    50. A Companion To Rare Coin Collecting
Free Introduction to Collecting Rare Coins by Ray Wyman.

    A Companion to
    Rare Coin Collecting
    By Ray Wyman, Jr.
Interested in rare coins? Do you want to start a rare coin collection? I wrote A Companion to Rare Coin Collecting for a group of investment advisors who needed a booklet that introduced basic concepts of the art of rare coin collecting. For that reason, this text offers equal time to the pros and cons of rare coin collecting. It provides good insights on how to avoid common mistakes and provides simple layman explanations. In the chapter "Are Rare Coins for You?" readers will find out if they fit the profile for this form of investing. "What is a Rare Coin?" helps define the topic of true rarity while the succeeding chapters - "Grading Services", "The Market", "How to Buy Rare Coins", "Holding Coins", and "Selling Coins" - help define the form and structure of the investment. As to the question, "why is this book offered free?" Simply put, there are too many other better books about rare coin collecting that were written by well-known numismatists (see the 'Suggested Reading' list below). Nevertheless, since its public release to the Web in 1997, this text has been read by more than a quarter of a million readers hailing from Australia, Europe, and the U.S. Numerous webmasters and editors from all sorts of hobby sites, including prominent search engines such as Ask Jeeves, InfoSeek, Lycos, and AOL, have selected this book for their particular venues dealing with coins and hobbies. As a result, Companion is widely read by thousands of new collectors each week. I wish all of you the very best of luck - but most of all have fun.

      History
While hoarding coins due to their value goes back to the beginning of coinage, collecting them as art pieces was a later development. Known as the "Hobby of Kings", modern coin collecting is generally believed to have begun in the fourteenth century with Petrarch . Notes of Roman emperors having coin collections are also known, but it remains somewhat unclear whether these coins were studied, considered curiosities or were merely hoarded. edit
      Coin collecting specialties
There are almost as many different ways of collecting coins as there are collectors. Many collectors specialize in some area of collecting, at least for a time. edit
      Casual collector
The most common type of coin collector is the casual collector. When the casual collector comes across something out of the ordinary, such as a denomination that doesn't circulate often, or an obsolete type, perhaps error coins or a modified coin such as a two headed magician's piece he will toss it in a drawer. Casual collectors can get more involved when the chance of finding something interesting in circulation increases. For example, the recent

    Introduction
Coin collecting is both a popular hobby and an investment. Coins are usually not a short term investment, as some experts recommend a holding period of three to five years, and preferably five to ten. The supply of coins is fixed, since only a given number of coins are minted per year, adding to the potential value of coins. Unlike securities markets, the market for coins is unregulated. Consequently, discerning decision-making is critical to avoid purchasing overvalued coins and, in some cases, counterfeit coins. Return to Top
    Risk and Return
Like any market, the coin market fluctuates due to supply and demand conditions. In addition, inflationary expectations fuel the coin market. Despite the implication of a high return in many ads for coins, there is a great deal of risk in coin investments. Consequently, the decision to invest in coins should be accompanied by recognition of the risk involved and a decision to investigate thoroughly prior to purchasing. Coin dealers may offer a buy-back policy, for a limited time and not necessarily at 100% of the purchase price of the coin. A buy-back policy or return policy permits the purchaser to get a second opinion. However, the investors should not be led to believe that these firms are affiliated with the US Government.
