Although mathematical expressions can also be written like other programming languages (see example below), its verbose mode is very readable for a novice. For example, multiply hourly-rate by hours-worked giving gross-pay is self-explanatory. COBOL is structured into the following divisions:

B C D ... Programming COBOL
COBOL (Common Business Oriented Language) was the first widely-used high-level programming language for business applications. Many payroll, accounting, and other business application programs written in COBOL over the past 35 years are still in use and it is possible that there are more existing lines of programming code in COBOL than in any other programming language. While the language has been updated over the years, it is generally perceived as out-of-date and COBOL programs are generally viewed as legacy applications. COBOL was an effort to make a programming language that was like natural English, easy to write and easier to read the code after you'd written it. The earliest versions of the language, COBOL-60 and -61, evolved to the COBOL-85 standard sponsored by the Conference on Data Systems Languages (CODASYL). In years immediately preceding the year , many COBOL programs required change to accommodate the new century. Programmers with COBOL skills were in demand by major corporations and contractors. A number of companies have updated COBOL and sell development tools that combine COBOL programming with relational databases and the Internet.

    Article by : Duane Bong
    Introduction to COBOL
COBOL is an acronym for Common Business Oriented Language. It is one of the earliest high level computer programming languages; meaning that it uses English words to express it's instructions. Computer programmers find this easier to understand than machine code [a series of '1's and '0's that computers understand]. The initial standard for COBOL was proposed in 1960. Since then, it has been continuously improved with new revisions being released in 1968, 1974, 1985 and 2002.
    COBOL Applications
Today, C language is the preferred choice for programming and COBOL is seldom used to write new software. However, up until the 1980s, much business software was written in COBOL. These include payroll, accounting and banking applications. Due to the high cost of upgrading to new software, many COBOL programs are still in use today. It is estimated that, over the years, as many as 12 million COBOL applications have been written [many of which are proprietary and difficult to replace].
    COBOL Advantages / Disadvantages
Some of the advantages of COBOL are that it caters well for business needs and is easily portable to different operating systems or platforms. However, the language is considered to be rather wordy with an overly rigid format. A further disadvantage is that COBOL lacks many of the programming instructions required by the scientific community.

    COBOL and .NET
By Wilson Price and Wayne Rippin
This book describes the basic functions found in Micro Focus Net Express® with .NET, the market-leading COBOL development environment for extending core business processes to the .NET framework and other open platforms. It is particularly relevant for novice developers who want to acquire the skill to program in both the traditional, as well as the .NET environment. It is also well suited for veteran COBOL developers who wish to upgrade their skill level.
This is a hands-on book. It is about working using COBOL, on a par with other .NET languages, through the Microsoft Visual Studio Interactive Development Environment. In a nutshell it shows by example how to exploit the functionality of the .NET Framework using COBOL.
Examples in this book are organized as solutions, consistent with Visual Studio technique for designating applications. The Examples CD included with this book contains 51 solutions, each illustrating one or more new topics. Many of these examples use Visual Basic Windows forms for the user interface component. Each solution using Visual Basic also included the equivalent C# project for your perusal.
You will need a copy of Micro Focus Net Express with .NET or Net Express with .NET University Edition. To purchase book or Net Express:
