Introduction
This FAQ addresses a few of the most commonly asked questions about coin collecting. It is intended only as an introduction to the hobby. Years of research and even entire careers have been devoted to in depth study of specialized topics, and many detailed reference works have been published (a few are listed in Part 2). While some of the material is applicable to other numismatic collectibles, the emphasis here is on coins. In some cases, more complete information is provided for U.S. coins. Inclusion of a product, dealer or company in this FAQ does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation.

Thursday - September 15, 2005 Helping the Hurricane Katrina victims I just got an e-mail from Brian of KatrinaQuarters.com asking me to spread the word about their effort. It seems like a worthwhile cause. Here's a brief synopsis of their purpose. In 2002, as part of the 50 States Quarter program introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1999, approximately 1,343,804,000 (764,204,000 Louisiana and 579,600,000 Mississippi) quarters representing the states of Louisiana and Mississippi were placed into circulation. Most of us probably don't even realize we have them in our pockets, cars, change buckets etc., but now is the time to look for them. From these quarters alone, there exists over $335,000,000 in potential aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Our hope is to collect over $1,000,000 in Louisiana and Mississippi quarters in time for Thanksgiving Day 2005. We are asking you to contribute to this ambitious effort and help us to exceed our expectations and, in so doing, bring a brighter day to the vicitims of this very dark event. Coin Collecting for Beginners
I've been collecting coins sporadically since I was a little kid. Once I started surfing the web, I expected to find tons of helpful sites. There are many excellent sites out there (see the links page), but I was surprised that relatively few of them cater to beginners. This site will offer advice for newbies on how to get started, how to pursue this hobby even on a low budget, and some suggestions for those who already have some experience in the hobby but want to renew or expand their interest.

Greto Garbo Stamp to be Issued
On September 23, five days after the 100th anniversary of her birth, the U.S. Postal Service will unveil a Garbo stamp at the Scandinavia House here in New York; it'll be a joint issue with the Swedish Post, which will hold its own event that day in Stockholm. (The stamp, for the record, is based on a photograph of Garbo at age 27, taken in 1932 by MGM's Clarence Bull during the filming of "As You Desire Me".
