Cockatiels
By Len LaRiccia
Cockatiels are popular pets, becoming the 2nd most popular pet bird in the United States. Originally from the Australian interior, they look similar to cockatoos, but are much slimmer. Cockatiels have a very distinctive head crest, and long tails in relation to their body size.
Cockatiels are very attractive birds. Wild Cockatiels are normally gray, with yellow coloring on their heads and crests. Breeders have developed many other coloring variations over the years. At Bird Crazy, we often have a good selection of colors.
Proper diet is essential to the health of your Cockatiel. The diet plays an important role in the bird's appearance, health, and happiness. Seeds were the staple diet of most pet birds until recently when pellet diets have become popular. Whether you choose to feed your Cockatiel seeds or pellets, it is a good idea to supplement your bird's diet with fruits and vegetables. Water-soluble vitamin supplements can also help add the proper nutrients to your bird's diet.
Cockatiels spend a lot of their days standing on perches. Make sure you purchase perches of different diameters to help exercise your Cockatiel's feet. Natural tree branches are wonderful, but be sure they are non-toxic before placing them in your bird's cage. Your Cockatiel will enjoy a cage that is large, with plenty of room to spread its wings. The bars should be no further than ¾" apart. Dome-top cages are not recommended for Cockatiels as their feet may get stuck in the bars at the top.

By Bill Jenkins Normal cockatiels ( Nymphicus hollandicus ) are shades of gray, with white patches on the wings. They have a yellow/white face with a bright orange patch over the 'ear', which some think gives cockatiels a clown-face like appearance. Some variations include: Pied (varying white patches cover body); Pearl (each feather retains gray color, with white interspersed); Lutino (Bird white with yellow/white/ orange face); and Albino (white bird). For more information on mutations, visit the National Cockatiel Society's "Color Mutations Reading Room."

Nymphicus hollandicus Albino
(Whiteface - Lutino) Whiteface Cinnamon Pearl Cockatiels are one of the most popular pet birds. The reason is their even tempered personalities. This makes for a perfect first pet bird for most people. They are also good with kids and anyone else. Most cockatiels are sexually dimorphic, which means you can tell the sex of the bird by it's coloring. This is true for most cockatiels except Albinos, Lutinos, and Pieds. Male cockatiels can learn to talk and are more vocal. Females do not talk. When it comes to mutations one thing to know is that Pearl Males lose their pearling after their first molt around 6 months old. After the first molt is also the time when you can tell the sex of the bird. It is important to keep your cockatiel's wings trimmed. This helps with safety and personality. They are very strong flyers. We have heard too many stories of pets that have flown away. For the new owner you should purchase a bird that has been clipped. It is important to watch the bird after it's first molt. The previously trimmed feathers will be replaced with new ones allowing the bird full flight again. 79. PROBLEMS WITH EGG PRODUCTION
Discusses lifethreatening problems in cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, and canaries that include egg binding, prolapse, egg peritonitis, and obturator paralysis.
http://shell.pubnix.net/~mhagen/docu/prob_egg.html
PROBLEMS WITH EGG PRODUCTION
Excessive egg production is a common problem in cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, and canaries. Remember that in the wild, such birds simply find a mate and raise a family. And these wild versions of our pets rarely produce more than one or two sets of eggs per year. But if eggs are laid by a pet bird when no mate or nest is nearby, their failure to hatch may stimulate the bird to lay more. The egg shells require a large amount of calcium, and after 5 or 6 have been laid the bird will sometimes be unable to eat enough calcium to continue. Vitamin D deficiencies will add to the problem as D is required to make the calcium available. This very unnatural situation gives rise to many problems. Egg-binding, prolapsed oviduct, egg peritonitis, and obturator paralysis are all life-threatening consequences. Female birds that lay many eggs may need to be treated with prescription drugs (oral and injectable). All laying hens need several sources of calcium (see below) and proper level of vitamin D Good sources of calcium include broccoli, alfalfa sprouts, fresh alfalfa, cheese, yoghurt, and commercial bird pellets. CALCIUM CARBONATE should also be offered and sources include cuttlebone, mineral blocks, oyster shell, bone meal, and many combination vitamin/mineral supplements (read the label carefully). CALCIUM GLUCONATE is an excellent calcium source and is found in tablet form or in some newer combination supplements (ie
