23. The Classroom Management Plan
This plan will enable you to better understand how you will teach and increase A philosophical statement on your beliefs about classroom management.
http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~afeldman/beingnewteacher/classmanageplan.html
The Classroom Management Plan Through your work for this course you should be beginning to develop your ideas about how best to manage your classroom. There is certainly no one best way and teachers develop their own style of classroom management. This also remains a work in progress as teachers change and develop their style according to their experiences and the classes they teach. At appropriate points you should refer to the relevant theorists that we have discussed in this course. The plan should include the following: (you should give a rationale for your choices) 1.A philosophical statement on your beliefs about classroom management. This should include a description of what you believe to be your teaching style. 2.Room arrangement map, or maps for different types of activities including a student seating arrangement, teacher desk, resources, displays, etc. You should include a written explanation of your choice of arrangement(s). 5.A description of how you intend to encourage and respond to positive students and how you will manage students that are behaving negatively in your class. What techniques are you going to use to maximize the effectiveness of your classroom management? You should refer to specific techniques that we have discussed in class. Sample plan [Developed by Instructor: Colin Haysman, Stanford University]

      Not everyone needs the same amount of time to accomplish a given task; Not everyone need necessarily use the same software; Trying to ensure that all students use the computer for a certain period of time each week is counterproductive in terms of integration; It is better to have fewer, longer periods than more frequent, shorter periods where little is accomplished; With a class divided into five groups for instance, assign computer access one day per group per week; Avoid periods which will be interrupted (e.g. by music); Most advise against allowing those who finish other work first to use the computer, since these end up often being the same, more academically capable students. Thus weaker or more thorough students miss out;
    Vary the usage and types of access.
      Whole class work; Group projects (grouping is considered in more detail in a later section); Partners; Individuals; Open-scheduling (e.g. 10 minutes per person X the number of people).
    For at risk or otherwise challenged students:

    Classroom Management
    Mary Ellen O'Leary, Department of Mathematics Most college students embark on a learning experience with a new instructor with various anxieties and questions on their minds. They also wonder, Does the teacher care? Is the teacher fair? Does this instructor know the subject matter? Will I get something out of this course? You will, of course, want your students to arrive at affirmative answers to these concerns and questions. You wish to earn the respect of your students, and you want to provide a setting where each individual can gain as much as possible from the course. This will require the use of skillful classroom managementa broad concept which touches in one way or another on every component of effective teaching. Your management goals should be:
    • to adopt efficient methods of handling logistical details, some of which are mundane, but others of which have a more profound impact on the quality of the course;
    • to inspire the students' confidence in your mastery of the subject matter, and their faith in your ability to conduct the course in a competent, fair and well-organized manner;
    • to establish and maintain a positive and supportive atmosphere in the classroom, an environment of mutual respect, courtesy and consideration for others.

    Classroom management
    Rules are in. So is independent thinking.
    When she was at the University of Texas at Austin 20 years ago, Carolyn Evertson directed a research program that was the first to study how elementary and secondary classroom teachers started the school year and how they established their initial rapport with students and got their classrooms off to a smooth start.
    "There were a lot of opinions about what teachers should do, but no one had ever studied what teachers actually did in their classrooms," said Evertson, chair of Peabody's Department of Teaching and Learning and a professor of education.
    "From those initial observations and 10 subsequent studies, we learned a great deal about how effective teachers manage the learning environment. For example, they begin early to teach rules and procedures; they monitor students' academic work and behavior carefully; they are proactive in stopping misbehavior before it happens; they establish ways to provide students frequent feedback; and they work at making their instruction clear."
    Knowing how teachers succeed in traditional classrooms, Evertson decided last year to learn how teachers succeed in more challenging and complex classroom settings. "We had learned how teachers operated effectively in more traditional settings where the teacher is the center of the instructional activities and the main source of information besides the textbook," she said. "We wanted to understand how effective teachers managed classrooms in which many activities were going on at once and where students were working together and where students learned to take responsibility for their own learning."

    Classroom Management

    This page tells you how to use a limited number of laptops in the classroom, how to care for and protect laptops, and how to facilitate student communication on computers. Limited Numbers of Laptops
    When laptops are limited, teachers can arrange for group use, rotational use, and free time access of the computers. Students can also check out laptops overnight or during vacations. Care of Laptops
    Laptops are portable, which means they can be taken everywhere—even into the mud and the rain. Special care must be taken of these computers, as for all scientific and electronic equipment.
    • Keep all equipment dry and clean. If you are using a laptop where it is wet or muddy, put the keyboard in a clear plastic bag. On field trips, use a dry box and a wet box to separate supplies and equipment. Air-dry all equipment at the end of the activity. For younger classes, adult chaperones can be responsible for equipment.

    We've all known for a long time about soap and shampoo bottles that can be put to use in the classroom holding glue, water, whatever . Having just started wearing contact lenses, we've discovered another: the cleaning solution bottle. Smaller in size than soap bottles, with a flip top cap that won't get lost, these are great for glue, but you may want to use a small drill bit or a red-hot nail to make the hole larger. Anyone who wears contact lenses goes through this solution regularly, so have them save the bottles for you. Popcorn Day
