  • "What are the motivations behind giving an open-book/open-notes exam? Does giving free access to all of the resources of the Internet conflict with these motivations?" by Evan Golub
    Department of Computer Science
    Human-Computer Interaction Lab
University of Maryland Motivation Today's student has a variety of technology available for use in the classroom. Hardware devices (such as laptops, in-room PCs, or palmtops) in conjunction with software (such as word processors and outliners) and eText resources (such as eBooks and WebBooks) offer students the ability to become more paper-free in their studies. Some devices (such as the TabletPC platform or Sony's Vaio U750P) and related software (such as Journal, GoBinder, or OneNote) would seem to aspire to replace the paper notebook. Faculty can encourage the use of computers in general by posting notes on-line and selecting on-line text books for the required readings. As more students come to own devices such as these, one would hope that more faculty would take steps to enabling their use in class. There are a variety of questions tangentially related to this goal. For example, if you encourage electronic note-taking, do you also encourage the electronic submission of work? There are issues regarding uniform access as well as compatibility to consider, but I think we can look back (to the transition from handwritten papers to typed papers being required) as well as forward (XML, PDF, etc.) for solutions to this. The issue which this article asks you to consider in this setting is; how do we as faculty support the use of computers for note-taking and reading course material while still allowing for the option of an open-book/open-notes exam?

BY RHONDA RAIDER Snapshot: Many educational institutions of all sizes are undergoing a fundamental shift a shift fueled by Internet technology and the knowledge that not all students and classrooms are created equal. This article lays out some of the ways that grade schools and universities are using Internet technology such as streaming media, wireless networking, and IP video to transform how curriculum is delivered and how and where students learn. Keywords: Nearly every service industry has abandoned the one-size-fits-all approach in recent decades, smartly recognizing that customers have unique needs. Today, educational institutions of all sizes are poised to undergo a similar shift one fueled by Internet technology and the knowledge that not all students are created equal. "Most classrooms still follow the teaching model of early last century," says Dr. Fred Siff, vice president and chief information officer (CIO) at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. "If you want to learn managerial accounting, you show up in the classroom Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 a.m. and sit for 50 minutes. Finally, with Internet technology, we can deliver instruction in more interesting, innovative, and learner-centered ways." In fact, in elementary-grade classrooms and universities alike, Internet technology such as streaming media and wireless networking are reinventing classrooms and transforming the

    I. Summary of Skills Implemented throughout the Unit
Integrating Shakespearean Tragedy with the Internet is an interdisciplinary unit that challenges students to use William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as a springboard to implement the following skills: basic skills, communication, inquiry, problem solving, synthesis, and critical thinking.
Basic skills and communication are addressed through reading, writing, and history. Math skills are addressed at a very minimal level in the unit as students comprehend the historical timeline. Initially, students read and make notes on Internet information as they perform research on the Greek-Roman archetype found in the myth of Pyramus and Thisbe, Elizabethan England, William Shakespeare, the Globe Theater, and the Hatfield-McCoy story. Students write summaries of these topics.
