The Cloning of Dolly
Dr Jamie Love I've decided to make cloning one of the first topics in this first issue of Science Explained because the folks who created Dolly are acquaintances of mine. (Yes, I am a name dropper, aren't I?) A few kilometers from my home lives Dolly, the world's first mammalian clone; not counting identical twins. (They're clones too.)
What makes Dolly different from identical twins is that she was grown from a cell taken from an ADULT animal! Many bright, well-respected scientists said it couldn't be done. Dr Ian Wilmut, who is in charge of the lab that created Dolly, admits that he had his doubts. However the hard work and imaginative thinking of his staff made it all possible. How did they do it and what did they do? First some background to teach you the basics of developmental biology
An oocyte (pronounced "oh-oh-sight") is an unfertilized egg and it has no chance of developing into an animal unless it's fertilized. A recently fertilized egg is called a zygote (pronounced "zye-goat"). Funny how the last two letters in the alphabet describe the first stage of an individual animal. For example, a frog zygote normally divides and grows into a complete animal, a tadpole. Later that tadpole will develop into an adult frog.

    Using it
    1. What is it?
g4u ("ghost for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM that allows easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number of PCs using FTP. The floppy/CD offers two functions. The first is to upload the compressed image of a local harddisk to a FTP server, the other is to restore that image via FTP, uncompress it and write it back to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the harddisk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also supported. For the curious, I've added a few screenshots:
    • Booting g4u in bochs
    • Device detection
    • Welcome to g4u!
    • Some random g4u commands ...
    • Restoring with slurpdisk
    2. Why not one of the alternatives?
    • Server-part often runs (only) under DOS/Windows. I wanted to use a Unix based server.
    • Supported filesystems include everything from Microsoft, but others are not handled properly (Solaris/x86, NetBSD, ...)

  • A group of genetically identical individuals descended from the same parent by asexual reproduction. Many plants show this by producing suckers, tubers or bulbs to colonise the area around the parent.

Prometheus Bound
Cloning Bears Identical Reactions
by Fred L. Smith Jr. Fred L. Smith Jr. ispresident of the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. T he ink had barely dried on the clever headline on the Scottish sheep cloning story, "Hello Hello, Dolly, Dolly!" before politicians were calling for bans. President Clinton was first to express "serious concern." Repre-sentative Vernon Ehlers (R-Mich.), a physicist by training, echoed his sentiments. He reasoned that to prevent horrible regulation, we should impose bad regulation. The response to cloning was predictable and indicative of the troubled political history of biotechnology. The discovery of the double helix structure of DNA and later, the ability to recombine DNA, made many uneasy. Technophobe Jeremy Rifkin described biotechnology as "a form of annihilation every bit as deadly as nuclear holocaust, and even more profound." Repetition of the "mistake" of unleashing nuclear power had to be avoided. Scientists could no longer allow others to decide how to use new and potentially destructive discoveries. They assumed the role Olympians, deciding whether the technology would be released or suppressed. Thus in the early 1970s, James Watson, co-discoverer of the DNA double helix, and several microbiologists urged a moratorium on further research until the dangers of gene-splicing could be assessed. At a meeting in Pacific Grove, California in 1975, scientists urged the National Institutes of Health to impose guidelines governing DNA experiments.
