The world's longest venomous snake, with a bite potent enough to kill an elephant. And no one knows that better than Romulus Whitaker, the Founder-Director of the Madras Snake Park who has spent most of his life in India wandering around the jungles of Western Ghats, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in his quest for King Cobras. Whitaker's Emmy award winning film on the real King of the Jungle explores the relationship between the charismatic cobra and creatures such as the forest tortoise, vine snakes, cow elephants, and giant squirrels. The film shot mainly in the rainforests of Kerala is a result of two years of intensive research in which Whitaker and his team travelled the length and breadth of Western Ghats, Orissa and contacted every zoo that breeds the King Cobra to know its habits. " We also set up a breeding programme in captivity to get the best shots of the female cobra laying eggs and then hatching them," says Whitaker. But the filming wasn't without its perils. The team's cameraman escaped narrowly when the King Cobra struck him on the head when he was trying to get a close shot of the snake without using the remote. Even Whitaker had a miraculous escape. When they were filming a fight between two King Cobras Whitaker got too close and one of the cobras pounced upon his back and hit him on his behind. " Luckily," says Whitaker, " It missed biting me. Though the venom of the King Cobra is less toxic than the common cobra, its massive glands have been known to yield over seven ccs of venom in a single extraction which is enough to wipe out an elephant."

Minoan Snake Goddess Christopher L. C. E. Witcombe Following his discussion of the snake as a household deity, Evans comments on the similarity in the position of the snake raising its head above the hat of the principal "Snake Goddess" (Evans here ignoring the fact that this particular detail of the figurine is his own reconstruction - see Evans's "Snake Goddess" ) and that of the Egyptian uraeus (rearing cobra snake) on the head of Hathor and other Egyptian goddesses. In particular, Evans tentatively links the "Snake Goddess" with the Egyptian Goddess Wazet (i.e. Wadjyt), the snake goddess of the Nile Delta, but does not pursue the connection. It is clear that the Minoans borrowed much their culture and various cult practices from Egypt. Numerous Egyptian objects of one kind or another were found by Evans at Knossos. The most spectacular discovery was the lower part of diorite statue of a seated Egyptian figure identified from the hieroglyphic inscriptions as a priest of Wadjyt (or Wadjet; written as Wazet by Evans; and as Uatchet, or Uatchit, by Budge [see Budge in the BIBLIOGRAPHY As was noted above, sacred to Wadjyt was the cobra snake which in the form of the

It can grow up to eighteen feet long and can weigh up to two hundred pounds. The King Cobra is vicious. When the King Cobra is scared or excited it will spread it's neck into a "hood" creating long ribs that extend the loose skin of the neck behind the cobras' heads. This is how cobras usually attack readies for the attack. and a fine warning.. Habitats: The One of the king cobras natural habitats is the cool undergrowth of rain forests. It often stays near streams, where the temperature and humidity are relatively constant. It spends almost a fourth of its time up in trees or bushes, but also likes plains and mangrove swamps. As deforestation causes the kings habitat to shrink, it can find itself in enemy territory the human realm of tea estates and villages. Breeding: Potential mates find each other by sending “scent messages.” Both males and females give off a musk is the mating season. When a male picks up the scent of a nearby female he pursues her and rubs her with his head. If she's not interested, he persists by using his head to butt and push her around. Once she's aroused, the male inserts the nearest of his pair of hemipenes, genitals stored inside the tail, just behind his vent. The pair can stay joined like this for hours. Scientists think that some king cobras mate for life. King cobras are the only snakes to make nests. These consist of mounds of leaves (preferably bamboo) that the queen whips together with her body coils. Its a two-story affair: The eggs are laid in a bottom chamber and the queen lies coiled in the upper layer.

Page Last Updated : September 19,2005 Q Are there snake charmers in India? A Yes. There are snake charmers all over India, who provide street side entertainment. The snakes are typically cobras (those with a hood and S mark; they are deadly poisonous). The charmer blows a horn (called Pungi) to which the snake seems to dance. The snake charmers also exhibit other types of snakes like pythons, and sometimes arrange Snake Vs. Mongoose fights for the audience. Q Why are snakes worshipped in India A Snakes have a very important role in Indian mythologies and beliefs (you can see their depiction in this section at Kamat's Potpourri). Snakes are both feared and revered in India. There is a festival called Naga Panchami that is dedicated for the purpose. Q Are the Indian snakes poisonous A There are both poisonous as well as non-poisonous snakes in India; the viper, the krait, the cobra, and the king cobra have venom and are deadly. The Indian children are taught to identify these snakes in the schools and also to provide first aid in the case of bites. Q How does the snake charmer make the cobra dance?

Naja naja Description: Also known as the Asiatic cobra. Usually slate gray to brown overall. The back of the hood may or may not have a pattern. Characteristics: A very common species responsible for many deaths each year. When aroused or threatened, the cobra will lift its head off the ground and spread its hood, making it more menacing. Its venom is highly neurotoxic, causing respiratory paralysis with some tissue damage. The cobra would rather retreat if possible, but if escape is shut off, it will be a dangerous creature to deal with. Habitat: Found in any habitat cultivated farms, swamps, open fields, and human dwelling where it searches for rodents.

