Ree Payne I was born in North Carolina. I have been married to my husband Ed for over 45 years. We have 3 daughters, 3 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. At the present time our oldest daughter and our 2 granddaughters dance with our club. The Wildwood Cloggers The Mile-Hi Clogging Club The Wildwood Cloggers are an exhibition clogging team. They perform at many festivals, private engagements and retirement homes. The Wildwood Cloggers do team routines(with contra and square dance movements) and line dances. This team practices on Sunday nights after the Mile-Hi Clogging Club dance. The Mile-Hi Clogging Club is a for fun club. They meet every Sunday from 6-8pm. This club dances all levels from easy to advanced. New steps and routines are taught almost weekly. There is no need for a partner in this club as most of the dances learned here are line dances. Lessons I teach beginning and intermediate lessons on Sunday Nights from 4:30-6:00pm. You do not need special shoes for the lessons. Just wear comfortable flat bottomed shoes.

What is Clogging and Where Did It Come From? Clogging is a folk dance of the Appalachians. The dance dates back over four hundred years and was brought to America by immigrants. Everybody who has studied the dance generally agree it came to America through our English ancestry. But the English weren’t the only people who had a folk dance that could be called clogging. The Dutch had a much older dance of this variety. The Scotch, Irish, Germans and Italians also had a step dance that could be identified as clogging. The history of the dance is difficult to trace. It is a folk dance, and like a folk song, it was never written down but passed from generation to generation. Clogging is an important part of our American Heritage and has existed in the Appalachian Region since the original settlers arrived and has always been associated with Appalachian Square Dancing, hoe-downs and Big Circle Mountain Dances. Now clogging is popular everywhere and has spread from the Appalachian Mountains all over the country. Some of the best in the nation are here at our Festival and the competition is sanctioned by America’s Clogging Hall of Fame.

Director Linda Carolan writes: Clogging is a pastime that carries the mind and feet back in time to the days of our forefathers. Fire-on-the-Mountain performs to bluegrass music. Both clogging and bluegrass are art forms that developed from traditional folk music and dance in the Appalachian mountains There are many versions of the history of clog dancing in the United States. Clogging is generally thought to be a combination of the various native dances that settlers to the Appalachian region brought with them. As the different cultural groups mingled and combined so did their dances, until what we now know as clogging was formed. One of the contributing cultures was the Cherokee people, who lived in the Appalachian area when European settlers arrrived. Dancing was very much a part of their culture, and they would beat the drum and make music for various ceremonial dances such as the hunting dance or rain dance. European settlers brought their own dances, including the Lancaster Clog Dance from England (which at least gave the dance its name). The polka step, from Czech and German origins, is the basic rhythm for clogging. The most influential of the European cultures is that of the Irish, with the Hard Shoe dances that bear a striking resemblance to clogging. The other most important influence were the dances of the African-Americans who were brought to the region.
