    98. ReligionLink - Court Ruling Has Been 'Good News' For School Bible Clubs
For comment, contact general counsel Julie Underwood, 703838-6722. The SupremeCourt case involved an After school Club in Milford, NY
    http://www.religionlink.org/tip_020826a.php
    Culture Government Religion Society
    AUGUST 26, 2002 EDUCATION
Court ruling has been 'Good News' for school Bible clubs
In June 2001 the U.S. Supreme Court issued a controversial decision that evangelical Christian Good News Clubs have a right to meet on public school property after school hours. Since then, the number of clubs in the United States has surged by a third, to 4,597, in all 50 states. The clubs include children ages 5 to 12, and meetings generally include Bible reading and an opportunity to make a confession of faith. More than a year after the decision, schools and parents are still challenging the clubs' right to meet in schools, most recently in Los Angeles and Chicago. The clubs continue to flourish, and courts continue to enforce the Supreme Court's ruling, to the consternation of church-state separationists who say the clubs represent a dangerous entanglement of religion and a public institution. Are there Good News Clubs in your area schools? What do parents, religious leaders and local government officials say about the clubs? Do people feel that the clubs make a difference in the lives of their children? Club meetings generally include an opportunity to make a confession of faith; how many conversions do your local clubs report? How do people of non-Christian faiths feel about the clubs? You may wish to sit in on a meeting of a local club. Why it Matters
Few issues polarize communities as much as the debate over the role of religion in public schools. And the way that the Good News Clubs have grown and expanded since the Supreme Court decision may predict the way that school voucher programs will be buoyed by the June decision in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris, which declared such programs constitutional.