Ophiophagus hannah Description: Uniformly olive, brown, or green with ringlike crossbands of black. Characteristics: Although it is the largest venomous snake in the world and it has a disposition to go with this honor, it causes relatively few bites on humans. It appears to have a degree of intelligence. It avoids attacking another venomous snake for fear of being bitten. It feeds exclusively on harmless species. The female builds a nest then deposits her eggs. Lying close by, she guards the nest and is highly aggressive toward anything that closely approaches the nest. Its venom is a powerful neurotoxin. Without medical aid, death is certain for its victims. Habitat: Dense jungle and cultivated fields.

The snake farm is an attraction in Bangkok for tourists from all parts of the world. It is visited by scientists, educational bodies and distinguished visitors. Different kinds of poisonous snakes found in the country are kept for venom extraction which is demonstrated to the public at scheduled hours. These venomous snakes are brought in alive by snakecatchers who are farmers by profession and they are paid for at prices according to size and species. Poisonous snakes found in Thailand are Cobra, King Cobra, Banded Krait, Russell's Viper, a few species of Pit Vipers and some species of Sea Snakes. Numerous kinds of snakes other than mentioned above, though common in this country are not of importance to human lives because they are slightly poisonous or nonpoisonous. Their bites often cause alarm but generally are not dangerous. Features of Snakes: By nature, snakes are not aggressive and will attack human beings only under provocation. They see better at night and therefore will not naturally be seen around in broad daylight. Snakes have no external ears and are deaf to sounds. A snake can quickly perceive the approach of a footstep by the vibration conveyed through the ground with which it's body is in contact. The tongue is an organ of smell.

Most snakes are harmless to people - but a few are deadly A Thai man who held a world record for time spent with snakes has died after being bitten by one of his pet cobras.
Boonreung Bauchan - known as the Snake Man - suffered a venomous bite in the elbow while he was showing villagers a deadly snake, a hospital doctor said. He took herbal medicine and a shot of whiskey, and continued with the show until he collapsed, the doctor added. By the time Mr Boonreung was taken to hospital, the poison had spread through his body. He won a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records after spending seven days in an enclosure with snakes in 1998. The 34-year-old from Thailand's north-eastern Si Sa Ket province was supporting his family with income from his snake shows, according to The Nation newspaper. It quoted his father as saying that boxes of pet snakes were still at the house.

G.I. JOE #1 (July 1982)
The man known as Snake-Eyes remains a mystery to most people. One of the most secretive operatives in the military, much of his past is unknown. Snake-Eyes grew up somewhere in the United States, along with his twin sister, Terri. Brother and sister were very close throughout their youth. He would carry her picture with him for good luck during his military career. Three years later, Snake-Eyes was serving on Long Range Recon Patrol (LRRP) with Stalker and Storm Shadow in the jungles of Vietnam. They were accompanied by three other soldiers: Wade Collins, Ramon Escobedo and Dick Saperstein. The group stumbled upon an encampment of North Vietnamese soldiers and a firefight ensued. Collins, Saperstein and Escobedo were all believed killed in the attack. Snake-Eyes, Stalker and Storm Shadow all retreated to a landing zone for rescue. As the three soldiers ran across a field toward the extraction chopper, they were fired upon. Snake-Eyes was hit badly and Stalker ordered Storm Shadow to leave him. Storm Shadow refused, running back to save his friend and to Stalker's amazement, he evaded all enemy fire and retrieved Snake-Eyes. Vengeance returned to Snake-Eyes' life when he once again met Storm Shadow, now a member of Cobra and Cobra Commander's bodyguard. He confronted Storm Shadow but discovered that he had not killed the Hard Master and had infiltrated Cobra, hoping to discover who killed his uncle. After that, Snake-Eyes continued his missions for the Joe team. He was later attacked by Cobra at his mountain retreat. In the ensuing battle his cabin was destroyed. On leave, Snake-Eyes and Scarlett were attacked by Cobra Crimson Guardsmen led by Fred II. He was defeated, but not before he pulled off Snake-Eyes' mask and saw his scarred face.

Up until a few years ago, smoke bombs and cobra snake eggs were perfectly fine Glory be to the cobra Black snakes, perennial bore but still one we love.
http://www.x-entertainment.com/articles/0908/
Independence Day is at hand, and you know what that means fireworks and alcohol. Tonight we check out the former, not an easy feat since the spirited little explosives are absolutely illegal here in NY. I could head to Chinatown and seek out a rebel wirf rah rause, or I can trek out into other cities where it's a-OK to buy enough M80s to kill Dumbo. Better yet, I could dust off an old bag of shitty fireworks leftover from last year's search, take some pictures, and check another "holiday special" off the site calendar. Look out, Yom Kippur. You're next, and I don't know jack shit about you.
So yeah, there's what's leftover from 2003. Nothing particularly "good," but a lot of the cheap classics are represented. And, in heavenly order, at least one of them is shaped like a tank. Up until a few years ago, smoke bombs and cobra snake eggs were perfectly fine and dandy even here in the land of illegal Fourth of July fun. Couldn't find anything this year besides the "Pop Pop" snappers, otherwise known as Phony Fireworks, I'm Not Buying It.
With nothing better to do on a late, sunny Friday afternoon, the decision to bug the Hell out of our neighbors with an early smoke invasion was easily come upon. Pound for pound, there's few things in the world more exciting than lighting the fuse of something that will ultimately be pretty and on fire. From Roman Candles to Saturn Magic Sunballs of Pain, no celebration of the United States is complete without blowing something the fuck up. Like I, surely some of you have endured an Independence Day
