ike countless other college students, Susannah Lloyd-Jones struggled with her choice of major. Finally, in her junior year at Loyola University in Chicago, she picked sociology, a decision that "opened my mind and introduced me to other cultures, " she said. More than two years after graduation, though, Ms. Lloyd-Jones, now a 24-year-old paralegal from Maplewood, N.J., occasionally wonders if she made the right decision. "It might have been easier if I had been a business major," she said, "because that's where the money is."
T imothy Ivy for The New York Times Susannah Lloyd-Jones graduated from Loyola University with a sociology degree, but says that majoring in business might have been a better choice for making money. Ms. Lloyd-Jones says if she had it to do over, she would probably still study sociology but take more business classes and work some internships. She said students feel tremendous pressure over the choice of a major, which could be an important career decision, when many are just beginning to understand themselves.
Many students and caree t r counselors say the pressure to choose the "right" major is more intense than ever because of factors like rising tuition costs and the uncertain economy. Parents and students today often consider college more an investment than a time of academic and personal exp

A major is a concentration of studies in one of three disciplines, Natural Science, Social Science or Humanities, or it may be interdisciplinary and combine courses from two or all three disciplines. The interdisciplinary major is one you create to meet your specific goals of a liberal arts education. Take some time to read the descriptions of major and their required courses in the General Catalog to get a sense of what you will study. The eventual choice of a major should be based on your interests and abilities; choose something that you will enjoy and will succeed in. All majors have prerequisite , or preparatory, courses that give student background knowledge of the Entry Level Writingnd a working vocabulary related to the field. These courses are usually lower division (numbered 1-99), but some majors include upper division (numbered 100-199) courses. The number of prerequisites and how many must be completed before one can officially declare varies from major to major. In addition, some majors require a certain GPA and have other application materials and time frames. Please check with the major department for specific information on how to declare.

"Deciding" students often feel a sense of urgency about selecting and declaring a major, and are sometimes reluctant to admit to other students that they have not yet decided on a major.
Up to 80 percent of entering college students indicate that they are not certain of their choice of major, even if they have initially "decided" on one. In addition, over 50 percent of entering freshmen change their majors at least once before graduation, and some change many times. As you can see, your uncertainty about a major puts you, in fact, in the majority. Making a decision as meaningful as choosing a major is one that should not be hurried, and should be made with the benefit of accurate information and advice. There are no shortcuts in selecting a major thoughtfully.
Moreover, the answer to your quest is not going to come searching for you; instead, you must actively participate in your search by becoming involved in a decision-making process. To be effective in choosing a major, you, like most other deciding students, will need time, information, and commitment. You will need time to consider all of the options, to think about the implications of your decision, and to do the work necessary to make an appropriate decision. You will need information so that your decision is based on up-to-date statistics, data, knowledge, and advice. And after you have taken the time to gather the information and consider the options, you will need commitment, that is, you will need to make the decision.

For those students who wish to major in business, but do not know which major they are interested in, there is an undecided category in which students can select initially. To ensure timely graduation, students are encouraged to select a major before their junior year. However, students may remain undecided until the middle of their junior year; by that time they will have had course work in all the major areas in business and will be in a better position to decide on a major. Both academic and faculty advisors are available to help students with this decision. Students who intend to major in accountancy, international business, management information systems, or operations management should declare their major before their junior year because the major requirements follow a specific sequence. Generally, it is possible to change majors within business during the junior year without delaying graduation, except in the case of the majors previously listed.

What can I do with a major in . . . ?
A description of careers associated with common majors Why you shouldn't worry about what major you choose: Much academic advising is done with a focus on majors: either helping a student to choose one, or helping a student to craft a personalized program once a major has been declared. While this is certainly an important aspect of advising, there is such a thing as stressing it too much. Students today often come into college with great anxiety about which major they should choose. A recent edition of Academic Advising News contained the following statement: Academic Advising News , Vol. 14, No. 4, Sept. 1992, p. 1) This is the kind of information that is important to hear, whether you are a student who is undeclared or who has already declared a major. As faculty advisors, we want to encourage you to stress the total educational experience and not focus too narrowly on the one discipline in which you will be majoring. Specifically, we want to emphasize the importance of the

Picking Your Major
How Important is the Choice of a College Major?
There are so Many and Your Job is to Choose Just One
There's considerable debate as to how important this decision really is. Some say it doesn't matter because the skills you build are universally valued. Others say it does matter because the major you choose can dictate the scope of your opportunities. Which point of view is "right" depends on your time frame.
In the Long Run
as you progress in your career, you build skills and knowledge that transcend your choice of major. after about three years of work experience, your degree begins to fade into the backdrop of your resume, and after about five years, it is relegated to the fine print. at that point, the degree is really a minimum requirement for employment more than a testament to your knowledge. So maybe your choice of major is not so important. In the Near Future Wait a minute! You still need to begin your career somewhere, gaining the work experience that will be valued more highly than your degree. a series of unrelated jobs won't help launch your career nor will a career in a field in which you have no interest. Think of it like a rocket trajectory at launch, you need to be pointed in the right direction; otherwise, it will take considerable energy to change your course later on. the major you choose can help to direct your career.
