COCKATIELS:
How Long Do They Live?
by J. Howard Brown
Recently I was shown an article in an American magazine, written by Graeme Hyde, about a cockatiel in England that reached the ripe old age of 28 years, considered to be a record. This article, plus surveying a few friends prompted the following "age is all in the mind: - so 'tis said". It applies also to our feathered friends seemingly. Thirty this year and still going strong! When people come to buy a cockatiel you can bet you’ll be asked - "how long do cockatiels live?" The living proof is there for all to see - a cockatiel who is 30 years old this year (1997), in good feather, sprightly, active and alert.

Nymphicus hollandicus
When I began in Cockatiels in 1986, my aviaries consisted of three flights and six pair of Cockatiels, being Pieds, Pearl Pieds and a Lutino, worth approximately $40 each. There were no Platinums, Cinnamons or Whitefaces to be seen. 1988 saw Platinums generally available here in Brisbane for $150 each. Platinums were then called Cinnamon, or Lacewing Cinnamon in the case of Pearled Platinum because of some brownish tones. Confusion reigned when the true Cinnamon appeared and we had two different mutations with the same name. Australian Birdkeeper in 1988 featured one page of classifieds relating to birds for sale, of which only one ad was for Cockatiels. By comparison, in 1996 some eight pages, covering 120 classifieds, featured 30 for Cockatiels which is indicative of this species growing popularity. Again, on reflecting the year 1989, Cinnamons from Western Australia were commanding $1,300 per pair. Likewise, this year saw West Coast Silvers bringing $1,000 a pair however, some were disappointing and were more grey than silver a rather diluted version of the Normal.

Giardia in Cockatiels
from the NACS Newsletter The 'Tiel Times by
Ann M. Bourke, DVM
Kensington Bird and Animal Hospital
977 Farmington Avenue
Kensington, CT 06037 What is giardia? Giardia is a parasite that lives in the intestinal tract of numerous species. It is a protozoan a type of motile parasite and appears most prevalent in cockatiels. Birds and other animals become infected by ingesting the cysts of giardia, usually by means of contaminated water, but also directly by ingestion of feces containing the cysts. Giardia can survive for a substantial amount of time in the environment, so infection can occur simply by placing a bird in a contaminated cage or aviary. No one is certain as to why cockatiels are over-represented with this disease, but some believe there may be a genetic predisposition or immune deficiency, making this species poorly able to fight off infection on their own. What are giardia's symptoms of infection? Cockatiels with giardiasis are often asymptomatic. They carry the parasite but do not seemed harmed by the infection. The parasite may be detected during routine examination of an otherwise healthy bird. Those showing symptoms can exhibit signs of poor weight gain, shabby feathering, feather plucking, itchiness, or watery droppings. The most common presentation at our practice is a bird with watery droppings and ripping feathers out as if they were painful. How is giardia diagnosed?

Broken Blood Feathers
How to Pull a BROKEN Blood Feather

A blood feather is a new feather that is growing from a follicle in a bird's skin. It contains an artery and a vein with a circulating supply of blood running through the quill. The quill is the part of the feather shaft closest to the body. Blood feathers are often called pin feather because when they first emerge, they look like pins or spikes. The drawing on the left is of a mature feather.
This is my drawing of a growing blood feather. On your cockatiel, the differences between blood feathers and mature feathers are quite visible. A blood feather has a dark bluish/purple quill which is shaped like a very thick tube. The dark color is blood. Mature feathers have an opaque white/gray colored quill and are thin, because as the feather grows, the blood recedes.
Blood feathers are tender and sore.Handling your cockatiel roughly, moving the feathers, or if the bird bumps into something, is painful for your bird. When a blood feather is broken, the bird bleeds profusely and can die. The broken feather needs to be pulled out from the skin, in order to stop the bleeding. Once the feather is pulled, the follicle in the skin closes, the bleeding stops and a new feather begins to grow. If the feather is not pulled, the bird must be closely monitored because as soon as it bumps into something the bleeding will start all over again. The only permanent way to stop bleeding is to pull the broken blood feather out.

We are disease free and keep a closed aviary. Breeding is done all year. The birds are protected from the general public, but use to home environment like TV, music, dogs, outside birds and travel. http://www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/cockatiels.htm
Cockatiels Cockatiels are small Australian parrots. They are related to cockatoos. In the wild, the natural colour of a cockatiel is grey with a yellow face and orange cheek patches. The crest is orange.
Pet cockatiels have been specially bred so there are many different coloured birds. Lutino cockatiels are white, pied cockatiels have patches of dark and light feathers, and there are cinnamon and pearl cockatiels. Cockatiels make chirping and whistling noises. They are intelligent birds and can be taught to perform tricks, whistle and talk. In the wild cockatiels eat seeds, grasses and leaves. They may also eat grubs and insects. They drink fresh water As well as seed, pet cockatiels should also be fed fresh green vegetables such as spinach, chard, carrot tops and herbs. Vegetables such as corn, peas, carrots and broccoli are good too as are apples, pears and berries. They can be given cooked rice and pasta too. After mating with a male cockatiel, the female bird will lay from 3 to 8 eggs. The male and the female take turns at sitting on the eggs. Incubation is for about 21 days and then the eggs hatch. Parent birds feed the chicks for up to 8 weeks. After that the young birds can feed and look after themselves. Cockatiels can live for around 15-20 years.
