and parents as a ticket to good job opportunities in the future. Statistics from the Ministry of Education indicate that more than 4.53 million applicants nationwide are taking part in this year's college entrance examinations. The number is 650,000 more than the 3.88 million who took the test last year. This year's test marks a break from the tradition of the previous two decades. Roughly 16,000 participants over the age of 25 are taking the exams this year, including 10 over 60. The oldest test taker is 73. Previously those above 25 were barred from sitting the national college entrance examinations, but last April the Ministry of Education announced that age and marital status restrictions related to the test would be lifted.

Doshisha to offer college entrance exams in China

Doshisha University in Kyoto Prefecture will hold an entrance examination in China next July to attract gifted Chinese students, university officials said Friday. The move is aimed at building human resources to foster amicable bilateral relations, they said. The private university will also hold entrance examinations in other countries in Asia, including South Korea, they said. It is rare for a Japanese university to conduct entrance exams abroad, according to the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry. The exam will be held at Ocean University of China in Qingdao, Shandong Province, which has an exchange program with Doshisha. They may also be held in Beijing and Shanghai.
