ABOUT THE CSU CLASSICAL STUDIES COLLECTION
Please send any comments or suggestions to Lesley Jorbin , selector for Classical Studies The Library has emphasized the building of a foundation of core texts and basic editions (Oxford, Teubner, Bude) suitable for an undergraduate program in the original languages, and has collected the entire Loeb Classical Library . These have been supplemented with good translations. After basic texts, the Library has sought to acquire critical editions and the most general and useful works of criticism. The next priorities are scholia and concordances. A modest collection of works on Greek and Roman History supports the holdings in literature. The collection consists of over 6000 volumes in the Library of Congress Classifications D, DE, DF, DG, and PA. The collection of late classical, Hellenistic, and medieval authors is strongest in philosophy and religion, with several large sets, including

English offers excellent preparation for any future requiring integrative thinking, skill in writing, discernment in reading, an appreciation of human experience and aesthetic values, and the processes of critical and creative expression. Business, government, technology, education, and publishing are areas where our graduates frequently make their careers. Our program offers emphases in literature and writing, as well as concentrations in children's literature and publishing. The English Department also supports the study abroad programs, and we offer study tours to such places as Europe, Australia, and the Caribbean. Faculty: Albrecht, Chair ; Barot, Bergman, Campbell, Carlton, Eyler, Jansen, Jones, Kaufman, Keeling, Marcus, D.M. Martin, Rahn, Robinson, Seal, Skipper, B. Temple-Thurston.
English Major (Emphasis on Literature)
The English major with an emphasis on literature introduces students to the great literary traditions of Britain, North America, and the English-speaking world. The major in literature places courses organized by historical period at the heart of the student's program, allowing students to read the great works that define the periods, and to explore the ways in which cultural contexts shape the literary imagination. Students who select the emphasis on literature can expect to learn how sensitive readers engage texts through their own speaking and writing, following their insights into the rich pleasures of literary language and growing more sophisticated in constructing effective interpretive arguments. They will also be introduced to the ways in which major critical traditions frame our approaches to literature and define the issues that keep literature meaningful and relevant in our lives.

General Overview
Origin and History Latin (Lingua Latina) is a lanfuage of the Indo-European family that appeared in Italy in the mid 2nd millenium BC. Formerly it was argued that together with the other Indo-European languages of ancient Italy (Faliscan, Osco-Umbrian and Venetic) Latin forms a separate Italic linguistic group, but now this view is not held anymore, though considerable mutual influences are not excluded. The later colloquial form of Latin ( the so called Proto-Romance or Vulgar Latin ) became ancestral to the modern Romance languages The long history of Latin may be divided into 9 periods:
  • Preliterary period (till 240 BC). In this period Latin was spoken by small groups of people living along the lower Tiber River. The Etruscan variant of the Western Greek alphabet was adopted in the 7th century BC. The language is known from some inscriptions.

Medieval Latin refers to the Latin used in the Middle Ages , after the fall of the Roman empire but before the rise of vernacular languages in the Renaissance . It is largely synonymous with Church Latin Medieval Latin was characterised by an enlarged vocabulary, which freely borrowed from other sources. Prominent among those sources were Greek , from which much of the technical vocabulary of Christianity came. The various Germanic languages spoken by the Germanic tribes who invaded western Europe were also major sources of new words. Germanic leaders became the rulers of western Europe, and as such words from their languages were freely imported into the vocabulary of law. Other more ordinary words were replaced by coinages from Vulgar Latin or Germanic sources because the classical words had fallen into disuse. Latin was also spread to areas such as Ireland and Germany , where Romance languages were not spoken and which had never known Roman rule. Works written in these lands where Latin was a learned language with no relation to the local vernacular also influenced medieval Latin's vocabulary and syntax.
