Be sure that they also show how the state of Virginia split when the western region did not secede and West Virginia was formed. Tell students that they will be researching the lives of people involved in this war. What To Do: Have small groups of students each choose a person who played a role in the Civil War. Some well-known people include Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Robert Gould Shaw, General Ulysses S. Grant, General Robert E. Lee, Matthew Brady, and Clara Barton, but students should choose any person who interests them, including people who are not well-known. Each group should research the life and accomplishments of the person they chose. Encourage students to use encyclopedias and biographies from the school or local library, and video materials if available.

    Researching People
    of the Civil War Era
    Searching for a Louisiana Confederate
    soldier's service record?
If you know the full name of the individual, look up the last name in Andrew B. Booth's Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers . This information was compiled from military service records now maintained by the National Archives. Once you learn the regiment and company in which the soldier served, look up a brief regimental history in Arthur W. Bergeron, Jr.'s Guide to Louisiana Confederate Military Units 1861-1865 (LSU Press, 1989). Both of these books are available in public libraries in Louisiana. From here, follow the advice below re: obtaining service and/or pension records.

    Preparing for Your Research
Before we jump right into the research process, there are a few basic pointers that every new genealogist needs to know. The following guide was compiled for the novice, and only intended to give some direction for the general research of Civil War ancestors. Most researchers begin the long, arduous task of tracing their Civil War lineage with little more than a name and a family folk tale. If that sounds familiar, then you already learned the first lesson of genealogy:
