Composer biographies
This document does not attempt to be a final word on anything. It has always been in a state of flux, and I expect it will continue to be so for a while to come. Some of my information is woefully inadequate (my entry for Schubert read famous song composer for an embarrassingly long time), and a good proportion of the rest is little more than (what I hope is at least reasonably informed) opinion.

The composers
Bach, Johann Sebastian
  • Born: Eisenach (Germany), 21 March 1685
  • Died: 28 July 1750
One of the greatest Baroque composers along with Handel . His most famous works are probably the Brandenburg Concerti , the Well-tempered clavier The art of fugue , his Mass in B-minor, and the St. Matthew Passion . Needless to say, I wholeheartedly recommend each and every one of the above works. Bach links:

"A vital personality on today's music scene, Tania León is highly regarded as a composer and conductor ..." "... a polyvore and omniglot, and - in his case - both in spite and because of this, a musician with a completely unique language, immediately recognizable, appealing directly to musicians and the audience, and with a consistent high level." (from the Jury Report awarding the 3M Stipend) "[He] brings Chinese music into a new era which is both ancient and modern.... His music is sober but at the same time emotional, deeply expressing the original vitality of the folk life and folk arts.... There is no doubt that he is going to be a master figure among Chinese composers." (Hong Kong's Dagong News) "His music is somewhere between atonal and tonal, and he has found a very personal and strong language in dark colours, gripping in the contrast between extremely lyrical passages and inexorable rhythms." (Mirjam Tschopp)
