Breeding Cockatiels Part 1
The information on these 3 pages are not meant to replace the advice or recommendations of your avian vet. She/he is the best source of information when breeding birds. If you are having problems with a baby, please take it to see an avian vet immediately. These 3 pages do not cover everything that you need to know when breeding birds. It's just a basic overview and were put up to answer the most frequent questions visitors ask me about breeding cockatiels. Please read some of the links on the bottom of this page, especially Avian Pediatrics, Babies-Diseases, Egg Binding, Feeding Problems, Bordatella and Splayed Legs to learn more. Books to help you explore the world of breeding even further are suggested on my bibliography page.
Eggs that are rolled around briskly or eggs that suffer trauma when parents are suddenly startled inside of the nestbox, will addle. Addle means that the contents of the eggs have been shaken or scrambled inside of the shell. When this happens in the early development of a chick, the embryos are destroyed and they will not hatch. Some people deliberately do this when they do not want eggs to hatch. If you kill a baby this way it's the same thing as a bird abortion. This is a moral issue and the decision to addle an egg rests with an individual's conscience. I personally do not agree with the practice. When embryos die of natural causes, later in their development as chicks, they are referred to as DIS, "Dead in the Shell" babies. There is a link to an article on the bottom of this page, "Eggs Not Hatching", that will provide you with some of the main causes of DIS babies. Please take the time to read it.

About Cockatiels Family: Cacatuidae Nymphicus hollandicu
Cockatiels are about as close to the perfect pet as you can get! With their happy personality and easygoing nature, these attractive little parrots will soon win you over, lavishing you with love and attention!
In their native habitat, the arid interior of Australia, these small parrots are quite nomadic. They travel in flocks following food availability, settling in scrubby low desert vegetation but always close to water, such as creeks and rivers.; When their food supply dwindles they move on. The cockatiels native habitat has made them well suited as pets. They are hardy, adapt easily to change, and are easy to breed. A big plus is that cockatiels are not noisy and can be left alone for long periods of time. Their intelligence and inquisitiveness makes them easy to train. This coupled with a very gentle nature makes them a pet that children can safely care for!

Do you live in an apartment or condominium? Are there children about? Are you on the go a lot or gone for extended periods of time? Do you have a limited pet budget? Do you like to be greeted and admired? If so, then the cockatiel could very well be just the pet for you and your family!
Cockatiels are one of the most popular pets! They have continued to grow in popularity since the first Europeans returned home from Australia with these gentle endearing little birds, vying for this top pet bird position only with the parakeet and the canary. They are one of 52 species of parrot native to Australia, and are one of Australia's fastest flyers. Australians call them the "Quarrian".

Cockatiels Nymphicus Hollandicus
General
Cockatiels are small parrots, related to the cockatoos. They originate from Australia. They have many qualities that make them popular pet birds, and they have been bred by humans for many generations. (All the cockatiels sold in Finland have been born in Finland.) Their life expectancy is around 15-20 years, but one famous cockatiel lived to be 38. The natural colour of a cockatiel is grey with a yellow face and crest and with orange cheek patches. Among pet cockatiels there are lots of other colour varieties, the most popular of which are the lutino (white), pied (patches of dark and light feathers), cinnamon, and pearl. Cockatiels are intelligent and amusing pets, which need lots of attention and can learn to perform tricks, whistle tunes, and talk. If a pet cockatiel does not have other bird buddies, he should be given the chance to regularly interact with his human friends.
Klonkku
Klonkku is our pet cockatiel, born in 1990. He is fairly tame, likes to sit on a shoulder, watch TV and type on the keyboard (in fact parts of this may have been written by him...). He loves taking showers and hates nail-clipping. He can not 'speak', but he is a talented singer and whistler. He knows several tricks, like getting on/off a finger/shoulder on command, going into his cage (where he spends his time when nobody else is at home) etc. The trick that our friends find most hilarious though is the 'shitting on command'. This, however, is particularly useful it's not easy to housebreak a bird, but it is possible!

COLOR IN COCKATIELS
Anthony Olszewski The cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus, or Quarrion, is a perfect avicultural subject. Originally from Australia, many thousands are reared commercially worldwide for the pet industry. The American Cockatiel Society has established a standard of excellence for the exhibition minded fancier. The cockatiel now occurs in six well-established mutations. These factors, three sex-linked recessive and three autosomal recessive, all affect the coloration of the plumage. Some traits also change the eye color from black to red. Many other color variants are reported. Some of these new colors are definite mutations in the process of becoming established. Others are simply combinations of pre-existing varieties or are imaginitive names used in sales pitches. The normal cockatiel is slate grey, reminiscent of a blue domestic pigeon. Some white extends from the wing butt down the outer edge of the wing. The cheeks have orange patches. A yellow suffusion covers the entire bird, more so in the males. The yellow suffusion is especially prominent in the head and crest of the cock. Adult hens have horizontal bars going down the tail.
