The Soviet Intelligence Alert and Operation RYAN
...
Summary
Soviet intelligence services went on alert in 1981 to watch for US preparations for launching a surprise nuclear attack against the USSR and its allies. This alert was accompanied by a new Soviet intelligence collection program, known by the acronym RYAN, to monitor indications and provide early warning of US intentions. Two years later a major war scare erupted in the USSR. This study traces the origins and scope of Operation RYAN and its relationship to the war scare. Some observers dismissed the alert and the war scare as Soviet disinformation and scare tactics, while others viewed them as reflecting genuine fears. The latter view seems to have been closer to the truth. The KGB in the early 1980s saw the international situationin Soviet terminology, the "correlation of world forces"as turning against the USSR and increasing its vulnerability. These developments, along with the new US administration's tough stance toward the USSR, prompted Soviet officials and much of the populace to voice concern over the prospect of a US nuclear attack. New information suggests that Moscow also was reacting to US-led naval and air operations, including psychological warfare missions conducted close to the Soviet Union. These operations employed sophisticated concealment and deception measures to thwart Soviet early warning systems and to offset the Soviets' abilitygreatly bolstered by US spy John Walkerto read US naval communications.

Scope The Journal of Cold War Studies features peer-reviewed articles based on archival research in the former Communist world and in Western countries. Some articles offer reevaluations of important historical events or themes, emphasizing the changes of interpretation necessitated by declassified documents and new firsthand accounts. Other articles seek to bring new evidence to bear on current theoretical debates. Many existing theories of international and domestic politics have relied on generalizations from the Cold War period, but until very recently the evidence for these generalizations was tenuous at best. Articles in the Journal of Cold War Studies use declassified materials and new memoirs from the former Eastern bloc and Western countries to illuminate and raise questions about numerous theoretical concerns, including theories of decision-making, deterrence, bureaucratic politics, institutional formation, bargaining, diplomacy, foreign policy conduct, and international relations. Drawing on the latest evidence, articles in the

cold war Project, designed to facilitate continued study of the cold war era.
http://www.videofact.com/coldwar.htm
Cold War project Our goal is to advance and facilitate the study of the history of the Cold War era by supporting original historical research; by fostering innovative inquiry; by creating opportunities for engagement among members of the national and international scholarly community studying the history of the Cold War. The Cold War began at the close of the WW II and ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Cold War was more than an arm race. It was the military, economic and ideological confrontation that brought us, more than once, to the brink of nuclear war. It touched many aspects of life. The United States and the Sovi et Union were major protagonists, but almost every nation in the world was affected in some way, as were all who lived through those years. Our site is designed to facilitate continued study of the Cold War era. In our attempt to provide a full range of information we encourage educationally enhancing information from visitors. This project needs your support.

We Escaped
We Survived
It is Time to Remember For thirty years civilization hung by its finger- nails. In the abyss below - tens of thousands of mad missiles waited - poised to roar up at the whim of a hair trigger. For three decades, every day, every hour, catastrophe flicked its tongue at humankind. One slip and the blackened flesh of a hundred million men, women, children would peel off white bone; and nuclear winter lay in wait to devour billions more.
By the greatest good luck, and the slimmest of margins that danger passed. The world, on the brink of the volcano, did not trip. The most ferocious horror ever to open its jaws to the human species, retreated innocuously. We walked in the valley of death and lived.
How do we now mark that deliverance?
With indifference. Soon nothing will be left of those desperate decades but polemics on bookshelves.
We came face to face with evil and escaped. We have the responsibility of survivors. Woe to the world if the future forgets!

Most people have heard of Britain's involvement in military conflicts in the later half of this century, such as the Falklands War and the Gulf War. What the younger generation does not realize is that soldiers, sailors, and airmen from Britain and the Commonwealth have been fighting small wars to defend Britain's shrinking empire since the end of World War Two. From the insect ridden jungles of Malaya to the frozen hills of Korea, in the back streets of Aden and Cyprus, from the African bush of Kenya to the rain soaked hills of the Falkland Islands, young National Servicemen and regular British soldiers have been defending the British empire and her allies for the last 58 years. This is their story. This site was started in January 1999 and the Webmasters are constantly updating various chapters. If the campaign you served in is not listed within this web site, please e-mail us and tell us about it. Please note that NEGATIVE e-mails will be ignored. It is not our intention to ignore any military conflict since 1945, it just takes time to gather all the information and publish it. Please look to our SITREP section to see what we're going to publish soon

ODE TO JOY AND FREEDOM
The Fall of the Berlin Wall
by
Ursula Grosser Dixon
Ursula's History Web

From July 17 until August 2, 1945, a conference was held by the victorious powers who had defeated Germany. Truman, Churchill and Stalin met at Cecilienhof castle in Potsdam near Berlin. The Potsdam agreement, to a far greater extent than that of Yalta, determined the shape of post war Europe. Among other important decisions, they reached an agreement on how to divide the defeated country between them: Not only was Germany parted in four zones ( French as well ), but the capital of the Third Reich was divided into four sectors, with the Russians getting almost half of the city, which became East Berlin, while the Western Allies shared the other half into three sectors, which became West Berlin. During the following years Bonn became the capital of West Germany, and on Oct.6, 1949 the Russian occupied zone became the country of East Germany, a country with a truly grand new name, calling themselves The German Democratic Republic, with East Berlin its capital. We could travel freely from West to East, which we often did, as almost everyone had families in the Eastern part of Germany and East Berlin. Technically West Berlin belonged to West Germany, although geographically it was located in the center of East Germany. Anyone wanting to travel from West Berlin to West Germany by road or rail, had to pass through East German check points. In the early post war years these check points were under the control of Russian military personnel.
