coin collecting My interest in collecting coins began when I noticed a 'P' on a Roosevelt Dime. I thought it might be an error so I asked a friend of mine if they knew what it was. He explained that it was a mint mark and asked if I was interested in collecting coins. I said I was, so he gave me some 2x2 Mylars and an old Redbook and I was on my way. I rode my bike about 7 miles on Saturdays to add coins to my collection. There was also a small coin shop right by my house that I would visit, sometimes just to chat about coins with the dealer. I subscribed to a few coin magazines and found out about the ANA and became a junior member. They welcomed me even though I had very little experience collecting or doing shows. They awarded me a scholarship to go to Colorado Springs (where the ANA is based) to go to the Annual Summer Conference. After meeting the "celebrities" of coin collecting, I was hooked. When living in Spain I didn't do much until the last 6 months when I began putting together a collection of Spanish coins. Unfortunately, some were stolen from the package I sent to my home in the US. I haven't gone back to collecting as much as I did when I was younger, but I started a

Acronyms used in Coin Collecting
This list is intended to cover the acronyms which are commonly used in the internet newsgroup rec.collecting.coins . For completeness, it includes mintmarks, internet phrases, and a few abbreviations (like UNC). I have been informed that true acronyms are pronouncable, such as MASH, WAC, RADAR, etc., so perhaps the items below are more accurately described as "initials". All references are to United States coins, unless otherwise noted. For more detailed information on the terms used here, see the Numismatic Information Directory at Chuck D'Ambra Coins.
ABPN
alt.binary.pictures.numismatic . An internet newsgroup where (large) coin pictures can be posted.
ACG
ACcu-Grade. Grading service. Controversial at present, because the assigned grades seem to be inflated relative to standard services like PCGS and NGC.
aF

AFAIK
As Far As I Know. Internet phrase.
AG

ANA
American Numismatic Association. Collector and dealer organization.
ANACS
(originally) American Numismatic Association Certification Service. Grading service. It has since been sold to a company independent of the ANA.

65. Randy's Numismatic Page
General information about coin collecting.
http://members.aol.com/rbi82/randy/coins.html
Welcome to Randy's Numismatic Page
I have been collecting coins and currency since I was five. I specialize in Mercury Dimes Civil War Numismatica , and Minting Varieties
Mercury Dimes
Mercury Dimes were designed by Adolph Weinman. They were minted from 1916 to 1945. The obverse (heads) of the dime depicts Liberty with a winged cap, not Mercury the Greek god. The reverse (tails) depicts a Roman fasces or executioners axe with an olive branch. The dimes were minted at the Philadelphia (P), San Francisco (S), and Denver (D) mints. Key coins are the 1916 D, 1921 P, 1921 D, 1926 S, 1930 D, 1930 S, 1931 D, and the 1931 S. The overdates 1942/1 and the 1942/1 D are also very scarce. The 1916 D has the lowest mintage (264,000) and the 1942 P has the highest mintage (205,432,329).
I own the 1921 P, 1921 D, 1926 S, 1930 D, 1930 S, 1931 D, and the1931 S. Currently, I need 51 coins to complete my collection. Back to the Top
Civil War Numismatica
I collect Civil War Tokens, Fractional Currency, and Confederate Currency. Civil War Tokens were privately created to alleviate the shortage of coins. The shortage occurred because people were hoarding copper, silver and gold. Designs advertised shops or contained patriotic slogans. Fractional Currency was the government's solution to the hoarding of coins. It is paper money in denominations of $0.05, $0.10, $0.25, and $0.50. The currency was issued from 1863 to c.1875. I have a set of all denominations issued in 1863. When the southern states seceded from the U.S., they needed currency. Issued from 1861 to 1864, Confederate currency has a variety of designs and denomination. I am currently trying to complete a set of 1864 notes.

Tom Lenks collects even the rarest of coins; this ancient Byzantine coin was found in a monastery in Rome!
Tom Lenks started as a hobbyist but is now a professional coin collector and appraiser. Lenks shares some expert advice for starting a coin collection:
    • A coin's value is sometimes determined by an error that occurred during minting. When looking for coins, collectors should examine them carefully for anomalies in a coin's appearance.
    • In the past, proof sets were created with a copy of each coin minted for the year. Proof sets are virtually untouched mint employees wore gloves when handling them and pristine condition makes coins more valuable.
    • Collectors should start a collection by looking for something they find interesting for example, a certain design, denomination or president and then collect that.

Coin Collecting Database Software For The Serious Coin Collector
Coin collecting has been a popular hobby in America and around the world for many years. Famous coin collections in history are known to have given their owners great pleasure. For instance the Sun King, Louis XIV, enjoyed the French Royal Coin Collection so much that he visited it every day, remarking that he could 'always find something new to learn'. Numismatist's Notebook coin collecting software from Sandy Knoll Software helps catalog your collection into a database.
Coins are collectable for several reasons - their intrinsic value, as momentous of special occasions or simply as beautiful artwork. Undoubtedly many collectors when handling a favorite coin take delight in speculating on the social, economical or political events that may have given rise to the coin's issue or design. Some coins chronicle periods of romance, some coins chronicle periods of war. Sometimes coins have been used as a medium of national pride. For example, when we look at the sovereigns of the Tudor monarchs we see the major coin of a new dynasty - Thus coin collector's coins can talk when you learn their language. Check out this Coin Collector Software
By the nineteenth century great strides were being made in the field of numismatic (coin collecting) research. To satisfy the ever growing demand, specialist books and periodicals were being published, and now there is even Numismatist's Notebook coin collecting software from Sandy Knoll Software.
