MEXICAN TEXANS IN THE CIVIL WAR . Secession and the Civil War qqv deeply divided the Mexican Americans qv qv who joined the Confederacy but deserted and enlisted in the Union Army, only to desert again and join the liberals in Mexico, where he was captured by the French and executed. At least 2,500 Mexican Texans joined the Confederate Army. The most famous was Santos Benavides, qv who rose to command the Thirty-third Texas Cavalry as a colonel, and thus became the highest ranking Tejano to serve the Confederacy. Though it was ill equipped, frequently without food, and forced to march across vast expanses of South Texas and northern Mexico, the Thirty-third was never defeated in battle. Colonel Benavides, along with his two brothers, Refugio qv qv at Carrizo (Zapata) in May 1861 and on three separate occasions invaded northern Mexico in retaliation for Unionist-inspired guerilla raids into Texas. The Benavides brothers were also successful in driving off a small Union force that attacked Laredo in March 1864. Many Tejanos who enlisted in the Confederate Army saw combat far from home. A few who joined Hood's Texas Brigade

Tom Ledoux A few days ago I decided to find out how much information there is about the Civil War on the Internet. I started out with the word “war,” which returned over 96 million pages; “peace,” on the other hand, only returned 28.5 million pages. What does that tell you about the world? If you just search for the words “civil war,” you will find more than eight million pages! “Virginia ‘Civil War’” returns 2,300,000 pages, “American Civil War” nets you 702,000 pages, the “Battle of Gettysburg,” 58,000 pages, the “War Between The States,” 48,000 pages; And, the “War of the Rebellion,” 34,500 pages and a search for the “War of Northern Aggression” delivers links to almost 6,000 pages. If you just search on the dates “1861-1865” you get 190,000 pages. There are 510,000 pages on the Civil War Navy alone!
So what is my point? There is a lot of information out there — a lot of great information, a lot of good information, and, unfortunately, some really bad information.

    Civil War Ironclads
The American Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865, came at a time of transition from ships of wood and men of iron to ships of iron and men of less sturdy composition. The war occaisioned a unique outburst of experimentation in ship design, with a great variety of new types of ships entering service. While the USS Monitor foreshadowed subsequent developments, most of the vessel archetypes of this epoch did not survive the Civil War. In 1972 Stephen Jay Gould and Niles Eldredge proposed a theory of punctuated equilibrium, wherein evolutionary change occurs relatively rapidly in comparatively brief periods of environmental stress, separated by longer periods of evolutionary stability. In the 1989 book

The unit offers enlistment to people of all ages, gender, and races (yes, the U.S. Navy was integrated during and before the Civil War). Interested parties may apply to serve as Sailors, Marines or Civilians, the sole stipulation as regards age being that children under sixteen must be accompanied in their enlistment by a responsible parent or guardian. Throughout the War Between the States, the Federal Navy routinely landed parties of Sailors and Marines ashore on raids, reconnaissance or to aid the regular land forces. These were ad hoc groups comprised of men from the ships of the local squadron. Shore parties varied in size from a single lieutenant who might offer his services as staff officer for the day to an Army general or up to several thousand men as landed to attack Fort Fisher at Wilmington, North Carolina. The USNLP represents a group such as might have been landed from a flotilla of gunboats supporting the Army along one of the many rivers that laced the Confederacy. If you are interested in finding out more about the USNLP, information on membership, subscriptions to the unit newsletter "Beat to Quarters!", information is available on a

Sailors and Marines on the Deck of the U.S. Gunboat Mendota - 1864 (detail) The U.S. Navy's principal role during the American Civil War was to blockade the South's coastline and to use inland rivers to support Union Army operations. Over the course of the war, these joint operations with the Army cut the South off from outside support, gradually constricting its trade and commercial livelihood. Rapid improvements in engineering and weaponry led to the beginning of a revolution in naval technology, notably in the use of iron to fabricate the hulls of warships. The Union's ironclad Monitor was built to counter the Confederate Virginia , an armored ship built on the hull of the former USS Merrimac . Although the 1862 battle between the Monitor and Virginia ended in a draw, this first battle of ironclads signaled a profound change in the nature of naval warfare. The war also saw innovations in mines, mine countermeasures, and submarines. The Union Navy blockaded some three thousand miles of Confederate coast from Virginia to Texas in a mammoth effort to cut off supplies, destroy the Southern economy, and discourage foreign intervention.

    African American Civil War Sailors
More than a century after the end of the Civil War, comparatively little is known about the experience of ordinary sailors in the navies of the belligerents. Whereas few records of the Confederate States' Navy survive, those of the United States Navy exist in abundance. Ironically, this embarrassment of riches makes exploring the social history of African American enlisted personnel difficult. For unlike the army, the navy did not segregate African Americans into separate units administered by a Bureau of Colored Sailors. Accordingly, research concerning black sailors has lagged behind the rich outpouring on black soldiers. Even such basic information of how many African American sailors served during the Civil War remains unresolved. For years the Navy Department assumed that some 30,000 African Americans served during the Civil War, or roughly 25 percent of the approximately 118,000 Civil War enlistments. A close study of the Navy's official enlistment records undertaken during the early 1970s revised the estimate downward to just under 10,000 men, or approximately 9 percent of the total enlisted force. The researchers at Howard University, a team of graduate students led by Professor Joseph P. Reidy of the Department of History, in partnership with the National Park Service and the Department of the Navy, are attempting to close the gap between these widely divergent estimates and to examine the African American naval experience in all its dimensions.

Each database can be searched with a single query. This provides, for instance, the very powerful capability to search the entire Army, Navy, map, and Medical/Surgical Official Records at one time. There is simply no faster and easier way to search the records. Requires 256 MB RAM, Windows 98 or above, and a DVD-ROM drive capable of reading modern DVD-R media.
