6. An Alexandrian Generative Sequence
The architectural work of Christopher Alexander and his colleagues has made Alexander’s notion of structural patterns popular in many fields from architecture to computer programming. (See the influential book A Pattern Language: Towns, Buildings, Construction and the website PatternLanguage.com .) A pattern in Alexander’s sense is rather like an anatomical feature or organ, and when you look at a large number of successful buildings and neighborhoods you can readily identify many anatomical features—“patterns”—that they all share and that contribute to their success. But if you wish to construct a complex many-featured thing from scratch you must not only know the components that need to be present in the final structure, you must also know the correct embryological sequence—the set of assembly rules—for putting the components and sub-components together in the first place. Alexander calls these assembly rules “

" Throughout the year the College provides over 200 courses for students from home and abroad on subjects ranging from Home Economics and Crafts to Literature and Music. Needless to remark, any attempt to encourage the development or improvement of domestic, educational and recreational activities could not materialise without the support and goodwill of the Department of Education, County Louth Vocational Education Committee and many State and Semi-State organisations. The status of the College is further enhanced by the generous sponsorship received from the agricultural, business and commercial sector enabling adult students to avail of scholarships for sponsored courses. Ireland's first residential Adult Education College has attempted to widen the horizons of thousands of visitors and, hopefully, will continue to make a contribution to the nation socially, culturally and educationally. Official Information
... SEARCH Balliol College U NIVERSITY of O XFORD Founded 1263 How To Apply The application process to Balliol is similar to that in all undergraduate colleges of the University. Students are selected by tutors on the basis of their educational record, their academic potential, the information (including the school reference) provided on the UCAS application form, subject tests, and, in most cases, the interviews held in Oxford in early December. Though entrance to Balliol is of course competitive, it is not, it should be stressed, intended to be intimidating. It is a genuinely meritocratic process whereby tutors seek to select the students, regardless of their background, who they believe are best suited for the course for which they are applying. After the interview, tutors seek to make their decisions as rapidly as possible and letters will be sent to all candidates usually before Christmas. All offers to pre-A level candidates are conditional on results at A-level (or equivalent school-leaving examinations). The great majority of offers are currently AAA (or their equivalent). It should be stressed, however, that Balliol only makes roughly the same number of offers in a subject as it has places available. It is therefore the practice of the College to make offers which, on the basis of the candidate's prior record and predicted grades, it expects the student to achieve. In some subjects, Balliol participates in the Open Offer scheme, whereby candidates are offered a place at Oxford with the final allocation to a college decided only when the A-level results are announced in the summer.
