SULPHUR-CRESTED COCKATOOS by Steven Armstrong I had been looking for a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo hen for quite a while to put with my 4-year-old cock bird. He is a lovely big bird, in perfect feather and quite a character in the rain. In April, I heard of a lady in Brisbane wanting to sell a hen that had been working the nest in previous years but had not laid yet. I went down and had a look at the cockatoo and decided to bring her home. I put her in one of those Ansett dog crates lined with news-paper and we headed for home. We wouldn't have been travelling more than twenty-five minutes when she decided it would be a good idea to eat the newspaper. It was hilarious to hear her shredding the newspaper on the back seat. She made such a mess, but I suppose it helped with the stress of travelling. I put her in quarantine for a couple of weeks and on one sunny Sunday morning I put her in with the cock bird. She was rather timid and took a few days to find her feet and settle down but what was most amazing was that within ten minutes of putting her in, the cock bird was attempting to mount her and after a few failures, he was mating her! Brian Littleproud's response As part of an unusual approach to controlling native birds and the damage they cause, farmers in the Lakeland district have been given permits to shoot a certain number of Red-tailed Black Cockatoos by the Department of Environment and Heritage. The Red-tailed Blacks are a fairly common sight in Lakeland and farmers report that they, along with the Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , cause a great deal of damage to crops of peanuts and corn in particular. Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo, Calyptorhynchus banskii The birds, which are classified as common wildlife, are protected under the Conservation Act, but a select number of farmers have been given a permit to shoot up to 30 scout birds. As might be guessed from the title, the scout birds range ahead of the flock and report back on where the good food and water supplies are. Work in the Northern Territory has shown that if scout birds are eliminated the flock will not move into the area they were eliminated from. The Department of Environment and Heritage have attempted to develop a creative and flexible pilot programme to address the problem of bird damage in the Lakeland area.

Rose-breasted Cockatoo - Breeding the Beautiful Galah By Dale R. Thompson In Australia, the Rose-breasted Cockatoo is known as the "Galah." It is found in the wild in the multi-thousands. For bird watchers and visitors to Australia, the Galah is truly a fantastic sight to see. They are most often observed in groups, both small and large. When seen in the hundreds, whether in trees or flying in the air, it becomes a memorable experience. For the Australian aviculturist, the Galah is not a prized bird. Because of their great numbers in the wild where they are often considered an agricultural pest by some of the grain producing farmers, this cockatoo is worth almost nothing in captivity. If kept at all, it is usually as a pet. The value of th e Galah or Rose-breasted Cockatoo is well illustrated by the personal experience I observed while I was visiting a Sydney pet store. A 12-year-old boy came into the shop with a tame Galah that was kept in a 12-X 14-X 18-inch cage. He wanted to sell to the manager of the pet store but was turned down. After some discussion, the boy traded his tame Galah for one gray Cockatiel and one female Red-rumped Parakeet. Although this was an astonishing transaction to me, the boy seemed delighted with the trade. When discussing the situation with the boy (who at first seemed reluctant to talk), he related that he had removed the Galah (he referred to it a "cocky") from a nest in a nest in the wild, hand raised it and then had become tired of it.
