Coin collecting is the hobby of collecting coins While hoarding coins due to their value goes back to the beginning of coinage, collecting them as art pieces was a later development. Known as the "Hobby of Kings", modern coin collecting is generally believed to have begun in the fourteenth century with Petrarch . Notes of Roman emperors having coin collections are also known, but it remains somewhat unclear whether these coins were studied, considered curiosities or were merely hoarded. There are almost as many different ways of collecting coins as there are collectors. Many collectors specialize in some area of collecting, at least for a time. The most common type of coin collector is the casual collector. When the casual collector comes across something out of the ordinary, such as a denomination that doesn't circulate often, or an obsolete type, perhaps an error coin or a modified coin such as a two headed magician's piece he will toss it in a drawer. Casual collectors can get more involved when the chance of finding something interesting in circulation increases. For example, the recent

Frequently asked questions about Collecting
Canadian Coins
How do I start collecting? The best thing to do is just start picking up different things: coins, medals, tokens or notes that attract your attention. Also pick up a couple of standard reference catalogues such as The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins or Haxby's Coins of Canada. They will prove invaluable in the future. Eventually you will need a plan to organize your collection. Let this follow your interests and other hobbies. Most collectors decide to specialize in issues of a particular country or time period, or even a theme, such as trains. What you chose is up to you, there are no rules. The Canadian Numismatic Association also runs a correspondence course. What coins should I buy?

Brad's Introduction to Ancient Coins
Introduction Brief History Roman Coins Buying and Storage Fakes and Authentification ... Grading Coin of the Month Important update... There are efforts in Congress to pass laws that would effectively make collecting ancient coins illegal under the guise of preventing the sale of looted antiquities. These laws are overly broad and should be defeated. Please support The Ancient Coin Collectors Guild in their effort to inform people about these bills and to defeat them. This is my first try at an introduction to ancient coins. There are many other wonderful web sites about ancient coins, such as Doug Smith's or Augustus' , and I do recommend that you visit these if this site piques your interest. But I wanted to make my own page to explain why ancient coins interest me, and show off a few of my favorites. While I am not a dealer, I still do have a few ancient coins for sale (really!) Let me start by describing the first coin you see here. At left is the "obverse" or front of the coin. It depicts the head of Venus, the Roman goddess of beauty and love. At right is the "reverse" or back of the coin. It shows Victory riding a triga, or three-horse chariot. This coin has a chunk of metal missing where the horse's front legs are, but is otherwise is a very nice state of preservation. Below the chariot is an inscription reading C NAE BALB (shown at right, enlarged and digitally enhanced, though still more difficult to read than it is on the coin itself). This gives the name of the person who held the post of "moneyer" when this coin was minted. From historical information, we can find out that this was C. Naevius Balbus who held the office in Republican Rome in 79 BC. So we know when this coin was minted to the year, even though it is over two-thousand years old!

Coin collecting: how to get started
This article discusses the basics of coin collecting, and describes how one can ease into the hobby quickly and cheaply.
While to some it may seem odd to spend new money to buy old money that you never intend to use, numismatics the collection and study of money, particularly coins is rapidly becoming one of the world’s most popular hobbies. There was a time when only wealthy people, such as aristocrats, could afford to indulge in the hobby of coin collecting, thus earning the pastime the sobriquet of “the Hobby of Kings.” Things are different today; so many people collect coins now that some observers have come to call it “the King of Hobbies.” Nowhere is this more true than in the United States, where interest has skyrocketed in recent years due to the release of new varieties of quarter-dollars. Part of numismatics’ charm is its accessibility. It’s easy to get started: most people start by culling interesting coins from their spare change. Once past this “accumulator” stage, coin collecting may get a bit more costly, but it can still be an inexpensive and rewarding hobby. Most coins younger than two hundred years old were minted in the millions or billions, and it’s often relatively easy (with, perhaps, a few exceptions) to collect every coin in a series. For example, a set of Lincoln cents with the Lincoln Memorial on the reverse wouldn’t cost much money to accrue, although it might take a little a good bit of time and that’s where the fun comes in. Of course, as with most hobbies, how much you spend (both financially and temporally) is up to you.

... What are coin grades? (100%, 1 rating) submitted by Brad James A , 95%, 52 ratings), Apr 16, 04 Coin grades are the levels of "wear" a coin has that enables collectors to determine value. A coin with less wear has more value. Many books exist on this topic, so I will summarize here. The general grades and their abbreviation are: FDC "Fleur-de-Coin": Flawless, no sign of wear.

Coin collecting has held man in its thrall for centuries and many of the famous collections in history are known to have given their owners great pleasure. For instance the Sun King, Louis XIV, enjoyed the French Royal Collection so much that he visited it every day, remarking that he could 'always find something new to learn'. Coins are collectable for several reasons - their intrinsic value, as momentous of special occasions or simply as beautiful works of art. Undoubtedly many a collector when handling a favorite coin takes delight in speculating on the social, economical or political events that may have given rise to its issue or design. Some chronicle periods of romance, some chronicle periods of war. Oftentimes coins have been used as a medium of national pride. For example, when we look at the sovereigns of the Tudor monarchs we see the major coin of a new dynasty. Thus coins can talk when you learn their language. By the nineteenth century great strides were being made in the field of numismatic research. To satisfy the ever growing demand, specialist books and periodicals were being published.
