About Us Contacts Help ... Feedback SEARCH Global Australia NSW Vic. ... Registered User Services Of all weather phenomena, clouds are among the most fascinating. From the silky filaments ot high altitude cirrusto the towering, threatening mass of storm-bearing cumulonimbus, clouds are as varied as the weather itself. Apart from their beauty and interest, clouds can provide a useful indication of weather conditions, and weather observers at some 500 locations around Australia send regular reports to Bureau of Meteorology forecasting Offices on cloud types, height, and the amount of sky covered.
Clouds have their origins in the water that covers 70 per cent of the earth's surface. Millions of tons of water vapour are evaporated into the air daily from oceans, lakes and rivers, and by transpiration from trees, crops and other plant life. As this moist air rises it encounters lower pressures, expands as a result, and in doing so becomes cooler. As the air cools it can hold less water vapour and eventually will become saturated. It is from this point that some of the water vapour will condense into tiny water droplets to form cloud (about one million cloud droplets are contained in one rain-drop). Thus, whenever clouds appear they provide visual evidence of the presence of water in the atmosphere. There are four ways in which moist air can be lifted to form cloud. They are:

Climbing the clouds to Sikkim
Steep slopes and storybook towns and temples that cling to craggy cliffs shrouded by mist makes Sikkim another of those mythical Shangri-la high in the Himalayas. Long on the list of travelers targeting the far corners of the planet, the ancient kingdom of Sikkim is opening up to tourism
By Ron Gluckman /Sikkim W E'RE SCALING SHEER RIDGES ABOVE THE TIBETAN PLATEAU, darting in and out of clouds to marvel at breathtaking Himalayan views. That is, when we dare look up from a succession of hairpin switchbacks, each steeper and sharper than the last, all with dizzying drops down both sides of the razor-thin mountain track. The northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, wedged in between Bhutan, Tibet and Nepal, may be the most vertical place on the planet. Landslides plague Sikkim's precarious roads, and that means slow going for traffic - when there is traffic. My traveling companion and I had already spent hours on a deserted roadside - we had come upcountry for the night and had no choice but to try and hitchhike onwards the next morning - when a road engineer stopped his jeep to pick us up.
For the next hour, we bump and wiggle, snaking no more 12 kilometers. Suddenly, at a sharp bend, we come to a halt at the sound of chanting. For kilometers the countryside has shown no sign of habitation, but here, on a grassy ledge at the edge of a vast gorge, a

From the first, came the King of Pagan, Pyusawati. From the second, the Emperor of China. Out of the last egg, all the Rubies. Mogok Stone Tract is well known as a source of excellent rubies and sapphires, among other stones. Some believed this mountainous area to be the mythological "Valley of the Serpents" where large, clear gems lay in a deep and inaccessible ravine. The only way to get these fine gems was to throw lamb carcasses down to its floor, let the vultures and the serpents battle over them and then pick up the meat, which would then have the gems stuck to it. Red Stones, the "Flesh and Blood of Mother Earth", are unusually common in this area (700 kilometers north of Rangoon) where a range of high hills and deep valleys form a natural border with the Shan Plateau. The Kyatpyin, Kathe and Luda Valleys enclose the major mining areas. The reputation of these areas as a source of fine gems was well documented in many of the reports written by early travelers and missionaries. One Nicolo Di Conti, who visited the kingdom of Ava, had described its King riding on his white elephant adorned with golden necklaces set with sparkling gemstones (1419-44). Later on, in 1568, an Englishman named Ralph Fitch gave the following description: "Capalan (Kyapyin) is the place where they find the rubies, sapphires, and spinels. It standeth six days journey from Ava into the kingdom of Pegu. There are many great high hilles out of which they digge them. None may go to the pits but only those which digge them" (1586, in Hakluyat).

Basic Cloud Types:
Cumulus Stratus Cirrus Cumulonimbus
Word Up Cumulus: In Latin, this means "heap." Cumulus clouds look like a heap of cotton balls or whipped cream.
Stratus: It's Latin for "covering" or "blanket." Stratus clouds look like a flat blanket in the sky.
Cirrus: It's Latin for "curl." Cirrus clouds look like curls of white hair.
You have only to look up into the sky to try your luck at weather forecasting. Clouds give us a clue about what is going on in our atmosphere and how the weather might change in the hours or even days to come. Each type of cloud forms in a different way, and each brings its own kind of weather. Cool Condensation Clouds are water. As you probably know, we can find water in three forms: liquid, solid and gas. Water as a gas is called water vapor. Clouds form when water vapor turns back into liquid water droplets. That is called condensation.

The Topic:
Clouds Easier - Clouds are large white or gray objects in the sky. Clouds are a collection of very small drops of water or tiny pieces of ice that are held in the air. Harder - A cloud is a mass of small water droplets or tiny ice crystals that float in the air. Clouds are formed of water that has evaporated from rivers, lakes, oceans, or moist soil and plants. Some clouds are white and fleecy; others are dull gray or black sheets that darken the ground beneath them. Most clouds continually move and change shape. Clouds change as parts evaporate in dryer air or they are moved and reshaped by wind and air currents. Clouds are an important part of earth's weather. Clouds carry water that falls to the earth's surface as rain and snow to then support all forms of life. Clouds can sometimes bring destruction in the form of hail or tornadoes.

Clouds
Making realistic clouds is a lot easier than you might think at first. You might try putting a texture-mapped dome over the whole scene, but the perspective will be off when you move the camera. You might also try modelling individual clouds, but that would take up a big amount of memory. The best way I've found uses only one polygon with the following properites:
  • dimensions: 1 million meters by 1 million meters, square.
    1000 meters up, facing down.
  • color = 200 200 200
  • color texture: fractal noise, value = 100 100 100
    size = 2000 2000 2000, frequencies 3, contrast 1
  • luminosity = 100%
  • diffuse = 0% (any lights wouldn't affect clouds)
  • specular, reflectivity = 0%
  • transparency = 20%
  • transparency texture: fractal noise, value = 100%
    size = 1000 1000 1000, frequencies 5, contrast 2
Although the Earth isn't flat, it's so absolutely huge that it might as well be when you're sitting right on it. The big flat polygon is so big that it stretches almost to the horizon. It's less than a pixel away from the horizon, though, so it looks fine! Best of all, when you move the camera, the perspective stays exactly the same. Here's an overhead view of the cloud texture:
If you're blessed with a newer version of Lightwave, you can have this:
