Clouds in Northeast, rain in Midwest
Satellite image of the United States taken Friday at 2 a.m. EDT. Story Tools (AP) Clouds hovered over the Northeast on Thursday and a weak cold front brought light rain and even some snow to the Midwest. Skies were partly cloudy across most of the Eastern Seaboard, lower Mid-Atlantic, Tennessee Valley, Gulf Coast and Southeast. A cold front also moved through the northern and central Plains, bringing partly cloudy to overcast skies from Kansas and Missouri north to the Dakotas and Minnesota. Light snow fell in Russell, Kansas. A ridge of high pressure brought partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies to most of the West. Scattered rain and snow fell in the mountains of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana, and isolated wind gusts hit 50 mph. Rain in Washington was heavy at times, with more than an inch in some places. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from 23 degrees in Hayward, Wisconsin, and Brookings, South Dakota, to 86 in Key West, Florida.

Noctiludent Clouds (NLC) Noctiludent Clouds (NLC) are a strange phenomena in the Mesosphere (appr. 75-90 km above ground level). It is possible to see NLCs, when the Sun is from 4 to 16 degrees below horizon. Southern Finland is very suitable area for observating NLCs. Here in Finland NLCs are most common in July and in the beginning of August. Observations: The Season 2001 is going on!! I got an NLC-alarm at 20.20 UT. At that time NLC's were up to 20 degrees in the north. Around 21.00 UT NLC's were less than 5 degrees from the horizon. This was not very spectacular display. No real observations about the end of display, as I observed Perseids and around 23.30 UT clouds covered the sky.
July 2001: (7 observations)

  • Bright NLC bands and small wave groups near the horizon (only 5 degrees above horizon) in the 40 degree sector. After 23 UT Venus and Jupiter completed this display! Due to clouds I had to drive to Janakkala, some 35 km north of Hyvinkää.

Halloween treat for East with sunny and mild weather, clouds elsewhere
Satellite image taken Friday at 10:15 p.m. EST Story Tools (AP) The eastern third of the nation Friday basked under sunny skies and mild temperatures for Halloween, while overcast and chilly weather dominated the Midwest and Plains states. The western third of the country was cold and cloudy. Midday temperatures ranged in the 70s across the South, Gulf Coast, throughout the Southeast and Tennessee Valley and mid-Atlantic states, while the Northeast, New England, Ohio Valley and Great Lakes enjoyed temperatures in the 50s and 60s. But for much of the Plains, Midwest, Missouri Valley and Ozarks, overcast and cool conditions dominated. Scattered flurries were reported across the Dakotas and Minnesota by midday. Some patchy drizzle fell across portions of Wisconsin, northern Illinois and south into Texas and Arkansas. Over the western third of the country, high pressure was responsible for partly to mostly cloudy skies. Cold and windy conditions were reported across Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Some scattered light snow sprinkled southern Wyoming, with up to 2 inches of accumulation by midday. Partly to mostly sunny skies with chilly conditions prevailed over Washington and Oregon.

Iridescent Clouds
Iridescent clouds near the Eiger
. The delicate iridescence in freshly forming cloud was captured from Kleine Scheidegg in Switzerland by ESO astronomer Alan Moorwood. When parts of clouds are thin and have similar size droplets, diffraction can make them shine with colours like a corona. In fact, the colours are essentially corona fragments. The effect is called cloud iridescence or irisation, terms derived from Iris the Greek personification of the rainbow. The usually delicate colours can be in almost random patches or bands at cloud edges. They are only organised into coronal rings when the droplet size is uniform right across the cloud. The bands and colours change or come and go as the cloud evolves. They occur most often in altocumulus, cirrocumulus and especially in lenticular clouds. Iridescence is seen mostly when part of a cloud is forming because then all the droplets have a similar history and consequently have a similar size.

Row clouds ancient library project
The new library aims to live up to the tradition of its predecessor Story Tools
ALEXANDRIA, Egypt One of the world's first and most celebrated centres of learning, the library of Alexandria, is being reopened in Egypt amid controversy. About 3,000 dignitaries from around the world are expected to attend Wednesday's opening of the "Bibliotheca Alexandrina," whose ancient roots go back more than 2,000 years, including Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, France's President Jacques Chirac and President Carlo Ciampi of Italy. But critics say valuable antiquities from the original Greek city of Alexandria were destroyed in the construction and the project amounts to an expensive gimmick which does little to improve education in a developing country of 68 million. However, Alexandrians think the library the result of a $200 million, 20-year old project backed by the U.N. cultural body UNESCO and many countries could do a lot to revive the fortunes of the city that houses one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Pharos lighthouse. Egyptian journalist Hanan Samaha explained: "People are very excited about it and everyone feels it is an asset.

