RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS Flu and Colds How can I tell if I have a cold or the flu? Colds and the flu (also called influenza) have many of the same symptoms. A cold is generally mild, while the flu tends to be more severe. A cold often starts with feeling tired, sneezing, coughing, and having a runny nose. You may not have a fever, or you may run a low fever (just one or two degrees higher than usual). You also may have muscle aches, a scratchy or sore throat, watery eyes, and a headache. The flu starts suddenly and hits hard. You'll probably feel weak and tired, and have a fever, dry cough, runny nose, chills, muscle aches, severe headache, eye pain, and a sore throat. It usually takes longer to get over the flu than it takes to get over a cold.

Colds and Flu Colds and flu are caused by viruses. Flu is short for "influenza." True flu is a virus that affects your upper respiratory and lower system – your nose, throat, breathing tube, and lungs. "Stomach flu" is upset stomach and diarrhea caused by a virus in the stomach and intestines. This is not true flu or influenza.
Flu symptoms come on suddenly and affect the body all over. Cold symptoms mostly affect you above the neck. A cold typically goes away in 10-14 days with or without treatment. How Do I Know If I Have the Flu?

ALLER-KAZAAM Tea (or Capsules) Relief from allergy symptoms in a cup of tea (or capsules). About 80 million Americans, more than 20% of the US population, suffer from some form of allergy. And this delicious, completely safe ALLER-KAZAAM Tea can control the worst allergy symptoms! Allergies result from a reaction by the immune system to a foreign protein (antigen) in the blood stream, producing an army of antibodies. The attack by the antibodies releases histamine, which produces the allergic reaction. Normally, the body will begin producing antihistamines that neutralize the histamine and stop the reaction. But all too often, the adrenal glands, which produce the antihistamines, are fatigued and incapable of responding properly.

Colds and Flu Are Colds and Flu the same thing?
  • No , but Colds and Flu do share many similarities.
    • Both are caused by viruses
(colds typically caused by the Rhinovirus, Flu the Influenza Virus).
    • Both are highly contagious, involve the respiratory tract, and have a fairly predictable seasonal pattern.
  • Flu symptoms are often more severe than cold symptoms.
  • The terms cold and flu are often used interchangeably. However, there are important differences particularly in terms of prevention.
How can I protect myself against Cold and Flu?
  • Cold Prevention – colds are so common that it is almost impossible to completely avoid catching one.
    • Tips to reduce your risk:
      • Avoid close contact with people who have a cold, especially during the first 3 days, when they are most contagious.
      • Wash your hand frequently.
      • Keep your fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth.
    • Flu Prevention – the flu vaccine can help prevent or decrease the severity of many flu cases.
      • Because the flu virus undergoes constant change new vaccines are developed every year.
      • The optimal time to receive the flu shot is from early October to mid-November.

The most common illnesses for which people visit their health care provider include colds, bronchitis, and the "flu".
Many people think (or have been told) that they "need antibiotics" for these ailments. Indeed, many physicians have prescribed antibiotics for these ailments. In the past few years, however, physicians worldwide have become increasingly concerned about the problems with prescribing antibiotics when such drugs are not necessary. Problems include:
  • Side effects or serious allergic reactions. The growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Many bacteria can no longer be killed by antibiotics because the germs have developed defense mechanisms against the drugs.
Colds, bronchitis, and common "flu" do not improve more quickly with antibiotics.

No More Colds or Flu BY KRISTYN KUSEK (PHOTO: ILLUSTRATION BY JANELL GENOVESE)
Outsmart those bugs and stay well this winter If there's a cold or flu going around, it will find me. I can get sick just standing across the street from someone who advertisement
sneezes. On a recent trip, my friends considered sending me into their hotel rooms first, as a "sickness buffer." That way, they figured, any nasty viruses would gravitate toward me...and bypass them. When it comes to catching colds and other bugs, there are a lot of people like me. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that Americans suffer from roughly 62 million colds per year. And up to 20 percent of Americans come down with influenza each year during flu season, which runs from October through March. Why do so many of us get sick, especially during the winter? Because the germs that cause infections are easily transmitted. "Eighty percent of all infectious diseases are spread by direct contact, such as kissing or shaking hands with a sick person, or by indirect contact, like touching a doorknob or handling a phone that a sick person has used," explains Philip Tierno, Ph.D., director of clinical microbiology and immunology at New York University Medical Center, in New York City. Many viruses, including the flu, lurk in the air, waiting to be inhaled by an unsuspecting human host. But you're not completely helpless: Here are some simple precautions you can take to lower your risk for colds, flu, and other viruses.

how it works

Documented evidence reveals 80% of all colds, sickness and disease enter the body through the nasal passages. A form of bacteria, known as rhinovirus, is considered one of the primary cause of colds and flu. Healthy sinuses can effectively eliminate harmful elements from entering the body.
It is called the “common cold” for good reason. There are over one billion colds in the United States each year. It’s the most common reason that children miss school and parents miss work. Once you have "caught" a cold, the symptoms usually begin in 2 or 3 days. Typically, an irritated nose or scratchy throat is the first sign, followed within hours by sneezing, watery nose, sore throat, cough, headache or other symptoms. Over 200 types of viruses can cause a cold. When someone has a cold, their runny nose is teeming with cold viruses. Sneezing, nose-blowing, and nose-wiping spread the virus. You can catch a cold by inhaling the virus if you are sitting close to someone who sneezes, or by touching your nose, eyes, or mouth after you have touched something contaminated by the virus. The entire cold is usually over in about 7 days, with perhaps a few lingering symptoms (such as cough) for another week. If it lasts longer, consider another problem, such as a sinus infection or allergies.

Study Says Echinacea Doesn't Help Colds NewsMax.com Wires
Thursday, July 28, 2005
New research finds that taking the popular herbal remedy echinacea does nothing to treat or prevent colds.
The federally funded study was what fans and foes of such substances say they have long needed - rigorous, scientific testing. It found that patients who took an echinacea plant extract fared no better than those who took a dummy treatment. Story Continues Below "Our study ... adds to the accumulating evidence that suggests that the burden of proof should lie with those who advocate this treatment," wrote Dr. Ronald Turner of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, who led the study, which appeared in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. Echinacea, or purple coneflower, is sold over-the-counter in pills, drops and lozenges. With reported annual sales of more than $300 million, echinacea is one of the most popular medicinal herbs used by people to treat colds. Several animal studies and small human trials have pointed to the possible benefit of the herb in preventing respiratory infections. However, one of largest studies - involving 407 children in 2003 - found that echinacea failed to alleviate cold symptoms and even caused mild skin rashes in some cases.

Colds and Flu
BUY COLD AND FLU SYMPTOM RELIEF NOW Colds and flu are caused by infection with a virus and commonly affect the health of our respiratory tract including our nose, throat and chest. Cold and flu viruses are always changing so this year's cold and flu virus will probably be different to last year's viruses. This is why you can get a new cold or flu up to a few times each year. Its also why a cure is so hard to research and develop, although in recent years, vaccines for flu are available from your doctor. Cold and flu viruses are spread by touch or through the air when we talk, sneeze, cough or breathe. Antibiotics don't kill viruses so rather than going to your doctor to ask for them, its best to let your body's own immune system defend you and just control and treat the symptoms. Many cold and flu treatments are available.
Cold and Flu Medicines
Many health products which treat cold and flu symptoms have more than one medicine to treat the range of symptoms that occur.
