We pull our baby cockatiels ( bird breeders jargon for removing a chick from the SUGGESTED READING. cockatiels, Their Care, Feeding, and Breeding

COCKATIELS - ADVICE FROM A BREEDER by Linda Greeson So many books and articles have been written about Cockatiels I really hesitated for a long time before presuming to add yet another. I have read just about everything that has been written about these delightful little birds and feel that through my experience with them I can add some information that has not already been covered, as well as briefly some of the well known basic facts so widely presented. There is good reason for the wealth of information currently available. Except for the Budgerigar, the Cockatiel is rated as the most popular and widely kept of the approximately 340 species of the order of psittacine birds. They are a hardier bird than their rival, the Budgie, and have a life span of 15 to 20 years versus the Budgie's 7 to 8. They are gentle and sociable by nature and have pert, bright personalities. They quickly pick up words and phrases and especially love to whistle. Their speech may not be as clear as that of the larger birds, but they are by comparison much less expensive. There is no more ideal pet for the novice than a young, hand fed Cockatiel. For the breeder, especially those just starting this experience, the choice of Cockatiels is an excellent one. Even though we have bred many varieties of larger exotic birds for many years with considerable success, our prolific Cockatiels can always be depended on to pay their feed bills. In addition to the financial return I have found that the study involved each year in making the right decisions in setting up my breeding pairs to be all absorbing. When the these decisions result in larger and more beautiful birds, this hobby almost becomes an addiction! Having one of your own baby birds grow up to make the top bench at a show is thrilling beyond words and inspires one to greater concentration on producing even better specimens each following year.

Chiko
This is Chiko. She is the first cockatiel I ever owned and has spoiled me into being obsessed with cockatiels. I got Chiko in February 1986 and she's still the biggest baby I've ever had. If I leave the room, she will let me know I forgot her by screaming at me, so I have to go back and take her with me. Don't know what I would ever do without this character.
DJ came along next - I got him from a girlfriend of mine for babysitting her birds while she was on vacation. I had a tough choice, because DJ and another bird looked exactly alike, but when he started singing, I knew I wanted him. He got his name because he sounded like a radio DJ auditioning for my attention! His mate is Snowy who will be shown later. DJ's first love was a cockatiel named Pepper, who I got from a co-worker, but later I had to have Pepper put to sleep because she became so crippled up she couldn't sit on her perch or walk - it was a hard thing to put her down, and DJ was extremely depressed for about 2 days, but then like most men, moved on with her life with Snowy!!! I have been treating DJ for allergies ever since I got him and he also has liver trouble; therefore, all my birds eat pelleted food and it has helped DJ feel much better.

Cockatiels and Lovebirds
A small introduction
Warning: This is just an intro page. I am not a trained aviculturalist. This is not and should not be your final guide to bird-keeping!! IF YOUR BIRD IS SICK OR INJURED PLEASE TAKE IT TO AN AVIAN VET!!! I'm limiting this to cockatiels and lovebirds because I have only owned two cockatiels and one lovebird (and a bunch of untame budgies). Larger parrots share much in common with these smaller members of the family, but their needs and their abilities differ greatly. If you are planning on getting a pet bird, or are a new owner, I highly recommend the magazine BIRD TALK . In addition, you should buy/borrow books on bird keeping at a library, bookstore, or good petstore. And definitely locate a good, qualified avian vet right away, if you haven't already! He or she will be much more qualified to answer your health/medical questions than me. Other related pages at this site:

    THE CHARM OF COCKATIELS
    by Amy Patria
With a scientific name like Nymphicus hollandicus, it's hard to imagine the wonderful personalities these little characters called Cockatiels possess. They can rival the antics of parrots much larger than themselves, including their larger cousins, the cockatoos. They can smoothly charm you into almost anything if the mood so strikes them. And.... breeders of these little cuties have added new dimensions to the ways they can catch your eye. Cockatiels now grace our world with many beautiful color mutations which are a far departure from the original, but still beautiful, Grey cockatiel. At present, you can find cockatiels in an assortment of colors ranging from the normal Grey, to yellow, white, soft cocoa brown (cinnamon), pastel tan (fallow) and silver. Some breeders are even working on green mutations. Cockatiels may have normal markings or be pearl, pied, totally white or be in combinations like pearl pied. They can possess yellow, orange, pale peach (as in pastelface), Grey, soft brown or white cheek patches. They even come in combinations like cinnamon pearl pied whitefaces. These are mainly white with a soft cocoa brown color in their wings and in patches on their bodies. The patches have a lacy pattern, referred to as pearl markings. The females of this mutation normally have soft brown cheek patches (sometimes barely visible) while the males have all white faces with no other color to their cheeks.

    FATTY LIVER DISEASE IN COCKATIELS
    Hepatic Lipidosis
    by Iris Brzezinski
The diagnosis of Hepatic Lipidosis (Fatty Liver disease) can be one of the most frightening to hear uttered by your avian veterinarian. However this does not always have to carry the sentence of death. Lets review some of the reasons why a parrot develops liver disease and what can be done to prevent this from happening to your birds. A liver that is healthy and functioning well is important to the life of any bird. In the bird's body the liver acts like a big filter through which many toxins pass and are removed from causing harm to the bird. One of the most common problems seen in avian species is fatty infiltrates into the liver. Fatty liver disease is certainly one of the most common metabolic disorders that affects all psittacines. It is possible that there is a correlation between vitamin deficiency and the development of fatty liver disease. The B vitamin Choline is felt to be one, which if deficient, will allow for fatty infiltrates into the liver. "Choline is present in all living cells and facilitates the movement of fats into the cells. It combines with fatty acids and phosphoric acid in the liver to form lecithin. Choline is required for the production of acetycholine, a neurotransmitter. Choline is found in most animal tissue and is necessary for nerve function and fat metabolism, protects against poor growth and a fatty liver." The lipotropic ("acting on fat metabolism by hastening removal, or decreasing the deposit of fat in the liver") vitamins that are best supplemented in cases of fatty liver disease are Choline, biotin, and methionine.

Article IV - Breeding Cockatiels
    BREEDING COCKATIELS
    by Amy Patria
One advantage to breeding cockatiels is that they aren't extremely hard to pair up and get results. But, if you are breeding for real quality (large, well shaped, well marked, good natured) birds, it's a bit more of a challenge. Anyone can just place a nestbox on a cage, place two cockatiels of the opposite sex in it, and let nature take it's course. But, responsible breeding takes a lot more thought and time than that. In preparing to breed your cockatiels, you have to consider the health of the breeders, their colors and appearance (and what colors you want to end up with) as well as their temperaments. If you want to breed certain mutations, then you will need to familiarize yourself with some basic genetics concepts and how they affect mutations. You also must prepare a cage which will allow the necessary exercise and space during the breeding, brooding, fledging, and weaning stages. In addition to that, you must provide a nestbox which is suitable for the breeding pair and up to around 6 or so babies as they grow. Sexing
Be sure you start with a true pair. It is possible for females to lay infertile eggs without a male present. It's hard to sex some cockatiels due to their mutations. The lutino whiteface (a.k.a. albino) and the heavy pied mutations are nearly impossible to visually sex due to the lack of any darker color in their tail feathers and their wings. Generally, if the bird is extremely vocal, it's a male, but some females also have this ability.