Introduction:
Recently I hacked a Mario Brothers Cartridge and erased everything but the clouds. This continues work being carried out by myself and your favorite BEIGE representatives Paul Davis, Joe Beuckman, and Joe Bonn. This page is a tutorial explaining how / why the work was made. I have chosen to present my motives behind the work by adding my thoughts about the project as comments in the source code. As a programmer [not a very good one, though a programmer none the less] my thoughts and motives are most easily exemplified by my code. Also: thanks for 21c for letting post this.
Note: I am in the process of changing the code for this...because I intend to starting working on more cartridges with sound I am rewriting the code for a different assembler X11 using code by Beige's Paul Davis that we used for our Landscape Cartridge....please stay tuned.... Thank you, Cory Arcangel / BEIGE SOURCE CODE [with comments]: Below I will go through the source code line by line. The idea here is to simply write a program that will take the clouds from Mario Brothers and scroll them across the screen. Here comes the first line of code:

TITLE: CLOUDS AUTHOR: Imelda McNicholas, Our Lady of the Snow, NV GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: This combined science, English and art lesson can be taught at all grade levels particularly grades four through six. OVERVIEW: The Cloud Unit is designed not only to teach the students information about clouds, but also to encourage abstract thinking through writing and painting. The lesson facilitates the use of higher thinking skills and encourages self expression. PURPOSE: The lesson is important because when children can manipulate information, it becomes personal rather than textual, and their chances of retaining the information increase dramatically. The purpose of the Cloud Lesson is to learn about clouds, to have fun, and be creative with the information. If children can talk, write, and paint clouds, they will have a greater understanding of clouds. OBJECTIVE: To learn how clouds are formed and have fun at the same time. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: 1. Cloud Information (written below) Gateways to Science, McGraw©Hill Science, Holmes Leake Shaw; Gr.5, Ch.13, P. 202-203 2. White Typing Paper 3. Watercolors 4. Lined Paper and a Pen ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: To complete the lesson the children will first read and discuss the information about clouds. Next, they will choose what type of cloud they would like to be if they were a cloud, and write a composition about it. Lastly, they would paint their cloud and attach their composition. The essays and art projects make a great display. HOW CLOUDS ARE FORMED Clouds are masses of water droplets or ice crystals that are suspended in the air. When the droplets or crystals become too heavy to remain suspended, they fall to the Earth. In order for clouds to form, three things are needed. First, the relative humidity must be close to 100 percent. Second, tiny bits of matter, such as dust, must be present. (Water collects or condenses around these particles.) Third, something must happen to cool the air. If all three conditions exist, clouds form. The type of clouds that form depend on how cold the air is and how much water is in the air. CLOUD SHAPES Just by studying a cloud's shape, a meteorologist can tell a great deal about the cloud. There are three basic kinds of clouds. Cirrus clouds are thin, feathery clouds. They are high in the sky. They are so high that they are made up of the ice particles. They are generally white or whitish in color. Cumulus clouds look like puffs of cotton piled in a heap. They are commonly known as fair-weathered clouds. They are usually nearer the earth than cirrus clouds. Stratus clouds are low, flat clouds. They are often dark and bring rain. "Alto" means "high". Altostratus clouds are higher than stratus clouds. CLOUD COMPOSITION After the children have read and discussed the information about clouds, have them write a composition about what type of cloud they would like to be. Ask how were they formed? What they look like? Where are they located? Also, ask whether they are a friendly or mean cloud? Let the students be creative. The composition should be one page, so that the cloud painting can be attached to the bottom or top of the paper. CLOUD PAINTING After the students have neatly written a one©page composition, have them paint the cloud they described. When the painting is dry, they can attach it to the composition. Then, have the students hang their projects in the hall for display. I used the caption, "WHAT KIND OF CLOUD ARE YOU?", but any caption you choose may be used.

Clouds, rain across Northwest; calm in much of nation
Satellite image taken Monday at 7:10 p.m. EDT. (AP) Thick clouds blanketed the Pacific Northwest early Monday afternoon while light rain fell over part of Washington state. Clouds also drifted into the Northeast region and over the central and eastern Great Lakes and northern New England. Some showers fell over northern New York through northern Maine. Another disturbance moved toward eastern Montana and the upper Mississippi Valley, bringing more clouds and light rain. Conditions in Ohio and the Tennessee Valley were partly cloudy and dry. A frontal boundary along the Gulf and Southeast pulled in moisture and brought in clouds over Louisiana through the Carolinas. Showers moved across the eastern Dakotas through eastern Nebraska, lower Minnesota and Iowa and northern Missouri.
