The following sub-topics are available:
  • Carnatic Hindustani
    Brief general discussion:
As regards Indian classical music in general, there are a huge number of modes (ragas). Musicians will elaborate a single mode in detail, largely through improvisation but also based on compositions and formal demands. There are also pieces (called "ragamala" or "ragamalika") in which modulations are employed. Individual pieces are shorter in Carnatic music, so recitals are constructed by selecting items in contrasting ragas. The rationale is specifically contrast (usually), as opposed to Turkish music where modes are chosen for a directed development, or Arabic music where the frequent modulations should be as unnoticed as possible, etc. A general aesthetic discussion of this type could become much more extensive; please see my regular column for a series of more speculative remarks. In both Hindustani & Carnatic music, songs (or instrumental compositions in Hindustani music) are usually (although not always) preceded by an improvised unmeasured prelude (alap/alaapana) which is sometimes extensive. This is followed by the "composition section" in which a specific rhythmic cycle (tala) is used (ordinarily with percussion accompaniment). Although it is usually based upon a pre-existing composition, there are specific improvisational features to this section as well. This aspect earns Indian classical music comparisons with Western Jazz, with which it shares some demands.

China: Classical Instrumental Music
literati music which is my priority. Returning to more generally available recordings, many are orchestral of various types, and so of lesser interest to me. There are also some song recordings, but I have not explored those as much. Somewhat unusually, instrumental performance has long had a certain kind of pre-eminence in Chinese art music, as scholars of all disciplines were expected to become proficient in it. Chinese music is basically pentatonic-diatonic, meaning that the basic pentatonic scale can be modulated within a diatonic context. The theory talks of 12-notes to an octave, but most of the compositions are overwhelmingly pentatonic with diatonic/chromatic passing tones. This is even more true of the traditional orchestral music than of the more intricate scholarly music which makes up most of this page. Generally speaking, the Chinese tunes with which many readers will be familiar are much simpler than most of what appears here. There are rather few classical compositions, although each instrument has its own repertory. Some of these repertories are several centuries old, and musicians add to them only slowly, especially in some areas. Therefore many compositions will be repeated from CD to CD, mostly for the same instrument, but sometimes versions exist for more than one instrument. Also, a performance by a musician from a different lineage will often bring out different facets. I will especially emphasize qin music, and look to buy many such recordings. Now there are literally dozens available, of very high quality. The

Classical Music
Easier - Some people think of classical music as anything that is played in a concert hall. Others consider it any music that has lasting value such as classical jazz or pop. However to most people, it is a particular time in musical history from 1750 to 1820. Harder - Many famous composers come from the classical period including Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Some people would also include composers from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods. The classical period is known for its simple, clear music, balanced themes, and defined harmony. Rather than the heavy, formal music of the past, classical was intended to be tuneful and elegant with dances such as the minuet.
