Participating in this experiment are Raley's, a privately owned grocery firm with headquarters in West Sacramento, CA, and with 134 stores in California, Nevada, and New Mexico and Hess Microgen LLC of Carson City, NV, a wholly owned cogeneration subsidiary of Amerada Hess Corporation, a Fortune 200 company. Cogeneration is the use of a single energy source to generate both electrical and thermal power. Early this year, Raley's and Hess Microgen began testing an onsite cogeneration system that provides much of the energy for a Raley's Superstore in Fairfield, CA. After six months of operation and monitoring, Hess Microgen redesigned and rebuilt the system this fall in an effort to increase its efficiency. This article describes cogeneration technology, its application to grocery stores, what Hess Microgen and Raley's have learned so far from their test at the Fairfield store, and their expectations for the future of this technology.

Cogeneration = Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Generation
One of the fastest growing sources of new energy.
    What is cogeneration?
The Australian Department of the Parliament Library defines cogeneration, or CHP, as the simultaneous production of electricity and heat using a single fuel such as natural gas.
The heat produced from the electricity generating process is captured and used to produce different levels of steam. The steam can be used as a heat source for both industrial and domestic purposes.

Summary The subprogram is aimed at the generation of a scientific background and methods for the optimization of heat production sources and for the selection of technologies, considering energetic, economic and ecological aspects. Within the subprogram it is intended to take advantage of mathematical models for the optimization of heat source development, including small-capacity cogeneration heat sources. It is of particular importance to develop the models so that they will be suitable for the rehabilitation of existing heat sources and for the development of new cogeneration heat sources. The data of the already operating small capacity cogeneration heat source projects, namely the energetic, economic and ecological parameters, need to be analyzed. Within the subprogram, the research potential of the IPE, the Latvian power company “Latvenergo” and DC “Baltija” will be involved in order to coordinate research on heat supply with the general development of Latvian energetics. Information on the cogeneration system. Cogeneration involves the jointproduction (locally) of two forms of energy from the same source.
    http://www.energy.unsw.edu.au/NewsInfoUNSWCogeneration.shtml
Cogeneration at UNSW A small cogeneration system operates in the Unigym building on lower campus to principally serve the heating needs of the indoor swimming pool complex. What is cogeneration? Cogeneration involves the joint production (locally) of two forms of energy from the same source. In our case, the two forms are hot water and electricity, from a natural gas supply. This arrangement significantly increases the standard efficiency of energy transfer, leading to long-term financial savings and greenhouse gas reduction. The system comprises a 185kWe gas fuelled, spark ignition electrical generator set, located in the existing Unigym plantroom, in conjunction with a 650kW gas fired hot water generator (gas boiler). The Electrical Generator set is provided with heat recovery from the jacket water and exhaust flue gasses. The heat recovery system is then connected to the Pool Heating Water, Space Heating Water and Domestic Hot Water Systems. The system is configured to operate in cogeneration mode during times of 'Peak' and 'Shoulder' Electrical Tariffs, with the boiler operating during the 'Offpeak' Periods. At times when the thermal demand exceeds the capacity of the cogeneration plant, the hot boiler will also operate as a supplementary heater.

    • Owner: City of Klamath Falls, Ore.

    Our Hometown Power Plant
The City of Klamath Falls looked at the plant’s long-term economic benefit to the community, and welcomed it. In fact, the City of Klamath Falls owns the plant. The sale of more than $300 million in municipal revenue bonds covered the cost of development, construction and commissioning. PPM worked for the City to manage the project through construction and startup. PPM manages Klamath’s fuel supply and markets the output of the plant to Western wholesale customers in California and the Northwest. About half of the plant’s output not sold to PPM has been sold under long-term contracts to municipal and public power entities, as required by the City of Klamath Falls. Through its affiliate, Pacific Klamath Energy Inc., PPM has also contracted with the plant owner to provide plant operation and maintenance services.
    Commitment to Safety
PKE has made safety a top priority at Klamath Cogeneration Project. Plant staff have maintained a zero-lost-time accident rate since 2000 when the first employee was hired. In addition, PKE has earned consecutive Oregon OSHA SHARP Awards. This recognition by OSHA distinguishes the safety culture and track record at Klamath Cogeneration as essentially “best in class.”
