Critically Endangered Eyre Peninsula Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos

(Photo: J van Weenen)
Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos Calyptorhynchus funereus are found throughout south eastern Australia in SW Queensland, eastern NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, Bass Strait islands and southern South Australia. Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos are not listed as nationally threatened, however in South Australia, Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos are considered Vulnerable under the National Parks and Wildlife South Australia NPWSA ) Wildlife Schedules 2000. The Eyre Peninsula Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo population is isolated from other mainland and island populations (including Kangaroo Island) and has undergone dramatic decline since European settlement. Consequently, the Eyre Peninsula Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo population is now recognised as critically endangered. In 1998 only between 19 and 21 birds remained on the Eyre Peninsula. Current census data for 2004 has the wild population between 30-40 individuals. At this size, the population requires broad based assistance to prevent it from becoming extinct in the near future.

Feathered Pals
Our birds are all housed in an indoor aviary with controlled temperature and equal amounts of daylight as well as moonlight. Soft music or "Sounds of the 80's" is played for them during the waking hours. All our feathered pals are fed a pellet diet with fresh fruit and/or veggies 3 times a week. Virtually no seed enters our birds diet due to the high fat content and the lack of protein and vitamins found in this type of diet. An overweight, malnutritioned bird, is not a happy bird.
We consider ourselves lucky to be able to work with these guys and offer to you, the best pet and new addition to your family possible.

A cockatoo is any of about 20 species of bird belonging to the family Cacatuidae . Along with the Psittacidae family ("true" parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes (all parrots ). The name cockatoo originated from the Malay language 'kakaktua' meaning 'older sister' ('kakak' - sister and 'tua' - old). Cockatoos share many features with other parrots including the characteristic curved beak shape and a zygodactyl foot (two toes forward and two toes back). They differ however in a number of anatomical characteristics, including the often spectacular movable headcrest, and their lack of the Dyck texture feather composition which gives many parrots their iridescent colours. Cockatoo species are on average larger than other parrot species. The

Cacatua galerita
Description
The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is a large white parrot, measuring 45cm - 50cm. It has a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). This is a noisy and conspicuous cockatoo, both at rest and in flight. The most common call is a distinctive loud screech, ending with a slight upward inflection. Young Sulphur-crested Cockatoos resemble the adults. The Sulphur-crested Cockatoo is similar in appearance to the three species of corella found in Australia. Corellas are smaller, however, and lack the prominent yellow crest. Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, along with many other parrots, are susceptible to a widespread viral disease known as Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD), which causes the birds to lose their feathers and grow grotesquely shaped beaks.

Description
The Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo is a large (55 - 65 cm) cockatoo. It is easily identified by its mostly black plumage, with most body feathers edged with yellow, not visible at a distance. It has a yellow cheek patch and yellow panels on the tail. The female has a larger yellow cheek patch, pale brown bill (grey-black in males) and black marks in the yellow tail panels. Young birds resemble the adult female, but young males have a smaller cheek patch. Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos also have a distinctive call. The contact call is a drawn-out "kee-ow". Some screeches are also given. Until recently, the Short-billed Black-Cockatoo, C. latirostris , found in south-western Australia, was considered a subspecies of the Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo. This species has white, instead of yellow, panels in the tail. Another similarly sized black-coloured cockatoo is the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo, C. magnificus
