After the overthrow of the Provisional Government on 7th November, 1917, the All-Russian Congress of Soviets met and handed over power to the Soviet Council of People's Commissars. Vladimir Lenin was elected chairman and other appointments included leading Bolsheviks such as Leon Trotsky (Foreign Affairs) Alexei Rykov (Internal Affairs), Anatoli Lunacharsky (Education) and Joseph Stalin (Nationalities). Alexander Kerensky , who had managed to escape arrest, assembled loyal troops from the Northern Front. Led by General Krasnov, the Cossacks were defeated by Bolshevik forces at Pulkova. By December, 1917, central Russia and Siberia was under the control of Lenin's government. General Lavr Kornilov now organized a Volunteer Army and in January 1918 his forces numbered 3,000 men. Over the next few months other groups who opposed the Bolshevik government joined the struggle. Eventually these soldiers became known as the Whites. Those that joined the White Army included the Cadets , who wished to continue the war against the Central Powers . Some Mensheviks and Socialist Revolutionaries that were opposed to the dictatorial powers of the new regime also joined the resistance. Others who joined included landowners who had lost their estates, factory owners who had their property nationalized, devout members of the

Allegory predicting the triumph of the Union over the Confederacy Freedom, holding the American flag, is flanked by Christianity and Justice, and surrounded by historical figures including Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin. Humanitas reaches down to the manacled slave being restrained by the alligator King Cotton, sovereign of the dark underworld of the Confederacy. Library of Congress explanation of allegory
  • the special place of America in world history a Northern victory as a prelude to the millennium, and the issue of slavery.
First, the churches emphasized that the Union had to be preserved because of the special place that America occupied in world history. With its republican institutions, democratic ideals, and Christian values, the United States supposedly stood in the vanguard of civilization's forward march. The success of the Confederate rebellion would imperil that progress. If the South succeeded in dismembering the Union, republican government would be deemed by people everywhere to be a failure. It would no longer appear to be the wave of the future, and the advance of liberty around the globe would be slowed or even halted. Next, Christian ministers often portrayed the war for the Union in millennial terms. Drawing on the imagery of the twentieth chapter of Revelation and on other portions of the Bible describing events near the close of history, they suggested that a Northern victory might prepare the way for the Kingdom of God on earth. (This did

The war divided Spain both geographically and ideologically. It brought to power General Francisco Franco , who ruled Spain from the end of the war until his death almost 40 years later. By the time the war was over, an estimated 500,000 people had been killed in combat or by execution, or had died as a result of hunger or wounds. An additional 250,000 to 500,000 supporters of the losing side left Spain to avoid persecution.

The Civil War in the West
  • Battle of Glorieta Pass, NM The Battle of Glorieta was a Union victory. The battle lasted for three days because the Confederates were able to control the pass. The Union army was victorious on the third day. Lieutenant-Colonel Chaves led Chivington’s group over rugged terrain behind the Confederates in the pass. Discovering the enemy’s supply train poorly guarded, the Colorado Volunteers burned the supplies and killed 1,100 mules.
  • The Battle of Picacho Pass On April 15, 1862, the western-most "battle" of the American Civil War was fought on the flanks of Picacho Peak, a rocky volcanic spire situated 50 miles northwest of a small Sonoran town named Tucson.
  • Brazos Santiago, Texas. May 12-13, 1865: This was the last battle in the Civil War. Native, African, and Hispanic Americans were all involved in the fighting. Many combatants reported that firing came from the Mexican shore and that some Imperial Mexican forces crossed the Rio Grande but did not take part in the battle.

Causes of the Civil War "Reminiscences Of The Civil War", (Chapter I)
By John B. Gordon, Maj. Gen. CSA There is no book in existence, I believe, in which the ordinary reader can find an analysis of the issues between the two sections, which fairly represents both the North and the South. Although it would require volumes to contain the great arguments, I shall attempt here to give a brief summary of the causes of our sectional controversy, and it will be my purpose to state the cases of the two sections so impartially that just-minded people on both sides will admit the statement to be judicially fair.
During the entire life of the Republic the respective rights and powers of the States and general government had furnished a question for endless controversy. In process of time this controversy assumed a somewhat sectional phase. The dominating thought of the North and of the South may be summarized in a few sentences.
The South maintained with the depth of religious conviction that the Union formed under the Constitution was a Union of consent and not of force; that the original States were not the creatures but the creators of the Union; that these States had gained their independence, their freedom, and their sovereignty from the mother country, and had not surrendered these on entering the Union; that by the express terms of the Constitution all rights and powers not delegated were reserved to the States; and the South challenged the North to find one trace of authority in that Constitution for invading and coercing a sovereign State.

