Welcome to the Wolfpack Clogging Team Homepage. As you might have guessed from that statement, we're a student organization at North Carolina State University We would like to thank and wish best of luck to all of the very talented participants in our fall 2005 auditions. The Wolfpack Clogging Team began in 1989 under the direction of Marsha Lester. The first team performance was in December of that year at a women's basketball game at NCSU. The primary focus grew for the team to promote and preserve the folk art and tradition of Clogging through performance, service and competition. With over 250 state, national and international performances, the team has had the opportunity to share the joy, fun and excitement of dance with all ages and nationalities. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday and Thursday between 5:30 and 7:30 PM. These rehearsals are held at Carmichael Gym in the dance studio (RM 2307) during the fall and spring semesters. Auditions are held in the spring and fall. Students interested in joining the team are encouraged to take the introductory clogging class (PE 233), regardless of skill level, so that they become used to the team's style of clogging. ABOUT CLOGGING... ...a fun and addictive folk dance! Clogging is a type of dance that claims many origins, but it continues to be a source of fun and a chance to socialize for our members and many cloggers throughout the world. Our team traditions originated in the Appalachian mountains from people just getting together and dancing for hours on end with each other and as competition with other individuals. The dance form combines solo clogging footwork and square dancing, each with totally separate origins. The clogging itself is characterized by the footwork - often done in leather-soled shoes and, in many places, with one of many types of metal or wood taps on the balls, heels, or both. In traditional dances, a lot of the old square dance figures are done, except usually in a circle and with a different style unlike the square dance form. Although the dance form known as "clogging" has many different definitions within the US, the origin of Southern Appalachian Traditional clogging is basically the culture mentioned in its namesake. Today, we have "precision" clogging with specific steps done in certain sequences. However, traditional "freestyle" clogging still exists in the form of individual as well as group dances. NCSU offers a beginning clogging class as an elective PE class (PE 233). It is very fun, and it is where some of the team members got started, too!

ACA General - What is Clogging? Clogging (or Appalachian Mountain Folk Dance) is an American folk dance that has its origins in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of the United States of America. While it has strong ties to the step dances of the British Isles brought to the region by white settlers, clogging is also influenced by the traditional dance of Native Americans, and the traditional solo dances of African Americans. Clogging is a misnomer, since it is not performed in clogs, although some of the original step dances from Europe were. Nevertheless, the name persists, although in Appalachia, this form of percussive dance is often only known as buck dancing or flatfooting or just "dancing". In the United States, clogging takes two major forms: traditional Appalachian flatfoot dance and precision (or modern) clogging. Appalachian clogging can still be found in western North Carolina, West Virgina, southwestern Virginia, and other places in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Interest in Appalachian dance was significantly revived in the late 1970's by the Green Grass Cloggers. Cloggers in this style dance to live music; either the string band music of the southern Appalachian Mountains (featuring fiddle, banjo and guitar) or to bluegrass music. Some keep their feet barely on the floor, heels and toes thumping with dizzying speed, torsos virtually motionless. Others skip and stomp, or slap their thighs. It’s not important what you do, just that you keep time,” says Jane George, who spent decades teaching clogging and other mountain dance in rural schools. Clogging and its kin are becoming more popular because of standardized steps and increasing interest in southern Appalachian heritage. The dances are no longer relegated to barns and back porches. Millions watched a North Carolina clogging group kick and click at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The Irish group Riverdance, with its modern version of the jig that inspired American clogging, earned a Grammy and a spot on this year’s Academy Awards program. Rep. Bob Wise, D-W.Va., clogged his way to Capitol Hill. Wise is often called “The Clogging Congressman” for dancing through campaign events and small-town parades.

What Is Clogging? Clogging is an art form and very much a part of our heritage, It began in the Appalachian Mountains brought to America by Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch Germans who settled there in the mid 1700s. Our Native Americans, African Americans as well as today’s Canadian, tap and jazz dance influences have influenced it. The word "clog" means "time" in Gaelic. Clogging is danced keeping time with the downbeat. Many people think clogging is a dance performed in wooden shoes. English dancers do wear wooden clogs with leather uppers. Irish dancers do wear leather-soled shoes (the Hard shoes now sporting fiberglass tips and hollow heels) and cloggers wear taps. Cloggers did not wear double taps until the 1940s. Tap shoes have a single tap attached to the toe and heel. Clogging taps have another piece rivoted to that piece, therefore considered "double taps" and make more of a "jingle" sound. Clogging is one of the few dances considered a sport, forming teams and competing in area, state and national events. In the Ozarks we relate clogging to jigging and hoedowning. Some may call it flat footing or buck dancing.
