The 21st Century Classroom: Internet Technology Transforms the Where, When, and How of E-Learning
          21st Century Classroom
Internet technology transforms the where, when, and how of learning.
BY RHONDA RAIDER Snapshot: Many educational institutions of all sizes are undergoing a fundamental shift a shift fueled by Internet technology and the knowledge that not all students and classrooms are created equal. This article lays out some of the ways that grade schools and universities are using Internet technology such as streaming media, wireless networking, and IP video to transform how curriculum is delivered and how and where students learn. Keywords: Nearly every service industry has abandoned the one-size-fits-all approach in recent decades, smartly recognizing that customers have unique needs. Today, educational institutions of all sizes are poised to undergo a similar shift one fueled by Internet technology and the knowledge that not all students are created equal. "Most classrooms still follow the teaching model of early last century," says Dr. Fred Siff, vice president and chief information officer (CIO) at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. "If you want to learn managerial accounting, you show up in the classroom Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9 a.m. and sit for 50 minutes. Finally, with Internet technology, we can deliver instruction in more interesting, innovative, and learner-centered ways."

Having been around just a very few years, the Internet, as we have come to know it, has grown into a virtual smorgasbord of educational information. It is up to teachers, as users, to determine if the information is valid and worth sharing in a classroom environment. Many teachers today are still novices on the Internet. Sites that instruct as well as inform can be very helpful. The Busy Teachers' Website is designed to do just thathelp busy teachers learn to use the Internet and integrate it into their classroom projects. As a teacher, I have found the Internet to have many and varied uses. The most helpful, I would have to say, is the sharing of ideasonline!! Educational discussion rooms and listservs such as Classroom Connect and Teach Talk offer forums for the online exchange of valuable information. The Alphabet Superhighway is a great site for elementary school teachers to visit! Once there you'll find an educational website sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, assisting teachers, and students as well, in creating, locating, and communicating
