FAMILY LEPTOTYPHLOPIDAE (slender blind snakes)
This family of snakes is composed of 50 species in two families. They are generally regarded as the most primitive snakes, having a pelvic girdle and vestiglial hind limbs. They have a single lung and oviduct and are well adapted to their burrowing life style. They feed exclusively on small invertebrates such as ant and termite larvae. Leptotyphlopids are oviparous. There are two species of this family in North America. Leptotyphlops dulcis Texas Blind Snake Leptotyphlops humilis Western Blind Snake
FAMILY BOIDAE (boas and pythons)
Boidae is a large family of snakes that includes all five of the world's giant snakes. Boids are an ancient family that are characterized by a mixture of modern and primitive traits. They have flexible jaws found in more advanced families but also retain a pelvic girdle, vestigial hind limbs, and many use both lungs. While there are close to one hundred species of boids worldwide, there are only two species of boas found in North America, both in the sub-family Eryciniae. a. Nonpoisonous Snakes. There are approximately 130 different varieties of nonpoisonous snakes in the United States. They have oval-shaped heads and round eyes. Unlike poisonous snakes, discussed below, nonpoisonous snakes do not have fangs with which to inject venom. See Figure 6-1 for characteristics of a nonpoisonous snake. b. Poisonous Snakes. Poisonous snakes are found throughout the world, primarily in tropical to moderate climates. Within the United States, there are four kinds: rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins (cottonmouth), and coral snakes. Poisonous snakes in other parts of the world include sea snakes, the fer-de-lance, the bushmaster, and the tropical rattlesnake in tropical Central America; the Malayan pit viper in the tropical Far East; the cobra in Africa and Asia; the mamba (or black mamba) in Central and Southern Africa; and the krait in India and Southeast Asia. See Figure 6-2 for characteristics of a poisonous pit viper. c. Pit Vipers (Poisonous).

Cobra A very poisonous snake native to Africa and Asia. The common Cobra of India and the Egyptian cobra are often used by snake charmers. The large hood of the Indian cobra has a spectacle like pattern . The asiatic king cobra or hamadryad , which can grow to a length of 14 to 18 ft., but its hood has no pattern which it spreads, as does the common Cobra, when agitated or startled. Several of the African species can eject a spray of venom to a distance of at least 6 ft.. The poison of a spitting Cobra of the southern regions of Africa is often aimed at the victim's eyes causing great pain . If not all washed out promptly, it can cause short term blindness . The asiatic Krait , the African mamba , the Australian tiger snake and death adder, and the coral snakes of the new world are related to the Cobra. COBRA SNAKE
The Cobra is the most feared of all poisonous snakes. Cobra De Capello is Portuguese for ‘Hooded Snake’.At an average length of six feet, with a brownish skin, glaring eyes, darting tongue, hissing breath and spoonshaped hood, it rates as one of the most dangerous snakes in the world.
It is a silent, stealthy hunter feeding on insects, lizards, frogs and small mammals, such as rats and mice. The Cobra snake favours warm, dry regions where water is readily available. As the cobra grows it sheds it skin.
The cobra's venom glands are essentially modified salivary glands, through which the cobra injects its victim. Even given its dangerous properties the Cobra still remains the favourite of snake charmers. Death from cobra snakebite is one of the oldest fates of mankind. In ancient Egypt every ‘healer’ was required to know the repertoire of spells for conjuring the poison of every serpent.
Pharaoh would often wear a representation of the wide hooded Cobra on his crown as an emblem of royalty. From this position the cobra was said to be able to defend the king.

A Cobra Encounter In Vietnam By LTC Curtis E. Harper, USAR (Retired) In December of 1968, I was assigned to Charlie Company, 3rd Platoon, 1 st of the 50 th Infantry, 173 rd Airborne Brigade in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam. I was an infantry platoon leader and our job was to perform search and clear patrols and set up ambushes for the enemy. Many times while on patrol we would encounter snakes. Some members of my platoon told of snakes crawling over them during nighttime ambushes, having no idea whether the snake was venomous or not. That could make for a long night. On January 26 th , 1969, we were patrolling in the Vietnamese central highlands, southeast of the infamous Mang Yang pass. My infantry platoon was working on a search and destroy mission and it was a cool, sunny morning. We were in a high plateau area that had been fertile farmland years prior, before war had forced the people to move to settlement areas. The area was overgrown with large fields of elephant grass and half acre patches of thick vegetation. The jungle was trying desperately to take back over, but fires started by artillery and bombs held back the growth of grass and jungle.
