    Great Classroom Accommodations for ADHD
    • Allow for extra movement. When given a choice, no ADHD child of mine ever sat at a table with feet on the floor to study homework. Indeed, when they had to study in a setting that didn't allow movement, their performance declined. I've seen classrooms where children are allowed to sit on low tables, or even under the tables, to read and write. The room was relatively quiet and orderly, even though there were a number of children with impulsivity and hyperactivity. You see, when the impulsivity and hyperactivity is accommodated, it tends to diminish with such accommodations. Build a quiet corner. A soft rug, some beanbag chairs, make-due foam pillows in a back corner offers a more natural setting for leisure reading. Study carrels offer privacy and personal space when needed. Carrels can be placed against the back wall or folding individual carrels can be constructed of hardboard and placed on the student's desk. Student can decorate as desired. Preferential seating.

Using Blogs to Integrate Technology in the Classroom

As the Internet becomes an increasingly pervasive and persistent influence in people's lives, the phenomenon of the blog stands out as a fine example of the way in which the Web enables individual participation in the marketplace of ideas.
Teachers have picked up on the creative use of this Internet technology and put the blog to work in the classroom. The education blog can be a powerful and effective technology tool for students and teachers alike.

None of Judy Herrell's fifth-grade students brought notebooks or textbooks to class today. They didn't bring any yesterday either. In fact, fifth-graders in Herrell's class haven't brought notebooks to class for years. Yet according to their teacher, students in this class are making grades that are "off the wall" in reading and math - and achieving scores of 4 or higher on the FCAT. How is that possible?
Herrell's classes at Flamingo Elementary in Hialeah are conducted in a completely paperless learning environment. Everything - lessons, homework and tests - is done on the Internet. Although this classroom with computers encased in glass desktops is hardly typical, it demonstrates one of the many ways that South Florida schools are using technology to teach students.
While parents may be more comfortable with conventional methods of learning and teaching, education is different today, and students are different too. Children work differently than when their parents were kids, relying as much on the Internet and multimedia software as they do on textbooks, poster board and glue to complete projects and assignments. It stands to reason that they use technology during their school day as well. "The way our kids learn should be a reflection of the way they live their lives," says Sylvia Diaz, executive director of instructional technology for Miami-Dade schools.

    96. MOO?
Even the classroom is getting competition in eworld, collaborative whiteboard teaching software, and the ubiquitous Instant Messenger programs.
    http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/jod/teachdemo/moo.html
    MOO : The virtual classroom.
Even the classroom is getting competition in e-world, the real interactive classroom. 2002 update: PennMOO, described below as the first Latin MOO in history, is shutting down now, years after its glory days. What has happened most influentially in this area is the emergence of chat rooms, collaborative "whiteboard" teaching software, and the ubiquitous Instant Messenger programs. I miss the particular spirit of play that came about in an imagined but purely textual environment, and was always fond of the seven different genders that you could choose among there, but technology moves on. The possibilities are endless. In spring 1995, Prof. Alan Filreis of our English Department will be using the PennMOO aggressively. He has put together his own more detailed introduction for his students. Penn's MOO is (was) also the first Latin MOO in cyberspace, passing under the name MUGIT (which is Latin for the noise a cow makes but seems also to acronymize Multorum Utentium Gregi Interesse Transcribendo "to be in a flock of many users by writing"). To join the discussion, telnet to ccat.sas.upenn.edu 7777 and then say "connect Latin Latin" you will be assigned the identity of a classical god or mythical figure. To find out when others may be expected to be in the MUGIT area to "speak" Latin with you, finger bmr@ccat.sas.upenn.edu the .plan file gives updated schedules. "This is something that is pleasurable and motivating and yet, embedded in that, is an increase in vocabulary from reading, anticipating plots. There are a lot of good skills …in this."
    Maryland Schools Supt. Nancy Grasmick
(CBS) It wasn't that long ago when comic books were considered junk, the kind of reading material you hid from your parents and teachers. But that's not the case anymore in some schools in Maryland, reports The Early Show national correspondent Thalia Assuras
Comic books are being taken quite seriously in those schools, which are taking part in an experiment in which comic books are used as a teaching tool. Some of the comic books, Assuras notes, aren't even funny. They're storybooks with pictures, or graphic novels.

What a creative way to expand on the knowledge that Knoppix can provide students . When I read that Ming Chow was offering his students a Knoppix CD to experiment with, I had to admit I was impressed. What a cool way for kids to get their feet wet with Linux and still be able to go back to a Windows desktop at the end of the day. Great forward thinking! This a great way to us a tool that many of us take for granted everyday. Like that FedEx Super Bowl commercial that said every great commercial must have a certain list of elements (a celebrity, some animal, a kick in the groin, a punchline, etc), every great class should have a certain list of elements for its success. Students love examples, hands-on demonstrations, and something to keep and utilize for a long time to come. Because of the increasing use of technology in the classroom, and it is commonplace for most rooms to have a computer and even a projector, instructors want flexibility and consistency of technology. The Knoppix CD satisfies the need of students and instructors.
I am currently teaching my course entitled Security, Privacy, and Politics in the Computer Age, offered at Tufts University by the Experimental College. There is a Dell computer in the room that I teach in, but it is problematic. I have to login using some generic account, thus I do not have many privileges; error messages about the hard drive running low on space, but there actually is plenty of space, constantly pop up; and I can't run some examples from the SSH terminal that is provided on the computer. To resolve these problems, I boot the computer using the latest Knoppix CD. For instructors who roam to different classrooms, a Knoppix CD is nice because you will have a consistent look-and-feel on different computers, a consistent and flexible set of tools, and you can bypass numerous barriers.

Anne Taylor teaches at the University of New Mexico, George Vlastos is an architect, and Robert Aldrich, who teaches at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was the first director of the National Institute of Mental Health's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. - Robert Gilman
There are a number of environments in which children must spend a large share of their time. Some of these are antagonistic, hostile or incompatible to self-expression. In this regard, the American school leaves little room for a sense of ownership or involvement. Students have very little to say, and are rarely asked for their opinions, about their school's physical characteristics . In its present state, the architecture and physical setting of most American schools is deplorable. It almost always follows the passive "egg crate" closed classroom format of 200 years ago, and all too often it is more like a prison than a place of discovery, wonder and creativity. It doesn't have to be this way. Since 1972 two of us (Taylor and Vlastos) have been studying the effects of learning environments on the behavior and learning of children. We are convinced that school environments have a largely untapped potential as active contributors to the learning process. It is also our contention that every teacher, administrator and child is a potential designer. Great amounts of money are not needed. Careful thought, time, enthusiasm and efficiency of planning can make a school ready to create the kind of learning environment so crucial to student growth.
