When the Weather is Uggianaqtuq: Inuit Observations of Environmental Change
Summary
Uggianaqtuq (pronounced OOG-gi-a-nak-took ) is a North Baffin Inuktitut word that means to behave unexpectedly, or in an unfamiliar way. From the perspective of many hunters and elders in the Arctic, the weather has been uggianaqtuq in recent years. In this interactive, multi-media CD-ROM, Inuit from two communities in Nunavut, Canada (Baker Lake and Clyde River), share their observations and perspectives on recent environmental changes. The CD-ROM is a pilot project that uses media technology, as opposed to written reports, as an alternative way to document and communicate Inuit observations and knowledge. It is a research product/report for the communities involved, as well as others interested in how Inuit are experiencing environmental change. Maps, text, photos, video and music are integrated to help illustrate the changes Inuit have observed in their environment and the impacts on their livelihoods. The integrated components allow the user to
  • search by topic or the person being interviewed view interview clips in Inuktitut with English interpretations view and print maps about environmental changes drawn by participants view short videos with scenes from the communities view summaries and photos of environmental changes and their impacts to the landscape and community life.

About.com's Geography Page
Well-organized site maintained by a California State University graduate student includes 30 sub-categories covering a wide range of topics in physical and human geography.
ArcData Online: GIS Data on the Web (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.)
This site, hosted by a major producer of geographic information system (GIS) software, allows you to create a number of dynamic map images with data stored on its server. You can also conduct searches for geographic data, and some data sets can be downloaded for free.
Color Landform Atlas of the United States The Earth from Space: An Astronaut's Views of the Home Planet
This NASA site features over 250,000 images taken from orbit. Categorized and searchable.
Envirofacts Maps on Demand (United States Environmental Protection Agency)
The web-based mapping tools available at this site allow you to create maps for places in the coterminous United States using a variety of environmental data. The "EnviroMapper" tool "allows users to view spatial data at the national, state, and county levels, as well as utilize GIS functionality, such as displaying multiple spatial layers, zooming, panning, identifying features, and querying single Envirofacts points."
Geographic Information Systems - Internet Resources
Page maintained by the University of Michigan's Media Union Library includes links to several sources of geographic data and mapping tools, newsgroups, important government sites, and more.

People Research ... Intranets SEARCH THIS SITE SEARCH WHOLE UNIVERSITY BA Geography (L700) / BSc Geography (F800) All our courses in all three years are available to both BA and BSc students. Each year of study will involve you in gaining 120 credits. To be awarded an Honours degree you need 360 credits. Some courses are compulsory, especially in the first year . So there are foundation courses in contemporary human geography and in environmental processes. However, even in the first year there is some choice and you may take 20 credits from course modules outside Geography if you wish. Popular choices for such Modules outside the Main Discipline (MOMDs) include ‘How the Earth Works’ from Earth Sciences; Urban and Regional Studies; Media and Cultural Studies; and African Studies. Clearly, these courses are related to Geography, but you could also do nuclear physics if you have the appropriate background! In the second year only half your course is compulsory and these courses are all about how to become a reasonably proficient and professional geographer: how to think geographically; how to use statistical data; the problems and possibilities of using different techniques in human and physical geography; and how to devise a research project. The optional modules allow you to begin to determine the sort of geographer you want to become. You can be someone with skills and knowledge in environmental processes and management; or someone developing expertise in physical geography; or you may prefer to find out what makes cities and economies work, or the impact of different forms of social organisation and culture on the way people live. Or you may prefer to keep your options as wide as possible and take course across this broad spectrum. At Birmingham you can do any of these things because we think it important that you are able to build the degree you want.
