Small Area; Short Distances
Israel's area within boundaries and ceasefire lines, including the areas under Palestinian self-government, is 10,840 square miles (27,800 sq.km.). Long and narrow in shape, it is some 290 miles (470 km.) in length and about 85 miles (135 km.) across at the widest point. The country is bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Mountains and plains, fertile land and desert are often minutes apart. The width of the country, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east, can be crossed by car in about 90 minutes; and the trip from Metulla, in the far north, to Eilat at the country's southern tip takes about six hours.
Geographical Features
Israel may be divided into four geographical regions: three parallel strips running north to south and a large, mostly arid zone in the southern half.

Geography and Climate
Located in the northwest corner of the South American continent, Colombia encompasses an area of more than 1.1 million square kilometers. It is the only country in South America with both Caribbean (1,760 kilometers) and Pacific coastlines (1,448 kilometers). Colombia also has international borders with five Latin American nations: Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador (see fig. 2). There were no major outstanding international boundary problems between Colombia and its neighbors in the late 1980s. All of the borders had long been delineated, and most had been demarcated by surveys and the placement of markers, although tropical jungle terrain and hostile Indians had impeded survey operations in some areas along the borders with Venezuela and Brazil. Colombia and Venezuela did, however, dispute sovereignty over the seabed in the Golfo de Venezuela, an area of potential petroleum wealth (see Relations with Latin America , ch. 4).

More Information c Population In 2004 Hawaii’s population was 1,262,840 and was very diverse, with no single ethnic group forming a majority. The original island inhabitants are thought to be Polynesian, or Pacific Islanders, who may have arrived as early as ad 750. Beginning in the mid-1800s, immigrants from China, Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Samoa, and other Pacific islands moved to Hawaii in response to U.S. sugar planters’ need for inexpensive labor. According to the 2000 census, people of Asian ancestry make up 41.6 percent of Hawaii’s permanent population. In recent years, a large influx of whites has added to the rich and complex “melting pot” found in the Hawaiian region. During the 1980s, Hawaii’s population grew by 23 percent, with the majority of this growth occurring in the city of Honolulu, located on the central island of Oahu.

[Text Version] Lesson 2 - Southwest Asia and North Africa - The Region SCoPE Site Lesson Plan Title: Abstract The purpose of this lesson is to identify two characteristics that make Southwest Asia and North Africa a region and where and why people live within the region. The first characteristic is the dry climate across almost all the region. Overall, the region receives sparse precipitation and has high temperatures during much of the year. Mediterranean, steppe, arid, and mountain climatic conditions characterize the region, but aridity is dominant. The second characteristic of the region is the dominant cultural role of Islam as the major religion. The concept of a region based on a single, dominant religion is developed and then studied further in Lesson 3. Benchmark Explain why people live and work as they do in Southwest Asia and North Africa (II.1.MS.3). You can get to Türkiye by air, rail, road or sea. Most international flights arrive at Istanbul's "Atatürk Airport", the country's largest and busiest with a big new terminal. Most foreign visitors arrive in Istanbul because it has the most flights and is also the first place tourists want to see. Izmir has its shiny new "Menderes Airport" south of the city on the road to Ephesus. Antalya and Dalaman receive mostly charter flights filled with vacationers headed for the south coast. Turkish Airlines ("Türk Hava Yollari"), flight symbol TK has flights to New York, Singapore, most major cities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Türkiye is big: the distance by road from Edirne on the Bulgarian border to Kars on the Russian one is over 1,700 km. From the Black Sea shore to the Mediterranean is almost 1,000 km. Geography Defined - Eclectic Synthesizing Dynamic "The subject which describes the earth's surface - its physical features, climates, vegetation, soils, products, peoples, etc., and their distribution. For its data it has drawn extensively on specialized sciences, such as geology, meteorology, astronomy, anthropology, and biology." W. G. Moore, 1963. "In geography, the subject of investigation and presentation is the areal differentiation of the face of the earth. Geography focuses on the similarities and differences among areas, on the interconnections and movements between areas, and on the order at or near the earth's surface." Derwert Whittlesey, 1954. II. Region Defined "Any segment of the earth's surface is a region if it is homogeneous in...' terms of some criteria. 'Its homogeneity is determined by criteria formulated for the purpose of sorting from the whole range of earth phenomena the items required to express or illuminate a particular grouping... So defined, a region is not an object, either self-determined or nature-given. It is an intellectual concept, an entity for the purpose of thought, created by the selection of certain features that are relevant to an areal interest or problem and by the disregard of all features that are considered to be irrelevant."

The main islands (sometimes referred to as the Home Islands), running from north to south, are Hokkaido, Honshu (or the mainland), Shikoku, and Kyushu. Naha on Okinawa in the Ryukyu archipelago is over 600 km to the southwest of Kyushu. In addition, about 3,000 smaller islands may be counted in the full extent of the archipelago that comprises greater Japan.

Japan is the 16th most densly populated country in the world List of countries by population density. However since about 73% of the country is mountainous, with a chain running through each of the main islands, flat land is limited. The population density is exacerbated by a traditional Shinto belief that the hills were for the gods, and hence there is very little agricultural or architectural development on Japan's mountains. Another reason for the lack of development on japan's mountains is due to earthquakes which frequentlly cause landslides on japan's hills. Japan is situated in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Frequent low intensity earth tremors and occasional volcanic activity are felt throughout the islands. Destructive earthquakes, often resulting in tsunamis, occur several times a century. The most recent major quakes include the 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake and the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Hot springs are numerous and have been developed as resorts.

Overview Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres in the centre of the South-East Asian peninsula. It is bordered by Myanmar (Burma), Lao People's Democratic Republic, Cambodia and Malaysia, and has 2,420 kilometres of coast line on the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman sea. Thailand stretches 1,650 kilometres from north to south, and from east to west 780 kilometres at its widest point.
For economic, social and ecological reasons, Thailand is usually classified into four geographical regions. They are: the central region (including Bangkok Metropolitan Region) comprising the basin of the Chao Phrya River which runs from north to south and after crossing Bangkok flows to the Gulf of Thailand. The central region is often called the "rice bowl" of Thailand being the most fertile area of the country. After the Bangkok Metropolitan Region, it enjoys the highest per capita income in the country.
The northern region is mountainous and was traditionally the most heavily forested area of the country. In the recent years, however, overcutting has considerably reduced its forest resources. The main centres of population are in the narrow alluvial valleys along the four north-south flowing rivers which unite in the northern central plain to form the Chao Phraya.
