THE ORDER PSITTACIFORMES is a distinctive group of birds comprising approximately 350 species (Forshaw 1989). Several unique characteristics of the parrots suggest that they compose a monophyletic group, including a distinctive bill and a unique feather pigment (Smith 1975, Dixon 1994). Many classifications of the Psittaciformes have emerged since the classification by Linnaeus in 1758 (Sibley and Ahlquist 1990). Despite this long history, much uncertainty remains about how different groups of parrots are related to one another. Continue article Advertisement
The cockatoos, family Cacatuidae, have long been recognized as a unique group within the Psittaciformes (Adams et al. 1984). Morphologically, cockatoos are distinguished from other parrots by having an erectile crest and lacking dyck texture in their feathers, which produces blue and green in the plumage of other parrots. Cockatoos possess a gall bladder, a non-pericyclic iris, paired patches of powder down in the lumbar region, and several other derived characters that separate them from other parrots (Adams et al. 1984). The monophyly of the cockatoos is also supported by karyological (Van Donzen and DeBoer 1984), allozyme (Adams et al. 1984), and DNA sequence data (Madsen et al. 1992).

Breeder of Blue and Gold Macaws, Quaker parrots, Cockatiels, Parakeets. Being an avid animal lover all my life, brought me to the bird world. The large parrots as well as the smaller species are remarkable pets and family members. They are excellent companions, and a constant source of entertainment. Parrots are sometimes misunderstood. Some people believe that they are unaffectionate and not cuddle worthy. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Parrots make great pets and companions for a number of reasons. Parrots that have been accustomed to change are very adaptive to new environments and readily accept changes in schedule. Birds are very cuddly animals. They love to be petted and stroked, and need attention, affection, and discipline. Without discipline, you could end up with a very spoiled, demanding bird. When you look into those eyes, you can see the intelligence and playfulness waiting to be brought out, not to mention the love, devotion, and loyalty.

Of Cockatoos, Caves, Trappers and Trust
Island of Seram, Moluccas Archipelago, Eastern Indonesia
By Bonnie Zimmermann
It's mid to late afternoon, deep in the rainforests of Seram. It's hard to tell the time as the canopy above is so dense that it lets in little light, and what sky I can see is cloudy and grey. Using some large leaves as a simple mat, hoping to avoid too many insect bites, I sit and wait. I am surrounded by a sea of green and millions of insects. The insects are unseen, but produce a background whine that never ceases. The Seramese call it "the sound of silence," and it's hard to ignore. It is a surreal moment. To my left, my partner Ceisar (from Yayasan Wallacea) and friends Dores, Ois and Dace are sitting on the forest floor, smoking cigarettes, drinking tea from a thermos, and playing cards using my camera case as an impromptu table. We are waiting for the cockatoos. I am honored to be the first member of the Project Bird Watch Team to visit Api Lima (Five Fires) located within the Manusela National Park. The site is about a 60 minute hike from PBW's jungle camp, and provides some incredible viewing of the Moluccan cockatoo. The island of Seram is the only place in the world where these birds live. The hike to the site is fairly strenuous and our pace is "jalan cepat" - a fast walk. This forest seems older than the one near out canopy platform. As we ascend the mountain side it is forest primeval with trees so gigantic that it would take eight men with outstretched arms to span the base, and you can hear near by sounds of hidden streams and waterfalls.

Painted tail trial comes to an end
Two separate sightings of Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo chicks with painted tails were made in Perth in April 2004. These records indicate the chicks travelled about 160 km from their nesting hollows in the months after fledging. This trial was conducted to test the tail-painting method as a means of tracking Carnaby's Black-Cockatoos, and to gather information about where cockatoos from particular breeding populations travel to after they leave their nesting sites. Between November and December 2003, 29 Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo chicks from four different breeding sites in the northern wheatbelt had the white panels on their tail feathers painted. The paint was a lanolin-based spray paint and the colours used were blue, green, orange and red. From December 2003 to June 2004 a publicity campaign was carried out to encourage members of the public to report any sightings of painted tails and searches were conducted by Birds Australia WA volunteers and other individuals. Eight potential sightings have been recorded to date, of which one has been confirmed and two others are highly feasible. The confirmed sighting occurred in Moora shortly after the chick fledged and was made only a short distance (900 m) from the nesting hollow. This chick later died. A sighting some days earlier in Moora could possibly have been the same chick or another.