SPIEGEL INTERVIEW WITH BRITISH AUTHOR IAN MCEWAN
'We're Witnessing a Civil War in Islam'
Ian McEwan, 57, talks about the atmosphere in London after the attacks, the fight against religious fanatics, the legacy of Tony Blair, and his new book, "Saturday," which imagines a day lived in the shadow of terrorism.

DPA Award-winning author Ian McEwan, has written nine novels as well as short story collections and screenplays. He currently lives in London and experienced the terrorist attacks first-hand. SPIEGEL Where were you when the bombs went off?
McEwan: I was here, I was working. I knew nothing. I'd been to the American Embassy to get my visa. I was crossing London when the bombs went off and I wasn't even aware of it. I mean, I was maybe two miles from Tavistock Square. My first sense of the fact that something was going wrong was just the sheer level of police sirens around me. We're used to a certain kind of background, but suddenly the helicopters and the sirens were just overwhelming.
SPIEGEL: Your new book, "Saturday," is written in expectation of an act of terrorism. Now it has happened. What was your first thought when you heard it was a terrorist attack?

Watch Talking Point Can there be an end to the turmoil in Iraq?
Nearly 25,000 civilians have been killed in the country since the US-led invasion in March 2003, a report says. Recent days have seen a devastating surge in shootings and suicide bombs, and civilians are often the target. The future of the country's new constitution is also in doubt. Four Sunni Muslims have temporarily left the committee drafting the constitution after three of their colleagues were shot dead. Is this a decisive point in Iraq's history? What lies behind the increased violence? What's your reaction to the estimated 25,000 civilian casualties? We discussed the situation in Iraq in our global phone-in programme, Talking Point, on Sunday 24th July. You can watch the programme again by clicking on the link above. This debate is now closed. Read a selection of your comments below. The following comments reflect the balance of opinion received so far: Most bombs are planted by Arabs and most bombs kill Arabs. In my book this makes the situation there a state of civil war already.

Here in Baghdad, it's beginning to feel like a critical moment.
A tanker bomb killed nearly 100 people in Musayyib In the last week this city has seen 22 car bombs, with 10 on a single day - last Friday. Not far from Baghdad, at Musayyib, between Hilla and Karbala, nearly 100 Shia Muslims were killed. The shadowy resistance movements seem to be operating on a new and much more ambitious level. Last summer, and in the summer of 2003, there were similar peaks, though much lower ones: The ferocious heat seems to produce new reserves of anger and violence here. As I flew in, sitting in the aircraft cockpit, Baghdad lay dark and irregular, like a blotch of ink, straight ahead of us. Below lay the ribbon of road from the south. In the months after the US-led invasion of Iraq we used to drive up that road to get to Baghdad. By the beginning of 2004 that was already becoming much too dangerous, and we had to fly.

October 1996 Civil War buffs love the mid-Atlantic area. Some of the most significant battles of the war were fought nearby, and the South's favorite general, Robert E. Lee, spent his boyhood years just across the river in Virginia. Whether you're in Washington for a week or a couple of months, you'll be able to find some Civil War sites of interest.
These are excursions that will take you a single day from downtown Washington. 1. Alexandria and Arlington Cemetery
You can reach Arlington Cemetery and Old Town Alexandria on the subway . Arlington Cemetery is on the Blue Line; Old Town is on the Blue and Yellow lines. Old Town and Arlington Cemetery are closely associated with the Lee family . In nearby Alexandria, for example, you can visit Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's boyhood home. Arlington Cemetery was founded when the Union Army seized one of the Lee family houses and began burying Civil War casualties in the back yard.
