Cobol, Programming C
Index Key: CSI017 Author: Eagle Eye Subject: Cobol, Programming C Text: What is the Cobol language primarily used for? Would you suggest taking this class after a Pascal course, or am I repeating myself? Response #: 1 of 1 Author: Chris Baker Text: Cobol WAS primarily used in the business community to program database type services, but it is really on its way out. You should really look at C and object orientated C. These are THE languages, especially in science, along with FORTRAN (mostly math and science only). I really recommend C, it is the natural step up from Pascal.

Sun Valley Systems 4522 Shadow Ridge Parkway; Pinson, Alabama 35126-2192 This is a pretty significant update, with new sections added for PowerBasic compilers, all the QuickBasic programs have been updated, and all the C programs now come with executables. The programs, routines and files below are only a tiny fraction of the many I have written over more than thirty-five years of programming for a living. I am placing them into the Public Domain, you may download and use them as you wish. Some of the programs are useful themselves, and some of the programs contain useful subroutines and functions. A few of the categories are currently empty or minimal; I will be adding and updating entries from time to time. If you find the programs useful, or encounter a bug, please let me know. Experience with at least one structured programming language Description This course is specially designed for COBOL programmers seeking to design and develop applications using the Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE). Based on InferData's well-received training methodologies, the course provides for a rapid and efficient transition to object-oriented software development using J2SE. The attendees are expected to be familiar with COBOL or some other structured programming language. Experience with object orientation would be helpful but is not required. This five-day course covers topics in object-orientation, the basics of programming using Java, including syntax, compilation, packaging and deployment. The J2SE class library and architecture are also covered as well as multi-threaded programming in Java. Other topics covered include concepts in "Interface based design for de-coupled and concurrent development". The Java class libraries covered include: Java utilities, input and output (I/O), web based client development using Java "Applets", a brief introduction to graphical user interfaces development using the Java Swing library, and an introduction to the Java Database Connectivity (JDBC). Where applicable, all the concepts will be conveyed in a way such that COBOL programmers can relate to their familiar COBOL counterparts.

Object-oriented COBOL syntax for Java interoperability
Enterprise COBOL supports Java™-based object-oriented syntax to facilitate the interoperation of COBOL and Java programs. The syntax is based upon the facilities of the Java Native Interface, the primary means that Java provides for interoperating with non-Java programs.
Object-oriented COBOL syntax is designed to enable you to write COBOL programs that:
      • Create object instances of Java classes.

    COBOL
COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) was the first widely-used high-level programming language for business applications. Many payroll, accounting, and other business application programs written in COBOL over the past 35 years are still in use and it is possible that there are more existing lines of programming code in COBOL than in any other programming language. While the language has been updated over the years, it is generally perceived as out-of-date and COBOL programs are generally viewed as legacy applications. COBOL was an effort to make a programming language that was like natural English, easy to write and easier to read the code after you'd written it. The earliest versions of the language, COBOL-60 and -61, evolved to the COBOL-85 standard sponsored by the Conference on Data Systems Languages (CODASYL). In years immediately preceding the year , many COBOL programs required change to accommodate the new century. Programmers with COBOL skills were in demand by major corporations and contractors. A number of companies have updated COBOL and sell development tools that combine COBOL programming with relational databases and the Internet.

You've probably heard some of the buzz surrounding the Microsoft .NET Framework. With that buzz have come announcements from a wide variety of language vendors indicating support for the new initiative. The questions arise: "Why is Microsoft interested in having so many languages target the new environment? Why bother with a language as old as COBOL?" The answer lies in recognizing that most businesses do not have the luxury of rewriting their large code base every time they want to extend the use of their existing applications. By supporting the new Microsoft .NET Framework, Fujitsu Software is endorsing Microsoft's philosophy that programmers want and need to be able to use the programming language best suited to their application. With an estimated 70 percent of production business applications written in COBOL, the answer to enhancing those applications lies not in throwing out the COBOL, but in finding better ways to make it do new things.
