Developing A Culture For Your Program
By Shane Dreiling If you would carefully study any successful sports team or corporation, I would bet that you would quickly discover a specific culture that pervades the organization. The dictionary defines culture as “the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes a company or corporation.” This could just as easily be said for a basketball team.

104. The Latest Tip
COACH WYATT S LATEST TIP. EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS. GLAD TO HELP IF I CAN BUT, PLEASE. So that is what I teach now and it works great.
http://www.coachwyatt.com/tip_latest.html
BACK TO HOME COACH WYATT'S LATEST TIP E-MAIL YOUR QUESTIONS OR SUGGESTIONS. GLAD TO HELP IF I CAN... BUT, PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF - FIRST AND LAST NAME AND WHERE YOU'RE FROM I am constantly amazed at the people I've never even met or corresponded with who e-mail me with a question right off the wall and don't identify themselves - don't even bother to sign their name. Maybe it's the influence of the Web and its culture of anonymity, but it used to be that everyone knew that it is common courtesy to identify yourself when you call someone on the phone or to sign your name when you write. I sometimes get mail from guys who have seem to have no last names. They've never written me before, yet they'll sign their e-mail "Tim," (or "Rob" or "Fred") - in a world in which people long ago adopted the convention of using surnames so the rest of us could tell one Tim from another. Anyhow, call it a hangup, but I could care less - I learned long ago as a coach to hang up on anonymous callers and throw away unsigned mail, and I'm not going to change now. I don't engage in anonymous discussions on the Internet, and I won't take the time to reply to people who won't let me know who they are. So please, please, please... If you've written to me with a question and you haven't received an answer... go back and read what you wrote.

Becoming a Championship Player: Five-Star's Individual Improvement Program with Mike Moreau Championship Productions and Five-Star Basketball DVD Cost $39.95 item #championship-BD-02348C A Sound System of Teaching Individual Skills For over 40 years Five-Star Basketball Camps have provided some of the best individual skills instruction in the game. Over 60 past or current NBA Coaches honed their skills in the Five-Star Camp system and over 300 players under them who proceeded to the League as well. Their collective experiences have created both a tremendously sound system of teaching players, but also a wide array of coaches and content to share with the coaching community. This DVD Five-Star's Individual Improvement Program is one of 7 newly released DVD's produced by Championship Productions. We will be reviewing each of the others in the coming months. Leigh Klein, Executive Director of Five-Star International opens the DVD by simply sharing the Five-Star approach to educating coaches and players. It can be summed in a few short words, you become what you practice. Five-Star has made a science out of refining how to teach good basketball players great skills to become great players.

Some of the 30 coaches are fulltime; some teach half the time; some are assigned to a single school; some serve as many as eight schools.

Send This Article to a Friend By John Norton Results , February 2000 How coaching works Standards-based reform Inventing their jobs Two weeks of intensive training kicked off the new work for teacher-coaches but coaches largely invented their job as they went along. Area C science coach Connie Roth said there was a lack of clarity about their roles. "There was no job description that really answered my questions about exactly what I was supposed to do," says Roth. Resistance to change Most first- and second-year teachers who have had the opportunity to work with coaches (still a small minority in the district) say coaching provides more support than mentoring. Mentor teachers may have as little as three years of experience, while coaches are almost always teachers with many years of experience and a record of excellence. "A mentor with three or four years experience may be very willing to help with something like lesson planning," says teacher Jeff Shidler, "but the lesson planning is not as good as the person who has 17 years under their belt." The Power of Positive Coaching About the author John Norton is editor of the Focused Reporting Project. This article is excerpted with permission from
