Major League Coaching Tips
Special thanks to Pete Loven for the attached contribution!
Coaching in the Major League
There is a noticeable difference in coaching a major league team compared to a rookie or even minor league team. It can be just as much fun for the coaches and the kids, but in order to relax and have fun you need to be prepared
There is more competitiveness and seriousness to the majors. Opposing coaches seem to know a lot more than you and the umpires are not as forgiving as they were in the rookie league. You are expected to know and follow the rules. You and your team will have a much better time and be more successful if your coaching staff is prepared and not trying to hoof it. A few tips to help…
Familiarize yourself with the rules. They are enforced in the majors. Pay particular attention to the substitution rule for this is an area where mistakes are often made.

COACHING FROM HEAVEN
Blessed Margaret of Castello
Patroness of the Handicapped and of the Pro-Life Movement
(April 13)
By Lori Hadacek , B.F.A.
In 1287 in Umbria, Italy, Lady Emilia and Lord Parisio had planned a grand celebration for the birth of their long-awaited first child. But when the baby was born, no bells were rung; no feast was given. For the baby was not the "perfect" child of which they'd dreamed. Instead, she was a homely, blind hunchback, with one leg considerably shorter than the other. Lady Emilia and Lord Parisio could find no room in their hearts for their baby, and wanted nothing to do with her. But a kindly servant girl took her and had her baptized "Margaret," which means "pearl." When she was six years old, Margaret's father led his daughter to a secluded spot in the woods and had her locked in a cell. Although she suffered terribly in that small, dank, stone prison, Margaret received the Grace to transcend her surroundings. At a tender age, she saw God's plan for her, which she revealed to a visiting priest: "Jesus was rejected even by His own people, and God is letting me be treated the same so that I can follow Our dear Lord more Closely." She endured 14 years in her cell, growing ever closer to Christ.

NSCAA Coaching Tips The Games Within the Game
Isolating smaller situations helps make 11 v. 11 more manageable.

Too often, when looking at the game of soccer, people think if terms of 11 v 11 when playing or coaching. However, the key is to find ways to isolate the game into various 1 v. 1, 2 v. 1, 2 v. 2 and 3 v. 2 situations.
Passing and Shooting Exercises
Seven drills from Success in Soccer magazine targeted to youth players in the 12- to 14-year range

These drills come from Success in Soccer magazine and are intended to work on passing and shooting skills in youth players in the 12- to 14-year range.
Overview: Young Players Ages 12 to 14
Examining the characteristics of a young player

This sidebar article from Success in Soccer magazine looks at the characteristics of young players ages 12 to 14 and the impact of those characteristics on a coach's training plan. The Effective Assistant Coach A true partner or simply a "yes-man" or a glorified "go-fer"? This is a subject that I have rarely seen addressed but which I also consider to be of extreme importance. Many teams have either assistant coaches or co-coaches who end up playing the role of cone-fetcher or, even worse, merely stands around and has no input at all.

Comfort Zone
Hesitating to push players beyond their comfort level can impede development An issue I have noticed to be a huge problem in youth soccer these days is that coaches are hesitant to push their players outside their comfort zone. It's a concept that most coaches either don't understand or don't seem concerned about, since they fail to address it in a variety of ways.
Most people know and understand the importance of eating correctly. Nutrition lacking in the essential elements to cover your Basal Metabolic Rate - the energy required to keep your body functioning, for growth and for exercise may lead to physiological and psychological consequences such as: shortness of breath, little energy, general tiredness, muscle cramps, lack of concentration and even blackouts.
Using the OOI Theory
Organize, Observe and Instruct during training sessions Recently I was speaking with a friend about the OOI theory of running a training session. The more I thought about it, the more I realized how few coaches actually use this in their training.
The Five Pillars
Using the Five Pillars in player evaluation In evaluating a soccer player, consider the five pillars of the game and see where the player ranks in each of the five categories.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GOOD COACH By Coach Gordie Gillespie
Ripon College This list of tips on coaching is by one of college baseball's legendary coaches. Coach Gordie Gillespie. The advice applies to all coaches, from summer travel teams to high school and on to college. Common sense approach to dealing with your players, staff and faculty
During his multi-faceted career, Gordie Gillespie has coached not only baseball, but also football, and men's and women's basketball. His Lewis College baseball team had back-to-back-to-back NAIA World Series titles from 1974-76 among eight total tournament appearances and a 634-241 record in 24 campaigns. Coach Gillespie had eight additional World Series appearances with the College of St. Francis. He became college baseball's all-time winningest coach in 1993, and the season ended with his club earning the school's only national sports title. Gillespie semi- retired in 1995 with an 804-488 record and currently serves as head baseball coach at Ripon College.
