Some believe that these cloud formations resemble UFO's and camouflage spacecraft. They do not move along as most clouds do but tend to linger in one place for hours. I do not believe they hide UFO's. Lenticular Cloud Over Hawaii November 26, 2003 - Space.com Astronomers are always looking up. Sometimes they see interesting things that aren't as far up as we normally think they're looking. Peter Michaud, a public information officer for the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii, took this picture yesterday of an unusual cloud formation above the islands. It is called a lenticular cloud, due to its lens-shaped appearance. These clouds are formed by so-called mountain waves of air created by strong winds forced over high mountains. In this case, the mountain is Mauna Kea, a 13,796-foot peak (4,260 meters) where one of the two Gemini telescopes sits, along with several other observatories. (A twin to the Hawaiian Gemini scope is situated in Chile.) "At the high points in the wave, moisture in the air condenses out to form a cloud," Michaud explained. "In the photo you can see that the wave established this morning displayed two peaks. Actually there were four two more were downstream from Mauna Loa, but the other two were not as impressive as Mauna Kea's!"

107. The Clouds
An introduction to the play by Aristophanes.
http://www.theatredatabase.com/ancient/aristophanes_006.html
Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us THE CLOUDS an introduction to the play by Aristophanes T HE satire in The Clouds The Acharnians The play was produced at the Great Dionysia in 423 B.C., but proved unsuccessful, Cratinus and Amipsias being awarded first and second prize. This is said to have been due to the intrigues and influence of Alcibiades, who resented the caricature of himself presented in the sporting Phidippides. A second edition of the drama was apparently produced some years later, to which the 'Parabasis' of the play as we possess it must belong, as it refers to events subsequent to the date named. This article is reprinted from Aristophanes: The Eleven Comedies . Trans. Anonymous. London: The Athenian Society, 1922. RELATED WEBSITES

The Plymouth State Meteorology Program has developed this server to provide explanations of and access to detailed pictures of some basic cloud forms. The cloud images are relatively large (640x480) in order to show detailed structure and features. All of these pictures were taken in the local area around Plymouth, New Hampshire and most from the weather observation deck on the roof of the Boyd Science Center on the Plymouth State campus. Clouds can move and change shape quickly as indicated in this 30 minute time-lapse mpeg video loop . The purpose of this "boutique" is to provide a general cloud reference and is not intended to provide an all-inclusive list. Images will be added to or changed as opportunities permit.
    Cloud Classification
Clouds are generally classified based on characteristics, such as, altitude, appearance, or origin. Altitude distinctions apply to those clouds that fit in various layers of the atmosphere as follows:
    • high clouds - have bases above 18,000 feet

    Mammatus
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Mammatus clouds in Tulsa, Oklahoma Mammatus (also known as mamma or mammatocumulus ) is a meteorological term applied to a cellular pattern of pouches hanging underneath the base of a cloud . These pouches, typically measuring about half a kilometer in diameter, are often ragged, but may appear smooth. Their color is normally a bluish gray, the same as that of the host cloud, but direct illumination from the setting sun and other clouds may cause a gold or reddish cast. Mammatus can persist anywhere from minutes to hours, diffusing and disappearing over time. The mechanism of their production is poorly understood and has been little studied. The presence of very dry air beneath the cloud base is known to be a factor. Mammatus has often been linked with the occurrence of tornadoes , particularly during the 1950s and 1960s. Though tornadic storms often produce mammatus under their downwind anvil, many weak storms and even stratiform clouds also produce mammatus. Contrary to common misconceptions, mammatus are not precursors to tornadoes, but are a possible byproduct edit
