About Cockatoos Family: Cacatuidae Subfamily: Cacatuinae Genus(5): Cacatua, Probosciger, Calyptorhynchus, Callocephalon, Eolophus
Cockatoos are extremely affectionate, their feathers are very soft, and they are gorgeous!....on top of that, they are real intelligent and very inquisitive birds!
Cockatoos love to show off and make comical displays with outspread wings, head bobbing, dancing and loud calls. They are very active and curious about their environment. Happy cockatoos spend most of their waking time performing, or examining and manipulating their toys and other cage objects. A single cockatoo will thrive as a your pet if you devote time and attention to it, playing with it and sharing affections on a regular daily basis. However, two pet cockatoos are ideal if you are not able to devote so much time and attention as the bird will demand. Two will help to prevent bad habits from developing by a bored bird, such as screeching and feather plucking.

Cockatoos are extremely loving and social parrots. Intelligent, playful, and enchantingly comical, they seem to know what beautiful creatures they are! They will display their wings, toss their heads and raise their erectile crests in a proud impressive display!
Cockatoos are undoubtedly the friendliest and most loving of pet birds. With an incredible need for physical attention, they love being petted, hugged, and snuggled. A young bird's attachment and affectionate devotion to you requires that you make sure you have time to play with your pet each day. A neglected Cockatoo may resort to uncontrollable screaming or restless feather picking and these habits are very hard to break. Make sure they have plenty of toys!

A cockatoo is any of the 21 species of bird belonging to the family Cacatuidae. Along with the Psittacidae family ("true" parrots), they make up the order Psittaciformes (all parrots ). The name cockatoo originated from the Malay language kakaktua meaning older sister kakak - sister and tua - old). Cockatoos share many features with other parrots including the characteristic curved beak shape and a zygodactyl foot (two toes forward and two toes back). They differ however in a number of anatomical characteristics, including the often spectacular movable headcrest, and their lack of the Dyck texture feather composition which gives many parrots their iridescent colours. Cockatoo species are on average larger than other parrot species. The Cockatiel though is a small cockatoo and the very biggest parrots are not cockatoos, the Hyacinth Macaw being the longest and the Kakapo the heaviest.

Cockatoos account for 17 of the 330 known species of parrots. These species once occurred naturally in Australia, New Guinea, the islands of Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and the Philippines. The Australian species include the Greater Sulfur Crested, the Gang Gang, Galah (Rose Breasted) Leadbeaters (Major Mitchell's), Bare-eyed, Slenderbilled (Longbilled), Glossy Black, Red-tailed Black, Yellow-tailed Black, White-tailed Black, and the Black Palm. The Indonesian, New Guinea, and other island species include the Umbrella, Lesser Sulfur, Citron, Moluccan, Goffins, Triton, Eleonora, Blue-eyed, Ducrops, and Red-vented.
All cockatoos have moveable crest feathers. Cockatoos not only differ from other parrots because they are crested, but for a few exceptions, they are either black or white. This is caused by the lack of the Dyck texture in their feathers. In other parrots the presence of this feature produces color by the way it reflects light. Cockatoos also lack oil glands, but they do produce a fine powder which is the result of the breakdown of their down feathers. You can always tell if there's a cockatoo in the house look at the TV; it has white powder on the screen. A word of warning this powder can aggravate respiratory problems in some people.
Domestically bred hand-fed babies acquired just after weaning make the best pets. Unweaned babies (still eating formula) can cost less but it is best to let experienced individuals handle the weaning process properly. The larger species, such as the Greater Sulfur Crested or the Moluccan could cost from $1800 to $3000. Smaller members of this group can run from $800 up to $1800.

Cockatoos
Cockatoos live in Australia and some islands of the South Pacific. There are also a great number of Cockatoos in captivity in zoos and as pets. Cockatoos have very strong bills made of hardened keratin. Their bills are usually beige or black, depending on the species of cockatoo. They all have four-toed feet. Two toes point forward and two toes point backwards, this allows them to grasp things quite well.
Cockatoos have long life spans, from 30 to 50 years, and some have survived in captivity for 60 to 70 years. All cockatoos have a bald spot on their head, covered by a crest of feathers. They have a down powder beneath their feathers which provides them with insulation to keep them warm. The down also sheds a thick powder, which the birds use to waterproof and clean their outer feathers. Cockatoos are the only parrots to have powder down.
Cockatoos are very intelligent birds, and can be quite comical. Their life cycle is similar to that of humans. They go through infancy, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and old age. They can even be trained to talk, though their voice is much higher pitched than that of other parrots.
You may think that all cockatoos are white birds with yellow crests, but there are many species of cockatoo. There are even black cockatoos, but they are rare, and most of them live in wildlife parks and zoos.

H ave you ever wondered how an egg becomes a bird? Here's a simple explanation of the process. And if you want to know the story in more depth, here is the detailed version . It is truly amazing. M andy, my Congo African Grey named me "Joanne-Bird." You can call me Joanne R aising birds is fun but far from easy. There's more than one way to do it. One is by making every mistake in the book; the other is by having a wonderful mentor to share all of his or her experience with you, but only as you need it, and as often as you need it. Come and meet my mentor, Patti Yates and her wonderful bird family. T he medical needs of birds are unique. A specialized knowledge of avian medicine can make the difference between the life and death of a precious pet or valued breeder. Colorado is fortunate to have many wonderful avian vets. Click to find an "avian vet" before you actually need one. I t used to be called the living and dining rooms. Now it is called the "bird room." The day the couch was carried out the front door to the waiting Salvation Army truck and my husband watched in horror and amazement, I knew we had become "bird people." Come see the " bird room " and all its inhabitants.

