42. AFROCENTRIC VOICES In "Classical" Music
Focuses on African American singers and composers who have contributed significantly to the world of vocal classical music.
http://www.afrovoices.com/
NEWLY PUBLISHED!
African Americans have had a profound impact on the development of music in the United States. While their role in the history of American popular and folk music is now generally acknowledged and appreciated, their influence within the "classical" music world has received little attentioneven within the African American community. Afrocentric Voices focuses on African American performers and composers and on the vocal music forms they influenced, especially opera, art songs and Negro spirituals composed for concert performance. The musicians profiled here not only opened pathways for today's young African Americans through their own accomplishments, they advised and encouraged youth with lectures and master classes, articles and books. Many of them established scholarships and competitions for young musicians whose talents and desires lead them to seek out careers in "classical" music. These artists showedand continue to show the African American community that support of their young artists is important and does yield positive results. Presented here is an extensive bibliography of books and other research resources. There is a smallbut growinglist of

Welcome to Classical Music on the Net. For beginners, the net is like arriving in New York City without a map. For others, the web has too many sites that offer little quality information. Novice musicians as well as experts can find sites and information online. I have run this site for ten years. I started back before the internet was even public with Tradewave Galaxy hosting the site.

1511 Westminster Tournament. George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower (c.1780-1860) was a violin prodigy who had an African American father and a white mother. He began performing at age ten, and was soon given a post as a court musician for the Prince of Wales. In 1803 Bridgetower met Ludwig van Beethoven while on tour.  Beethoven composed his "Kreutzer Sonata" for Bridgetower, and accompanied him on piano at the work's premiere in Vienna, also in 1803.  Bibliography Bisdary - Gourbeyre, 2001. The music on these web pages is all from recordings, most often cassettes, that are either out of print, only available in the country of origin, or both. In most cases, they appear here with the gracious permission of either the artists or the recording companies. Sometimes, if I am unable to locate anyone involved, I have made them available assuming that there is nobody who would object. If you have any direct knowledge that someone's rights are being infringed, I will delete those songs from the server. Please contact me if there are any legal issues at: cliffsloane@pop.halcyon.com The original recordings were often less than optimal. I have improved the sound as much as I can with noise reduction software, but it can never achieve "CD" quality. They have been encoded primarily in variable bitrate to get the best sound for the file size. These files are often quite large because I chose to encode them at higher quality settings. If you have a dialup or a slow connection, write to me. With enough demand, I will be happy to upload low-bitrate files.

About This Music Search
When you know a melody and you do not know its title or composer, this melody search engine will help you. The search engine retrieves the title and the composer of the melody you entered. The database includes more than 1500 classical music melodies. It covers most of famous classical melodies. The database is frequently updated.
Before You Use
  • Your browser is required to handle a Java applet. If not, activate Java capability.
  • Your computer needs a soundcard to decode a sound (.au) file. Also, MIDI playback capability is required to listen to the retrieved MIDI file.
  • Some melodies in the database are not exactly the same as the original. They are simplified for easy and fast search. To listen to the original music, go to Internet MIDI archives, for example, http://www.prs.net/midi.html
  • I am doing my best to build the correct database, but some incorrect data might exist. I never guarantee the correctness of the search result. I do not compensate for any loss the wrong result causes.
  • I believe this program causes no trouble to your computer, but I do not take any responsibility even if your computer gets some damage.
