Davis Sun-Sentinel Posted August 8 2001 Behind one plan to replicate humans is a small, sci-fi-tinged religion that preaches UFOs and promises eternal life through cloning. Brigitte Boisselier was among the three scientists who startled the National Academy of Sciences this week by predicting that a human being would soon be genetically duplicated. Besides her two degrees in chemistry, Boisselier is a bishop of the Raelian movement, which teaches that humans were created by extraterrestrials called Elohim. She was one of three researchers who spoke Tuesday at a symposium sponsored by the academy in Washington, D.C., which also heard other scientists voice angry warnings on human cloning. Founded by a French race car driver who goes by the single name of Rael, Boisselier’s UFO-based faith seemed out of place at a scientific gathering.

Cloning
by Rosa Beddington
Since our genes dictate to a large extent what we look like, how we behave and what we can and cannot do, having identical genes, as identical twins do, ensures something more than mere similarity. Novelists and film makers have not been slow to exploit the imagery afforded by cloning. Limitless numbers of identical beings manufactured from existing or previous generations has obvious dramatic potential, although seldom of a reassuring nature. Clones traverse the cinema screen as crowds of dehumanised humans destined for monotonous drudgery, as invincible armies of lookalikes from outer space, as replicas of living megalomaniacs and, in the ultimate fantasy, as the resurrected dead - troupes of little Hitlers and herds of rampaging dinosaurs. Of course, this is science fiction. Nonetheless there is just a whiff of plausibility, a whisker of scientific credibility; enough to plant an indelible vision of what might be, or even what could be. a priori unnatural about cloning.

On the path to cloning?
by Jeffrey P. Kahn, Ph.D., M.P.H. Director, Center for Bioethics University of Minnesota Cloning is making its way back into the news, with announcements by a Massachusetts biotechnology company, Advanced Cell Technology. ACT claims it has created "normal" cows through cloning and is making public the results of its successful human embryo cloning effort and the "recipe" for creating cloned embryos. The company says it created the clones for research into how it might produce stem cells for therapeutic purposes, and has no intention of allowing any of the embryos to be implanted into a woman's womb to create a pregnancy. But the announcement of a successfully cloned human embryo, even for research purposes, rekindles the fear that cloning identical copies of humans cannot be far off. The technical reality is still a distant prospect but the successful cloning of embryos is another step along the path. What are the appropriate limits on stem cell research and the application of cloning technologies?
Therapeutic versus reproductive cloning
ACT's research focuses on so-called therapeutic cloning, where a cloned embryo is made using the DNA of a patient who could benefit from a stem cell transplant. The cloned embryo would then be allowed to divide only a few times, after which the embryonic stem cells would be collected and used to grow genetically-matched tissues or specific cell types needed to treat the same patient.

Online reaction to human cloning research
Human cloning is an issue with vital medical, ethical and religious implications, and not surprisingly, it has resulted in passionate debate between proponents, opponents and the undecided. The following quotes are a sampling of opinions posted by members of the CNN Community about research into human cloning. They illustrate arguments from all sides of the issue, but may not be representative of public opinion at large.
From the message boards
To all of you worried about cloning messing with nature: Man has been using cloning (albeit on plants) since the dawn of agriculture. Without cloning and genetic engineering, there is no way that the human race would have been able to grow to its current size there just wouldn't be enough food. D.F.

    State Human Cloning Laws
Updated June 21, 2005 Fourteen states have laws pertaining to human cloning. The issue was first addressed by California legislature, which banned reproductive cloning, or cloning to initiate a pregnancy, in 1997. Since then, nine other states, including Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia have enacted measures to prohibit reproductive cloning. Arizona and Missouri have measures that address the use of public funds for cloning. Louisiana also enacted legislation that prohibited reproductive cloning, but the law expired in July 2003. Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and South Dakota laws extend their prohibitions to therapeutic cloning, or cloning for research purposes. Virginia's law also may ban human cloning for any purpose, but it may be open to varying interpretations because the law does not define the term "human being," which is used in the definition of human cloning. Rhode Island law does not prohibit cloning for research, and California and New Jersey human cloning laws specifically permit cloning for the purpose of research. For a discussion of issues related to cloning in further detail, please see NCSL's magazine article on human cloning "

Elizabeth Cohen: Congressional hearings on human cloning
Elizabeth Cohen is a medical correspondent for CNN's Health and Medical Unit. Q: Why hasn't Congress taken up the issue of banning human cloning earlier? Cohen: They have taken up the issue before. There have been calls for banning of human cloning ever since Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997. It hasn't gone anywhere in the last four years, however, but now there are two groups that say they are ready to start cloning in fact, one group may have already started the Congress is feeling more pressure to actually come up with a ban. ALSO U.S. lawmakers debate limits on human cloning Q: How close are these groups to succeeding? Cohen: One of the groups, they call themselves the Raelians, told Congress in March that they were ready to start a human pregnancy that would lead to a human clone in April, two months ago. So it is possible there is a surrogate mother walking around, two months pregnant with the world's first human clone, but it's impossible to know if this group is serious. They won't tell us if they have a pregnancy, and said they were not going to tell the media anything until they have a healthy human baby clone. Some people think that the science of this group, the Raelians, isn't really serious. This group thinks that human beings were really created by alien scientists. Other people say that the science behind cloning isn't really all that complicated, it's pretty much the same as you would have done for Dolly, cows or mice, and if you could do it in animals you could do it in humans.

    Cloning pigs for parts
by Jeffrey P. Kahn, Ph.D., M.P.H. Director, Center for Bioethics University of Minnesota The same biotechnology company that brought us Dolly the sheep, along with one of its competitors, announced it has now successfully cloned genetically modified pigs. What’s special about these pigs is that they have certain of their genes shut off or “knocked out,” which the companies hope could eventually lead to growing animals whose organs can be transplanted into humans. This could be a major medical advance that would change the way we think about organ transplantation. We might move from the current situation of severe shortage and patients dying long before organs become available, to a time when organ transplant could be treated like other surgeries. But transplanting animal organs into humans – known as xenotransplantation raises its own issues. How safe will organs from animals be for humans? Is it acceptable to engineer and grow animals so that their organs can be used for human transplants? And if everyone who needed a transplant was to receive one, what impact would that have on our health care systems?