35. Cockatoos - Meet Bucky!
Welcome to World Kids Network Critters area. Come on in and learn all about the cockatoos.

Bucky
The Moluccan cockatoo
This is Bucky! He is a Moluccan cockatoo. Moluccan cockatoos are also known as Salmon-crested cockatoos. Cockatoos are very funny birds. Bucky was especially funny, and quite smart. When Bucky first came to live with us, we knew very little about cockatoos. We certainly had no idea how smart they were.
Bucky was very young when he was captured in the wild and imported to the United States. He had one owner before he came to live with us. Cockatoos become very attached to their owners, even jealous. He quickly warmed up to us though, and his new home. It took a lot of trust on both of our parts. To gain Bucky’s trust, we would lay down on the floor next to his cage, and wait. Cockatoo’s are very curious birds, and it did not take him long to come down and see what it was we were doing. He tentatively crawled around us, watching, until he was certain we meant him no harm. We also learned to trust Bucky, and his powerful beak. It only took a matter of days, and we were all hooked.
Bucky certainly did not like being left alone in the house. When we would leave, we put him in his cage and closed the door, not realizing how smart this bird was. When we returned, he was out of his cage, shredding our drapes in the living room. We decided right then and there, that the clasp that held his cage door shut was not quite good enough. We tried a variety of ways to keep the cage door closed, but Bucky always managed to escape. We eventually got a padlock to keep the door shut when we were gone. We were so happy - ha! We had outsmarted the bird! No way he is getting out of a padlock. We made one minor mistake though, and left the key in the padlock.

A Leader in Breeding Hand Reared Companion Parrots
Specialist Breeders of Eclectus, Conures, Exotics, and Australian Companion Parrots Welcome to Parrot Haven Aviary's web pages . I have tried to produce a web site that is beneficial to all aviculturists. Parrot Haven Aviary specialise in Handreared Baby Parrots. All babies are bred at Parrot Haven Aviary and reared in a family environment, our baby Parrots are completely at ease with other family members and pets. Each baby has a birth certificate and literature containing all the information needed to ensure each pet Parrot stays healthy, happy and free from stress. Our baby Parrots make the ultimate companion bird and the perfect pet. Parrot Haven Aviary is a commercial aviary owned and operated by my wife Lyn and myself (Garry Lee.) Parrot Haven Aviary is devoted to producing only hand reared companion parrots for the companion and pet parrot owners of Australian. Our babies have been incubated and hatched in our incubation room, or raised by their parents until they are around 10 days of age. They are then removed from the nest for hand rearing by us. All of our babies are fed hand rearing formula (commercially made) from a spoon, this allows for more human contact and a much quieter, loving and devoted companion in the end, not afraid to be handled by people. Lynette and I fuss over our babies as though they were our own children, so much that we use the phrase "mummy and daddy" when talking to them (no we are not totally mad, but totally devoted to our babies and the enjoyment that they can and do give us while raising them.)

Cockatoos and African Greys: Are they Really So Different? Part 1 of 2 by Sam Foster and Jane Hallander This article is reprinted from The Pet Bird Report , with permission from the author. It sounds as if these are aliens from two different planets, rather than separate classes of the parrot family. However, what if many of the urban myths about cockatoos and greys are just those urban myths? Maybe these parrots who share 'shades of grey' as their primary coloration have much more in common than we think. Let's take a look at some common misconceptions about cockatoos and greys and the possible reasons behind these misconceptions. Of course, there are exceptions, however the average imported grey or cockatoo, who has no health problems, has already withstood incredible trauma from the capturing process alone. Now it's in a cage, with people who may or may not understand its social needs and yet, there are relatively few who pluck their feathers or become phobic. Why is this? And why do we see few cases of feather plucking among South American and some other Australasian parrot species? There are some who are seldom seen, even out of breeding season, in groups of more than a dozen and others who stay primarily in pairs. Could it not therefore be logical to theorize that the impact of hundreds of thousands of years spent by cockatoos in these assorted environments would have a profound impact on their instinctive behavior, even in a captive environment?

Living With Companion Cockatoos: Broadening the Human Perspective by Sam Foster This article, published in Issue #53 of the Companion Parrot Quarterly, may not be reprinted in part or in full without the express written consent of the author. Our initial entry into the world of aviculture proves many of us to be ashamedly unprepared for the lifelong responsibility we have accepted by opening our homes, and our hearts, to an avian companion. Cockatoos are certainly among the most intriguing and charismatic parrots; yet, the limitations of current data concerning their behaviors and inherent personalities often prove our knowledge and abilities deficient. A question that represents one of the primary challenges facing aviculture today is-how many of you feel that you were armed with the necessary knowledge and emotional fortitude to live harmoniously with these creatures, prior to a Cockatoo entering your life? Just what is the "mystique" that attracts us to those creatures we call Cockatoos? More importantly, why are the relationship challenges between Cockatoos and their caregivers often more than people are prepared, or willing, to accept?
