Hugh Clapperton From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hugh Clapperton May 18 April 13 Scottish traveller and explorer of West and Central Africa He was born in at Annan, Dumfriesshire , where his father was a surgeon. He gained some knowledge of practical mathematics and navigation, and at thirteen was apprenticed on board a vessel which traded between Liverpool and North America . After having made several voyages across the Atlantic Ocean , he was impressed for the navy, in which he soon rose to the rank of midshipman . During the Napoleonic Wars he saw a good deal of active service, and at the storming of Port Louis, Mauritius , in November , he was first in the breach and hauled down the French flag. In he went to Canada , was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, and to the command of a schooner on the Canadian lakes. In , when the flotilla on the lakes was dismantled, he returned home on half-pay. In Clapperton removed to Edinburgh , where he made the acquaintance of Walter Oudney , who aroused in him an interest in African travel. Lieutenant G. F. (Redirected from Richard Lander Richard Lemon Lander Richard Lemon Lander February 8 February 6 English explorer of the African continent Lander was the son of a Cornish innkeeper. Lander worked, as his assistant, for the Scottish explorer Hugh Clapperton , and went with him on a trip to West Africa in . Clapperton died in April near Sokoto . Lander was the only surviving European member of the expedition. He proceeded southeast and returned to England in July Lander returned to West Africa in , this time accompanied by his brother John Lander . They landed on Badagri in March 22 and followed the lower Niger River from Bussa Benue River and the Niger's coastal delta. They traveled in leaky canoes . The brothers returned to Britain in In Lander went to Africa again as leader of an expedition organized by Macgregor Laird and other Liverpool merchants to open up trade on the Niger, and to found a commercial settlement at the junction of the Benue with the main stream. Hugh Clapperton was born in Annan, the son of a surgeon. He received little formal education and at age 13 went to sea. He joined the Royal Navy and saw service in the Mediterranean, the East Indies, and Canada. Clapperton returned to Scotland on half pay in 1817 and 3 years later met Dr. Walter Oudney, who was preparing an expedition to west-central Africa. Clapperton accepted Oudney's invitation to accompany him, and in 1822, with Maj. Dixon Denham, they set out from Tripoli to cross the Sahara. On Feb. 4, 1823, they reached Lake Chad, being the first Europeans to see it. Thinking it the key to western African river systems, they explored the kingdoms around the lake and discovered the Shari River, which emptied into Lake Chad.

Hugh Clapperton During the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain had occupied, and finally annexed, the island of Malta in the Mediterranean. Malta carried on an important trade with Tripoli, on the north coast of Africa. Tripoli was the capital of one of the six Barbary States, of which the others were the Empire of Morocco, the Deylik of Oran, the Deylik of Algiers, the Beylik of Constantine and the Beylik of Tunis. All of these states, with the exception of Morocco, were nominally part of the Ottoman Empire, but the Basha of Tripoli was practically independent, and had become an ally of the British Government following Nelson's victories which had given Great Britain the maritime control of the Mediterranean. The consuls who represented Great Britain diplomatically and commercially in Tripoli began to send reports of the Sudan trade, and of the rich countries of Bornu, Hausa, Sokoto, the Niger River and the great Lake Chad. After the failure of James Kingston Tuckey's expedition to the Congo in 1816, the authorities felt that the best course to follow was to send an expedition across the Sahara Desert to reach the lower Niger, and accordingly a caravan under Dr Joseph Ritchie (ca 1788 - 1819) and a naval captain, George Francis Lyon (1795 - 1832) started from Tripoli in 1818 and reached the country of Fezzan. Here Ritchie died, and Lyon was forced to return. Lyon had wrongly come to the conclusion that the Niger must enter Lake Chad and then flow on to join the Nile. The direction of the British government's next expedition was influenced by Lyon's mistaken theory. This time the plan was to go to Bornu, the kingdom around Lake Chad, using the same caravan route which had been taken by the German, Frederick Hornemann, in 1798.

MUNGO PARK PARK, MUNGO (1771-1806?), Scottish explorer of the Niger, was born in Selkirkshire, Scotland, on the 20th of September 1771, at Foulshiels on the Yarrowthe farm which his father rented from the duke of Buccleuch. He was the seventh in a family of thirteen. Having received a good education, he was apprenticed to a surgeon named Thomas Anderson in Selkirk, and then attended the university of Edinburgh for three sessions (I 7891791), obtaining the surgical diploma. By his brother-in-law, James Dickson, a botanist of repute, he was introduced to Sir Joseph Banks, then president of the Royal Society, and through his good offices obtained the post of assistant-surgeon on board the Worcester East Indiaman. In this capacity he made the voyage in 1792 to Benkulen, in Sumatra, and on his return in 1793 he contributed a description of eight new Sumatran fishes to the Transactions of the Linnean Society. J. Thomsons Mungo Park and the Niger (London, 1890) contains the best critical estimate of the explorer and his work.
