Columnists Fred Jones FRED JONES Read a brief bio of Fred Jones at the bottom of this page. Bell Work "Bell Work" is the work that students are doing when the opening bell rings. It's the work that separates the world of the classroom from the world of play. It's the work that provides purpose to the process of "settling in." Dr. Fred Jones explains how Bell Work can add teaching and learning time to your day. Starting the New School Year On the first day of school, the first question in students' minds is, "Who are you?" Their second question is, "Who are they?" Students do better in class when they are comfortable, relaxed, and "at home." A very good reason to devote the lion's share of your first class period of the year to creating comfort. Omission Training for Behavior Problems “Omission Training in conjunction with Responsibility Training is as close to magic as you will get in behavior management,” says Dr. Fred Jones. “It has the power to all but eliminate reliance on such sanctions as office referrals and parent conferences…. I have seen it bring an outcast child into the middle of the class sociogram in two weeks!”

DRAFT- 8/16/98 Technology in the Classroom: Tools for Doing Things Differently or Doing Different Things Margaret Riel University of California, San Diego Kathleen Fulton University of Maryland Paper Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association San Diego, April 1998 Abstract Today's technological tools make it possible to teach in new waysto do things differently or even to do entirely different things. This paper explores issues of school reform and the role of technology in designing new learning environments. We begin not with the technology but with the challenges that face schools and examine why reform is necessary. What are the problems that stimulate the call for teaching and learning in new ways? How does today's reform context lead to a greater emphasis on building learning communities as appropriate and effective vehicles for new learning for students and teachers? After building this contextual framework, we consider the role technology plays in providing solutions to educational problems and in supporting learning communities. We end by exploring how technology tools can support different forms of learning and understanding. Rationale for School Reform We open this paper with prevailing attitudes about the need for school reform, to do things differently. Technology plays a role in these efforts and at the same time can provide extension past these goals to new ideas for organizing learning.

16. Art Hazards In The Classroom
classroom management. How are the distribution and pickup of tools and materials What about the handling of any hazardous materials in the classroom?
http://www.arts.ufl.edu/art/rt_room/teach/art_hazards.html
A s a service to art teachers and parents, we offer this information on maintaining a safe and hazard-free learning environment for kids while engaged in art activities. This material was originally written by Allison Jerard, a former art education student at the University of Florida. Return to resources Art teachers have a responsibility to provide their students with a safe learning environment. Ensuring a safe and hazard-free classroom should begin with a thorough inventory and understanding of the existing conditions. The following outline of questions indicates the type of information that should be gathered. General Classroom Conditions
  • Housekeeping. Is there dirt, debris and dust around the room? Is there adequate storage and access? Are there informational and warning signs in key places?
  • Tools and equipment. What is there place and condition? Is there a maintenance schedule for all tools and equipment?
  • Lighting. Is there natural and/or artificial light? Is it adequate?
  • Ventilation. What are the provisions for general and local fresh air sources?
Current Practices
  • Instructional methods. How and to what extent are health and safety issues included in lesson presentations and general classroom instruction?
