atomic clocks
Introduction
The first atomic clock, Caesium I, was designed by Louis Essen and built at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington in 1955. Although it was not the first machine to use atoms for timekeeping, it was the first to keep time better than the best pendulum or quartz clocks. enlarge Louis Essen and Jack Parry using Caesium I It was also the first clock whose timekeeping was significantly more constant than the rotation of the Earth. Modern atomic clocks are even more accurate than Caesium I and time is now defined in terms of atoms rather than the Earth's motion. All mechanical clocks work by counting the vibrations of something which has a constant frequency such as a pendulum. Unfortunately, the frequency of a pendulum is not perfectly constant. It is affected by changes in temperature, air pressure and the strength of gravity. This causes the clock to run too quickly or too slowly. The frequencies measured by atomic clocks are much higher than those of a pendulum but vary much less, so atomic clocks keep time much better. Caesium I was so accurate that it would only gain or lose one second in three hundred years. Modern atomic clocks are even more accurate. It is difficult to imagine that we need to measure time so accurately but it is essential for many aspects of modern life which we take for granted. Modern navigation systems, mobile telephones, digital television and many industrial and commercial activities need this level of accuracy.

Ancient Calendars
Historically we have been able to gather only a little knowledge about the methods of time keeping in prehistoric eras, but we do know that in practically every culture just as today, people have been preoccupied with measuring and recording the passage of time. The celestial bodies of the Sun, Moon, Planets and Stars, have allowed ancient civilisations to create systems to provide a measuring of seasons, months, and years. In Europe we have discovered archaeological finds which indicate that over 20,000 years ago scratched lines on sticks and bones, or carefully gouged holes were used as ancient calendars, believed by academics to demonstrate ways of indicating the days between phases of the moon, 'lunar cycles'. Around five thousand years ago, the ancient Sumerians, in the Tigris-Euphrates valley (now in Iraq), had a highly developed system :
  • each year was divided into months;

The first real means of telling time with clocks appear to have been devised by the They used sundials or shadow clocks to measure the time of day.
http://www.crystalinks.com/clocks.html
The earliest measurements of time date back over 10,000 years. One of the key drivers of inventing methods of keeping track of time were the farmers needs to determine the best time to plant. Archaeologists have discovered bones with inscriptions that are believed to have been used to track lunar cycles. The first real means of telling time with clocks appear to have been devised by the Egyptians. By 2100 BC, they had invented a means to divide the day into 24 hours. They used sundials or shadow clocks to measure the time of day. The Sundial indicates the time of day by the positioning of the shadow of some object on which the sun's rays fall. The shadow clock consists of a straight base with a raised crosspiece at one end. A scale with time divisions is inscribed on the base. The clock is set east-west and is reversed at midday. Sundials were another early method for marking time. One of the first ancient people to use sundials were the Sumerians. They divided the day into 12 parts and each part was about 2 hours long. They measured the length of shadows to determine how much time had passed. No one is really sure why the Sumerians kept track of time; maybe it was for religious purposes. Sundials were dependent on the weather; it would be useless on a cloudy day and the winter and summer shadows would not correspond with the markings. In order for the sundial to work correctly, it had to be positioned correctly. The Egyptians also divided the day into 12 parts as well. They used huge granite columns called Cleopatra Needles to keep track of time periods. They had 12 marks on the ground that equalled 12 parts of the day. When the sun touched the top, a shadow was created and the length and position of the shadow told the Egyptians how much daylight remained. They invented a portable piece called a sundial. It contains 3 parts: a circular dial, a needle and a style (gnomon) to keep the needle in place. Cleopatra's needles were inconvient and impractical for the average person.

http://www.arcytech.org/java/clock/clock_history.html
The History of Clocks The history of clocks is very long, and there have been many different types of clocks over the centuries. Not all historians agree on the history of the clock. The word clock was first used in the 14th century (about 700 years ago). It comes from the word for bell in Latin ("clocca"). Using the Sun The first way that people could tell the time was by looking at the sun as it crossed the sky. When the sun was directly overhead in the sky, it was the middle of the day, or noon. When the sun was close to the horizon, it was either early morning (sunrise) or early evening (sunset). Telling the time was not very accurate. Sundial Clocks The oldest type of clock is a sundial clock, also called a sun clock. They were first used around 3,500 B.C. (about 5,500 years ago). Sundials use the sun to tell the time. The shadow of the sun points to a number on a circular disk that shows you the time. In the big picture below on the right, the shadow created by the sun points to 9, so it is nine o'clock. Since sundials depend on the sun, they can only be used to tell the time during the day.
