A unique school discipline process
An alternative to classroom management programs,
traditional classroom discipline programs, or any school behavior management program.
School discipline shouldn't involve punishment, whether it is a traditional classroom discipline program or any school behavior management program. When students are having difficulties getting along with others in school, as for example bullying and fighting, or with following school rules and procedures, rather than punishing students when school discipline is called for, wouldn't it be a more effective way of helping those disruptive students by dealing with them in the same way as students who are having difficulty in reading?
A reading teacher teaches students in a calm, respectful atmosphere how to develop the skills needed for reading. Rather than a classroom management program, it should be a program to help the student develop the ability to figure out a better way of getting along, to think responsibly. This has to be taught. Neither punishment nor rewards teach students how to think.

Toward a Conception of Culturally Responsive Classroom Management
Carol S. Weinstein Rutgers University Saundra Tomlinson-Clarke Rutgers University Mary Curran Rutgers University Given the increasing diversity of our classrooms, a lack of multicultural competence can exacerbate the difficulties that novice teachers have with classroom management. Definitions and expectations of appropriate behavior are culturally influenced, and conflicts are likely to occur when teachers and students come from different cultural backgrounds. The purpose of this article is to stimulate discussion of culturally responsive classroom management (CRCM). We propose a conception of CRCM

    The Metamorphosis of Classroom Management
By Fran Mayeski A classroom is a place where students gather to learn. Creating a safe and orderly environment in the classroom is a survival skill for teachers and optimizes the learning environment for students. The strategies teachers use to create such classroom environments have been studied and developed as the area of "classroom management" for many years. This article will examine recent changes in this field and provide concrete examples of new approaches. Historical Perspective In the 1970s and '80s, researchers and practitioners examined management issues such as how to organize the room, make it safe and establish the rules of behavior for the students in that classroom. Management is defined by Randolph (1985) as working with and through others to accomplish the organization's goals. The major reform agenda of that period, "effective schools " was focused on the organization level.

    Action Research Reports
PROF 190G CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT IN THE COMPUTER LAB Lisa Lacaria INTRODUCTION A primary concern in my teaching is that of classroom management. Throughout my grade two placement I found that this was the most difficult aspect of teaching. When I found out that my final placement was going to be teaching computer studies to the entire school, a feeling of anxiety came over me. How was I ever going to control fourteen different classes when I only saw them once a week? The idea of doing this for my action research project did not come to me rightaway. I spent the first week in this placement watching my associate teacher teach and getting a feel for the classes. I found this even more stressful than I had ever imagined. My associate teacher had control of the class, but there still were those moments when he had to raise his voice or use another technique of getting everyone back on track. It was not until I was in a meeting with my faculty liaison that the idea came to me. The only way I was going to feel comfortable and in control teaching in front of the different classes was to do research on the topic. THE PROCESS Once I had decided upon my topic, the next step was to develop a plan. I discussed my idea of doing my action research project on classroom management in the computer lab with my associate teacher and he became very excited with the idea. He helped me throughout the process, inviting me to experiment with the different classes. He encouraged me to take risks and try different techniques. He aided by supplying resources on the topic and by sitting with me at the end of each day and discussing how things were going. He was always filled with positive reinforcement and suggestions on how I might go about something differently that had failed.

Philosophy of Teaching For the Love of Poetry: Unit Plan Unraveling the Classroom Management Mystery ... Dedication Unraveling the Classroom Management Mystery Artifact/s: Classroom management plan. (See Artifact 2.1) Context: The artifact included in this entry slip is the Classroom Management Plan I wrote for my Adolescent Development class during my time in the Master in Teaching program. The Classroom Management Plan helped us to begin thinking about what classroom management is and how it looks in the classroom. It focused on the practical aspect of teaching versus the theoretical. The insight I gained came from the classes I taught during my student teaching experience teaching Language Arts and Social Studies to seventh graders. Goal/s and Target/s: 3A: Communication Strategies By articulating to students what is expected of them, and the rewards and consequences that follow behavior choices (a reward at the end of class for time well spent during class as well as explicit rules concerning the non-negotiable umbrella of respect), I demonstrate knowledge of communication strategies. 3B: Classroom Management By presenting my classroom management plan and evidence of implementing various strategies (formal and informal agreements, student self-monitoring, and the dreaded "teacher stare" among them) to ensure a safe and productive classroom environment, I demonstrate knowledge of classroom management.
