British group studying the evolution of the Antarctic iceatmosphere-ocean system to predict future behavior. Includes ice imagery, climate maps, and current research on icebergs, ice sheets, climate, ozone depletion, and the impact of ultraviolet radiation on the environment.

Please note: BAS has re-organised its web service. The primary web server is now www.antarctica.ac.uk to which all services will, presumably, slowly migrate. Most "useful" content from the pages below has moved into www.antarctica.ac.uk/met In the meantime these old pages remain. Some are legacy pages and will not be updated. NONE OF THE PAGES BELOW ARE BEING UPDATED. It is perhaps worth noting that the Ice and Climate division no longer even exists, having been absorbed into PSD division. The aim of the research undertaken by the Ice and Climate Division is to understand the present behaviour of the ice-atmosphere-ocean system in Antarctica and its evolution in the past, and to use this knowledge to predict future behaviour. NASA study finds 'human-caused land cover changes' key
By Richard Stenger (CNN)
Story Tools
(CNN) Cutting trees, building cities and growing crops have profound effects on the climate in addition to human activities that release greenhouse gases, a new NASA study reports. Land surface disturbances influence everything from temperature, precipitation, atmospheric circulation and how much solar heat bounces off the planet. Concentrated development, in particular in North America, Europe and Southeast Asia, disperses enough heat into the atmosphere to rival the effect of all greenhouse gas emissions combined, according to atmospheric scientists. "Our work suggests that the impacts of human-caused land cover changes on climate are at least as important, and quite possibly more important, than those of carbon dioxide," said Roger Pielke Sr. of Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Carbon dioxide is the primary culprit among numerous heat-trapping gases caused by human activity thought to contribute to global warming.

89. Investor Network On Climate Risk
Organization serving institutional investors to increase understanding of climate risk on portfolios. Coordinates related UN Summits, conferences, briefings, meetings, and the publication and distribution of reports. Member and public access. United States.
http://www.incr.com/

Welcome to incr.com
The Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR) was launched by 10 investor leaders on November 21, 2003 at the Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk at the United Nations in New York City. INCR leaders convened a new Institutional Investor Summit at the UN on May 10, 2005 and announced a new Investor Call for Action
Investor Guide to Climate Risk
INCR released the Investor Guide to Climate Risk in July 2004 to advise investors on addressing the financial risks and investment opportunities posed by climate risk. The guide, commissioned by CERES and written by the Investor Responsibility Research Center, identifies action steps for plan sponsors and fund managers as well as the companies in which they invest.
Our Activities
The purpose of the Investor Network on Climate Risk (INCR) is to promote better understanding of the risks of climate change among institutional investors. INCR encourages companies in which its members invest to address any material risks and opportunities to their businesses associated with climate change and a shift to a lower carbon economy. Climate risk includes financial, fiduciary and liability risk ensuing from climate change.
Investor Actions on Climate Risk
INCR is coordinating follow-up to the 2005 Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk, as well as the 2003 Summit. For more information on these events, click on the links below:

Climate Change Climate change is one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. During the last century, the Earth's average surface temperature rose by around 0.6°C. Evidence is getting stronger that most of the global warming that has occurred over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. In its Third Assessment Report, published in 2001, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projects that global average surface temperatures will rise by a further 1.4 to 5.8°C by the end of this century. This global temperature increase is likely to trigger serious consequences for humanity and other life forms alike, including a rise in sea levels of an estimated 9 to 88 cm by the end of this century, which will endanger coastal areas and small islands, and a greater frequency and severity of extreme weather events. Human activities that contribute to climate change include in particular the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, both of which cause emissions of carbon dioxide (CO

U.N. climate expert backs Kyoto
GENEVA, Switzerland Industrialised countries should press ahead with ratifying the Kyoto treaty on global warming with or without the United States, a U.N. climate expert has said. Michael Zammit Cutajar, the Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, told a news conference on Thursday that if other nations moved towards ratification at a negotiating session in Bonn on July 16, the door could be left open for the U.S. to join later. IN-DEPTH Climate change Bonn deal: Main points Greenhouse effect Regional consequences ... News search In-Depth Specials Bonn 2001 summit Fallout from Kyoto Japan, which has sent out mixed signals of its intentions, was now pivotal to the future of the agreement which aims to raze five percent off 1990 greenhouse gas emission levels by 2012, Reuters quoted Cutajar saying. U.S. President George W. Bush rejected the Kyoto treaty, signed by his predecessor Bill Clinton, when he came to office arguing that it discriminated against industrialised nations and would harm growth in the U.S. economy.

Welcome! If you'd like to "change the climate" around marijuana to keep your kids safe from hard drugs, to save thousands of your tax dollars, and to stop the senseless arrest of millions, then support Change the Climate It's a campaign, founded by parents and business professionals, to educate the public about the tremendous waste of our tax dollars for the "war on marijuana" and the increasing threat to our basic civil liberties. Our goal is to tell the truth about marijuana to de-demonize it so that someday, politicians will support marijuana reform legislation. Support us now and help us tell the truth. Like other drugs, marijuana is NOT for kids. But providing inaccurate information about marijuana in the form of "shock ads" only discredits adults and our efforts to curb marijuana use by young people. Click here for ideas on how to talk to your kids about marijuana. Change the Climate's advertising campaign is an effective way to change attitudes and bring marijuana reform directly to the people billboards and banner ads reach different people than NY Times and New Republic ads. Politicians will NOT make any effort to change unjust, wasteful and unconstitutional marijuana laws until it's clear that people are fed up with these laws. Since 1996, medical marijuana initiatives have been passed by a majority of voters in eight states and the District of Columbia and no state has ever rejected a medical marijuana initiative. Currently, one in five voters in the U.S. lives in a state where marijuana is legal for medicinal purposes.

Climate Forcing CMDL conducts sustained observations and research related to global distributions, trends, sources and sinks of atmospheric constituents that are capable of forcing change in the climate of the Earth. This research will advance climate projections and provide scientific policy-relevant, decision support information to enhance society's ability to plan and respond. Ozone Depletion CMDL conducts research on the depletion of the global stratospheric ozone layer and Antarctic ozone hole through global surface-based monitoring of total-column ozone, ultraviolet radiation, and ozone-depleting gases, including those regulated by the Montreal Protocol. Continued surveillance is necessary in order to verify the expected recovery of the ozone layer.

Map of the climate of the Earth comment on the removal. The climate (ancient Greek ) is the weather averaged over a long period of time. A descriptive saying is that "climate is what you expect, weather is what you get." The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) glossary definition is:
Climate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the “average weather”, or more rigorously, as the statistical description in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands or millions of years. The classical period is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). These quantities are most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind. Climate in a wider sense is the state, including a statistical description, of the climate system.
